Ambient intelligence (AmI) refers to environments equipped with technology that can sense and respond to human presence, aimed at improving daily activities and interactions in an unobtrusive manner. This vision emphasizes aspects like embeddedness, context awareness, personalization, adaptability, and anticipatory responses from devices. The paper discusses AmI as part of the experience economy, highlighting its relation to user-centered design and the growing importance of user experience amidst information overload in the 1990s. Key principles and applications, particularly within home environments, are explored along with references to influential projects and research in the field.
