According to the Oxford English Dictionary, migration denotes the movement of a person, group, or people from one locality or country to another, often for the purpose of settlement.[3] Such a relocation can be permanent, temporary, or seasonal. More specific terms are used in migration research, such as exile, diaspora, and transmigration.[4] Exile and diaspora refer to the experience of persecution and forced emigration from a home country. Exile, unlike diaspora (e.g., Jewish or African), tends to be considered an individual and temporary experience. However, the distinction between these terms can be provi...

At that time Alfred Barr, the director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, played a crucial role in canonizing this art. In order to gain insight into this volte-face, it will be necessary to consider the reception of German expressionism that preceded it as well. In general, this art met with disapproval for a long time. Although it could be seen in the USA since the beginning of the 1920s, it had only very few supporters and collectors.

Art historians have taken various positions on the subject. This article intends to explain the main positions that dominate literature on the canon and canon formation, the theoretical and methodological starting points that provide the framework for such research, as well as to propose that social art history offers a more comprehensive approach that might overcome the strict separation between these positions.

Besides a general framing of art-historical concepts and approaches regarding the canon and canon formation, the contributions in this feature section explore the reception and canonisation of specific works of art, artists, artists’ groups and movements. Common concerns across these contributions are the interrelations between the aesthetic and the extra-aesthetic within canon formation and the function of ideology and politics (and depoliticisation) within this process. The case studies that are discussed range from the mural Swing Landscape (1938) by Stuart Davis, the Russian avant-garde artist Natalia Goncharova and surrealism to the Dutch Cobra group and post-war German art, up to the recent reception of Latin American and Eastern European art.
