Patristics is what I research and teach.
I am a native of Estonia and I have studied theology in Switzerland and the United States, obtaining a Ph.D. from the CUA (Washington DC) in Historical Theology. From 2008 to 2015, I was an Associate Professor of Patristic Theology at the Catholic University of America; and from 2015-2022, a Faculty Member of Georgetown University.
My primary research areas are patristic philosophy of language and hermeneutics, particularly those of Augustine. I have also developed a keen interest in ancient creeds, patristic Trinitarian theology, and Constantine.
I am a member of the North American Patristics Society as well as of the International Association of Patristic Studies/ L’Association Internationale d’Études Patristiques; a member of the Editorial Board of Usuteaduslik ajakiri (Theological Journal) (Tartu University, Estonia); and a Regular Contributor to Reviews in Religion and Theology. In 2005-11, I was a member of the Steering Committee for the Group “Augustine and Augustinianisms” at the American Academy of Religion. Currently I am a section editor of the multi-volume Brill Encyclopedia of Early Christianity.

Augustine tells his story in the form of conversions to the quest of wisdom (Cicero), Manicheism, skepticism, neoplatonic philosophy, and catholic Christianity. The account of his conversions is an interesting mix of philosophical, biblical, and personal themes. The soul’s turning away from the Good and finding its way back to the Source through trials is fused with the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) and with Augustine’s own wandering away from his mother’s faith and return to God the Father.
