I teach gender studies, interdisciplinary studies, sociology, literature, and writing courses at the University of Texas at Arlington.

I have varied research interests that pivot around digital culture, sexual subcultures, and LGBTQ children's literature and culture.

This fall (2019) I have a couple of digital culture publications coming out. One is a collection of essays I co-edited and contributed to called The Dialectic of Digital Culture. The other is a journal article about digital pornography that will be published in Fast Capitalism.

I am also currently working on a book project about LGBTQ children's picture books under contract with University Press of Mississippi. I've published on the topic in the Journal of Homosexuality and the edited collection Heroes, Heroines, and Everything in Between.

Additionally, I write a review article of queer theory for Oxford Press' The Year in Critical and Cultural Theory and am contributing a chapter about queer theory and research profiles about sexology and LGBTQ children's picture books to a forthcoming open access LGBTQ Studies Textbook.

I have a PhD in Cultural Studies from George Mason University and a MA in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon University.

This year’s review of queer theory focuses on recent scholarship about transgender youth. Most of... more This year’s review of queer theory focuses on recent scholarship about transgender youth. Most of the scholarship reviewed in this chapter defines transgender expansively to include any identifications and/or expressions of gender that trouble dyadic sex-gender ideologies. Additionally, the scholarship reviewed in this chapter evinces a collapse of scholarship and activism by investing in scholarship as activism. Although queer theory is not often heralded for its use in taking a pragmatic approach to social change, the majority of theorists discussed in the chapter do in fact make practical recommendations for justice-oriented social policy and practice changes that would radically improve the lives of transgender youth. Even more, most of the scholars discussed in this chapter are themselves transgender and are committed to creating a world were trans lives can flourish. This article identifies and analyzes an emerging archive of children’s picture books that represe... more This article identifies and analyzes an emerging archive of children’s picture books that represent transgender and gender creative child characters. The subgenre of children’s literature is referred to as new queer children’s literature. The author explores the ways these texts represent queer youth as they negotiate various social institutions, especially the family and the school. It is suggested that an ambivalent reading of these images—one neither committed to anti-normativity nor assimilation—can help us understand the queer present at its most affirmative and, by extension, aid us in beginning to theorize possible queer futures.

This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of Women's and Gender Studies. Iss... more This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of Women's and Gender Studies. Issues of privilege, oppression, and power cannot be sufficiently understood and analyzed by focusing on one social identity, for instance gender, so this course takes an intersectional approach to understanding the socio--cultural production of inequalities. We will study how race, class, sexuality and nationality, among many social identities, intersect with gender to position people in relation to power and privilege. In order to cultivate a deeper understanding of the ways power is reproduced symbolically and institutionally we will study various social spheres including work, family, and culture. In addition, we will explore the development of US feminisms to establish how women have responded to stereotypes, discrimination, and oppression. Students will learn key words and concepts used by feminist scholars to study gender as well as important controversies in the field.

Mailbox: Johnson Center 240K Office Hours and Location: Wednesday 1:30 --2:30 and by appointment ... more Mailbox: Johnson Center 240K Office Hours and Location: Wednesday 1:30 --2:30 and by appointment in JC 239G Course Description This course introduces students to recent scholarship produced in Queer Studies and Political Theory that seeks to understand and critique relationships between the State, citizenship and sexuality. We will consider the role State--based institutions, like the military and marriage, play in defining and policing sexuality and sexual identity, as well as, how these institutions function to confer or deny access to citizenship rights and recognition. We will use newspaper articles, documentaries, films, websites, legal documents and other media to understand how meanings about the relationship between sexuality and citizenship are being produced, as well as, how the proper relationship between the State and the regulation of family, sexuality and other forms of intimacy are being represented and enacted. Students will use the theoretical frameworks and critical vocabulary highlighted in the course to create a case study about an issue of particular interest to them. Issues highlighted may include, but are not limited to, same--sex marriage, sexuality and immigration policy, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," school bullying or ENDA. This project will begin by creating a research plan that will help students describe how the issue highlighted is represented in various contexts (policy, film, websites, scholarship, personal narratives, newspaper articles, speeches, etc.). In this course we will be focusing specifically on the acculturation of gender identities and how gender differences are understood, produced, reproduced and sometimes challenged in psychoanalytic theories as well as cultural products.
