This study is a descriptive and exploratory reflexivity paper that intended to explore the idea of service learning (SL) in the context of service learning and language courses. It also intended to link the application of service learning as a progressive means of language learning. With these intentions, the researchers, conducted a service learning program in an alternative learning system(ALS) classes in the Philippines where they explored the ideas of service learning vis-à-vis language learning. It was found out how service learning is not only a good way to hone sociability and genuine concern for others but also a means to authentically learn academic matters including language and communication. It was concluded that in the process of doing service learning, there must be breeding of service providers and that it should be introduced in the educational curriculum.

It is well known that some serotoninergic drugs and neuroendocrine tumors producing serotonin (5-HT) may induce valvular heart disease by stimulation of proliferation of valvular cells via interaction with a 5-HT receptor type 2B. Serotonin could play a role in the pathogenesis of progressive valvular disease for example as a complication of rheumatic fever, in patients with congenital bicuspid aortic valves or in degenerative aortic valve stenosis. The initial inflammation in acute rheumatic fever seems to affect both right and the left-side cardiac valves. Some patients develop chronic right-sided valve disease, particularly in connection with septum defects, though left-sided valves typically are predominantly affected, indicating that high flow velocity and systemic pressure close to the valves may be central in the pathogenesis. Serotonin is transported in granules in blood platelets. Changes in platelet number and concentrations of substances released from platelets in patients with valvular disease indicate that serotonin is released locally by shear stress when passing through an abnormal valve. Accordingly, any functional changes (like bicuspid aortic valves and changes secondary to degeneration) in the valves may progress due to locally released serotonin. Unfortunately, due to serotonin release by sampling and preparation of plasma, local serotonin assessment is not possible. Nevertheless, we suggest that serotonin may play a role in valvular disease in general and that patients may benefit from treatment reducing the effect of serotonin on the heart.

This study analyzed 530 terms in computer studies based on their lexical classifications namely lexical type, lexical category, and lexical formation. These were from printed books, journals, documents, and academic discourses of students and professors in the field. The terms were analyzed to find the relationship between the lexical classification and translation techniques used. The analysis revealed that the terms are either simple or complex (lexical type), and they can be categorized as nouns, adjectives and verbs (lexical category). The noun sub-categories were common words, brands or trademarks, and keywords. The terms were lexically formed by derivation, blending, compounding, clipping, and simple root word. From this, structural characteristics of the terms were revealed. In the translation techniques used, simple terms were found to be translated by purification, systematic borrowing, lexical convergence, and semantic translation. Complex terms were translated by borrowing, owning, or adoption. The analysis further revealed that the lexical classifications and other structural characteristics had no relationship with the translation techniques used. Thus, there was no translation decision patterns found. This proves the inconsistencies observed in translating the terms, and it signifies the absence of clear standards on how English terms in computer studies are translated in Filipino.

This study aimed to construct and to validate the behavioral components of students' motivational goals as contextualized in Mathematics. The factors of motivational goals were based on Dowson and McInerney's framework composed of mastery, performance, work avoidance, social affiliation, social approval, social responsibility, social status, and social concern. The reliability of the scale was analyzed using Cronbach's Alpha. The Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficients of the eight motivational factors are 0.82, 0.73, 0.75, 0.83, 0.84, 0.88, 0.79, and 0.89 respectively. To assess the validity of the scale, its items were subjected to exploratory factor analysis. EFA result shows that the eight factors of behavioral motivation was reduced to six factors.

This study was conducted to assess the needs of computer studies students in terms of speaking the English language for occupational purposes. The insights of selected English language and computer science professors, practitioners in the field of computer, and students were sought and analyzed. Interviews, surveys, observations, and literature reviews were done. The students observed were from a state university in Quezon City, Philippines. They were selected through stratified random sampling, while the respondents-instructors and practitioners were chosen via purposive and convenience sampling respectively. This gave a total of 200 participants. The researcher applied objective and qualitative interpretations of data to identify the speaking needs of the student respondents. Using the Munby Model, a profile of communicative needs was prepared. The results imply that these must be considered in the preparation and development of syllabus for the course.
