Proverbios 8,22-31 en Hilario de Poitiers

2024, Proverbs 8.22-31: Text, Context, Reception

Abstract

Hilary of Poitiers quotes Proverbs 8:22-31 on at least 56 occasions. In three of them we find a somewhat more developed exegetical explanation: In Matth. 11,9; Trin. 12,36-37 and Syn. 16-17. By attributing this biblical quotation to the Son, Hilary's exegesis relates the eternal generation of the Word to the creation of the world. Hilary of Poitiers seems to point to three "phases" in the generation of the Son: creatio, fundatio, and divina nativitas, which correspond to verses 22, 23 and 24-25 respectively. All of Hilary's efforts seem to focus on combining a generation of the Word with a view to creation, proper to the Pre-Nicene tradition and clearly described in Proverbs 8:22, with the eternal generation defined at Nicaea.
