Abstract
Women are observed to advance in different fields, such as sports, culture, and education, but still are facing problems in gaining economic independence. This is due to the lack of institutions and associations that are able to provide awareness of schemes and programs that support women from marginalized sections of society. However, they take the help of the financial system through SHGs that help tribal women to use it for income-generating purposes and to become economically independent. The sample size for the study was 30. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used while collecting the data. I have also used exploratory and descriptive research. This study examines the critical role of the SHGs among the Bodo women in generating economic empowerment and further contributing to the social development of the society.

Since 1970s, the idea and practice of self help has developed worldwide as a major social phenomenon for poverty alleviation and women empowerment. It has been widely acknowledged in development literature that SHGs is one of the means to empower women by providing easy access to credits. This paper tries to look at how SHGs contribute to the process of socio-economic empowerment of women. Abstract: Micro-finance interventions are well recognized world over as an effective tool for poverty alleviation and improving socio-economic conditions of rural poor. In India too, micro-finance is making headway in its effort for reducing poverty and empowering rural poor and particularly women. Micro-finance through the network of co-operatives, commercial banks, regional rural banks, NABARD and NGOs has been largely supply driven and recent approach. The recent studies also highlight that self help group based micro finance in India has long lasting social impacts on poor and particularly women rather than economic impacts as assumed earlier. The analysis of micro-credit programmes on women empowerment simply demonstrate that government’s policies for empowering women articulate focus on forward and backward linkages to make them economically independent and self-reliant. Present paper attempts to assess the role of SHGs in women empowerment in Warangal District of Andhra Pradesh.
