Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between organized state violence and individual sensibilities. It moves from macro-social level discussions about the state and its formation through organised violence to microsocial level analyses of individual motivation and emotion. Drawing on the work of Norbert Elias we outline a framework for integrating political and economic analyses of state violence with the more subjective approach which focuses on the sensibilities involved in the perpetration of such violence. State violence needs to be understood both as an expression of state power and as comprising individual acts of aggression with complex social and psychological relations to other forms of interpersonal violence. We also conclude that civil society is the most effective mechanism for countering state violence.

La amplia respuesta ciudadana contra ese acto criminal obligó a ese periódico a crear una versión de los hechos en la que se intentaba tanto reducir su impacto emocional como mantener la imagen positiva del grupo agresor. Los métodos a los que recurrió fueron: la atribución de responsabilidades al enemigo, la despersonalización de la víctima y la valoración asimétrica del sufrimiento.

Análise do tema violência nas políticas de cuidado de longa duração ao idoso

Resumo Objetivou-se identificar e analisar na literatura nacional e internacional se e como o tema da violência é abordado nos estudos de políticas públicas de atenção ao idoso albergado em Instituição de Longa Permanência para Idosos. Realizou-se revisão integrativa da literatura publicada entre 2010 e agosto de 2016. Foram consultadas as principais bases bibliográficas utilizando-se os descritores: “idoso”, “políticas públicas”,“instituição de longa permanência para idosos”,“asilo”, “casa de repouso” e “ILPI”, nos idiomas português, inglês e espanhol. Analisou-se 77 artigos, sendo 12 brasileiros e 65 estrangeiros, dos quais 30 são dos Estados Unidos. A análise mostrou que muitos países possuem políticas de cuidados de longa duração que regem as modalidades dos serviços que os fornecem. Somente oito artigos abordaram a questão da violência no interior das ILPI no âmbito das políticas de proteção ao idoso e afirmam que países da América Latina e da Ásia precisam avançar nesta pauta ...

Saúde indígena no Brasil : Reflexões sobre formas de violência

Este artigo trata das políticas de saúde pública para os povos indígenas do Brasil, enfocando as relações de violência observadas pelos autores durante sua pesquisa. Chamamos a atenção para os diferentes tipos de violência através de uma análise que articula o trabalho de campo sobre atenção primária à saúde em áreas indígenas com observações de negociações políticas sobre questões de saúde envolvendo líderes indígenas e funcionários públicos. Há, por um lado, a violência simbólica que pode ser observada nas interações cotidianas entre as/os trabalhadoras/es da saúde e as/os pacientes indígenas e, por outro, as contradições de uma retórica política oficial que afirma a autoridade indígena e, em seguida, a descarta sistematicamente quando as decisões que envolvem saúde pública são colocadas em prática. In light of the armed conflict and political violence in Colombia, the contribution of nursing professionals is fundamental in caring for individuals, families, and communities, whose experience because of these types of events has been devastating, not only for their physical health, but for their psychic and emotional stability. Due to this, we give way to some brief considerations on the armed conflict and political violence in Colombia. Thereafter, the notion of social suffering is included as a perspective that broadens the horizon of care within this context, then we review the elements that characterize the perspectives and domains of nursing and the possibilities offered by the new epistemological tendencies to reflect on life, as a central focus of care, from the proposals by Afaif Meleis; and, finally we discuss the role of nursing professionals in the restitution of the dignity of those who have experienced the consequences of the armed conflict.

Entre espelhos: a formação em saúde e sua produção de violência

The goal of this research is to understand the occurrence of violence during healthcare training, its origins, vulnerable groups and mechanisms by which such violence can occur. The study was divided into a survey of the literature on the occurrence of violence in healthcare training and a qualitative research, in which a course of the health area was analyzed-dentistry. Interviews and focus group were conducted with students and teachers and were analyzed through the technique of content analysis. The results reveal several types of violence, characterized as community interpersonal violence, cultural violence and institutional violence. Such violences, it is concluded, are a part of healthcare training and constitutive of the identity construction of these future health professionals. They are trivialized or naturalized, and therefore remain unconscious and of non-immediate visibility. The method used was sensitive to capture such phenomena and the discoveries can collaborate as a subsidy so that institutional pedagogical, political and curricular arrangements are able to act on this matter.

Violencia familiar e comunitaria em escolares do municipio de Sao Goncalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

O presente estudo descritivo teve como objetivo investigar a associação entre as situações de violência na família, na escola e na comunidade vividas e presenciadas por crianças e adolescentes do município de São Gonçalo (RJ). Foram aplicados questionários às mães/responsáveis para aferir a violência na família e na escola, e às crianças para verificar sua percepção sobre a violência comunitária. Empregaram-se a análise de correspondência múltipla e a análise de aglomerados, duas técnicas exploratórias descritivas. Foram analisados dados de 280 escolares. Verificou-se que 43,9% das mães informaram que seus filhos sofrem violência física severa em suas casas. Quanto à percepção das crianças/adolescentes sobre a violência comunitária, 93,2% afirmaram já ter vivido ou presenciado esses eventos em suas comunidades. Reacciones a la violencia institucional: estrategias de los pacientes frente al contraderecho a la salud en Brasil

In this article we identify evidences of inequalities, prejudices and discrimination in the access and utilization of public health services belonging to the Brazilian Unified Health Care System, considering them to be institutional violence and a negation of rights, in order to look at the reactions of the subjects victimized by this process. This research study utilized different methodologies, articulating participant observation, semi-structured interviews, focus groups and dramatization. The results highlight the trajectory in seeking health care as the main expression of inequalities, strengthened by structural factors such as the precarious condition of health care services, which potentiate power asymmetries, and the presence of discrimination derived from stigmas and prejudices. Most patients' reactions to the situation of institutional violence seek an individual solution to the problem, often reaffirming the conditions that generate rights violations. Few patients' reactions question the systemic conditions that determine the continued discrimination.

Confianza entre Actores Afectados por la Violencia y sus Implicaciones para la Construcción de Paz

Este documento de trabajo explora el papel fundamental de la confianza en contextos afectados por la violencia y las relaciones con actores anteriormente armados dentro del contexto más amplio de la consolidación de la paz en América Latina. Los complejos cambios sociales necesarios para lograr condiciones sostenibles de seguridad humana en estos contextos requieren la (re)construcción de la confianza entre los actores afectados por el conflicto (Govier y Verwoerd, 2002). Aunque el gasto de ayuda global para la consolidación de la paz ha aumentado un 76% en los diez años entre 2009 y 2019, los esfuerzos realizados en entornos de violencia continua han mostrado pocos cambios sistemáticos (Kharas, McArthur y Ohno, 2019). Este trabajo aborda el núcleo de este desafío: las políticas e intervenciones de consolidación de la paz frecuentemente apuntan a procesos sociales complejos que dependen de la confianza, sin abordarla directamente. Esto es comparable a comenzar a leer un libro por la mitad, ya que la confianza constituye el sine qua non de la reconciliación y de todas las formas de vida económica y política (Luhmann, 1979). Hasta la fecha, la Red de Violencia, Seguridad y Paz (VSP) ha utilizado un enfoque multisectorial e intersectorial que considera la complejidad de la confianza en su intersección con la seguridad, la violencia y la reintegración de actores anteriormente armados. Esto sugiere que la confianza opera tanto a nivel interpersonal como institucional, influyendo significativamente en la trayectoria de los procesos de consolidación de la paz y democratización. En el marco de un proyecto más amplio, la Red VSP y el proyecto Trust After Betrayal, basado en la Escuela de Economía y Ciencias Políticas de Londres (LSE), organizaron una cumbre multinacional presencial en Bogotá en mayo de 2023, precedida y guiada por una serie de seminarios de cuatro partes sobre estos temas y una conferencia virtual el año anterior. Este artículo se basa en los diálogos estructurados que se produjeron a lo largo de esos eventos, incluyendo transcripciones de plenarias, sesiones de trabajo, ponencias y debates estructurados. El documento sintetiza y amplía los temas emergentes y las líneas de acción necesarias para un enfoque más holístico y matizado para comprender y operacionalizar la confianza en contextos afectados por la violencia. Se nutre de una variedad de disciplinas, incluyendo la filosofía moral, la antropología y las políticas públicas, para abogar por un enfoque revitalizado en la confianza como elemento fundamental y resultado crítico de iniciativas exitosas de construcción de paz.

Resumen: El énfasis en la violencia simbólica o estructural y en los efectos del neoliberalismo está oscureciendo un tema de investigación urgente: la violencia física exterminista. Podríamos considerar añadir la violencia exterminista a otras violencias contemporáneas, como aquellas derivadas del giro neoliberal, para entender de manera más completa la modernidad y nuestro tiempo. A pesar del número de muertos en los últimos doscientos años y la extensión de la lógica violenta exterminista en nuestro tiempo, la violencia física parece haber desaparecido demasiado fácilmente de los esfuerzos por comprender el presente desde las ciencias sociales. Reconceptualizando el concepto de «exterminismo» de Frase y Thompson y considerando críticamente las investigaciones clásicas y contemporáneas sobre los genocidios y la violencia es posible generar una nueva agenda de investigación: una sociología del exterminismo. Abstract Emphasis on simbolic or structural violence and on the nowadays effects of neoliberalism are neglecting an urgent topic of research: exterminist physical violence. We may consider adding exterminist violence to other contemporary violences, as those derived from the neoliberal turn, to fully understand modernity and our own contemporary times. Despite the number of mortal victims in the last two hundred years and the extension of the exterminist violent logic within our times, physical violence seems to have disappeared too easily from the social sciences recent accounts of the present. Reframing Frase's and Thompson's concept of «exterminism» while considering contemporary research on genocides and violence may give birth to a new research agenda: a sociology of exterminism. Violence is on the agenda of the studies on aging, and it manifests itself in a structural, interpersonal and institutional manner, signaling the crossroad human beings have reached. The naturalization of violence as a form of care is an example. To prevent falls from elderly people residing in nursing homes, the health care professionals make use of restraint, a practice of care detrimental to both the physical and mental health of the elderly, and in addition puts them in degrading or inhumane situations.

Violência urbana: um desafio para o pediatra

Objectives: To present the main aspects of an approach to urban violence among children and adolescents and to point out the social and educational role of pediatricians. Sources of data: A literature review based on MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO was carried out for the years 1993 to 2005, using the following keywords: urban violence, children and adolescents. In addition to the review, policies and institutional reports on violence were also analyzed. Summary of the findings: The causal relationship of violence is presented in a range of different ways, from personal points of view to broader structural aspects. The literature suggests that urban violence results from varied actions, and also from specific risk behaviors. It is a worrying and complex phenomenon that results in high levels of morbidity and mortality, affecting children and adolescents. Special attention was given to homicide and to the psychological results of violent acts. Firearms are the most lethal instruments among adolescents and young males when compared to all other causes of death. Conclusions: Urban violence is one of the main social problems in Brazil. Violence prevention requires intersectoral and multiprofessional actions with the participation of the government and of the organized civil society. Children, and above all adolescents, are the groups that are most widely exposed to the consequences of urban violence. Pediatricians can have an important role in the process of prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Through their wide-ranging abilities, pediatricians are well-positioned to help victims and their families to establish a healthy and dynamic relationship with their environment and with themselves.
