Charles Forceville

Having studied English language and literature, at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUA), I moved in 1999 to Media Studies at Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), where I study visual & multimodal communication, specifically metaphor, from a cognitivist perspective. Media and genres I have published on are advertising, animation film, documentary, comics, cartoons, children's picture books and, at first, on literature. Approaches I find useful include (conceptual) metaphor theory, narratology, stylistics, rhetoric, blending theory and some good old semiotics -- but in the last resort all my work is explicitly or implicitly rooted in relevance theory. While I am a great believer in "fundamental research," I increasingly want to complement this with research that, hopefully, contributes a tiny little bit to a better world.
