Non-exhaustive examples are taken from the translation of A. Cassese's International Law into Greek, an effort aimed to illustrate the process of translation in the domain of international law, as being primarily a venture of discoursal decoding.

ABSTRACT This paper presents corpus work aimed at manually annotating sentiment expressions in th... more ABSTRACT This paper presents corpus work aimed at manually annotating sentiment expressions in the Greek (EL) sub–corpus of a corpus of movies coupled with both orthographic (EN) transcriptions and subtitles in (EL) and (ES). Our effort involves the treatment of emotion predicates and emotion–related concepts in naturally occurring texts and their integration into an existing lexical resource that is being re–designed and re–focused so as to ultimately form an Ontology of Emotions. This ontology will be appropriate for both lexicographic and computational approaches to sentiment. Emotion polarity and intensity was also studied based on corpus data.

This paper reports on a large-scale study on how “enemies” are linguistically constructed by Gree... more This paper reports on a large-scale study on how “enemies” are linguistically constructed by Greece’s radical right. The research combines corpus linguistics approaches and insights from critical discourse analysis, with the aim of analysing the referential/nomination and predication strategies used to delineate “others” as outgroups. Drawing on a 90 million-word corpus comprising the full set of texts from 13 radical right web-based platforms from 2001 to 2019, the research identifies and statistically classifies principal designators and qualifiers. By closely examining their diachronic variations and correlation with significant sociopolitical events, we critically categorise and discuss the empirical findings and thus unveil topics, as well as aspects of the argumentation, pooled by Greece’s radical right in their discursive constructions.

The systemic contrastive analysis of translation shifts in selected textual instances allows the ... more The systemic contrastive analysis of translation shifts in selected textual instances allows the examination of translational behaviour on the level of sociolects and of certain features of the translation act, in terms of both process and function, and on the level of the translation product as such. Such a systemic view of translation is envisaged in the so-called probabilistic laws of interference and growing standardisation, proposed by Gideon Toury. This paper focuses on interference, by analysing synchronically the lexicosemantic and stylistic performance of trainee translators in technical and scientific discourse. Some methodological and didactic conclusions are also drawn [1].

It is a challenge for Translation Studies to focus on the ethical aspects of translation practice... more It is a challenge for Translation Studies to focus on the ethical aspects of translation practice, with the aim to elaborate on nuances of translation didactics, showing a particular interest in the evaluation models as critical means of translation intervention, both on the basis of translational competence formation and translation product assessment. Pym (ibid.) posits that intervention actually refers to things that are not textually available, i.e. intentions, and that in this sense, interventionism is not a sound basis for quantitative descriptive textual research. We regard translators as people who have to think critically in the communicative act in which they actively intervene as communicators. We argue that it is the means and the methods towards selecting the appropriate elements that can be actually moderated and taught, at least for translating certain text genres. This paper traces register shifts (Halliday & Hasan 1976: 22; Hatim & Mason 1997) between source-... more This paper traces register shifts (Halliday & Hasan 1976: 22; Hatim & Mason 1997) between source-texts (English) and target-texts (Greek and Spanish) in instances of racist discourse in films. It presents preliminary, as yet non-exhaustive, findings and aims to ultimately formulate explanatory hypotheses concerning the emerging norms. Our methodological approach is placed in the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies (Toury 2012; Chesterman 2008) and in the school of Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough 1985; 1992), relying on Appraisal Theory (Martin & White 2005) to provide and analyse a taxonomy of the racism-related utterances examined.

The model elaborates further into the notion of degrees of acceptability of the ST/TT for particular purposes, relying on extensive analysis of the system ic norms governing the particulars of the text, i.e. the SFL-derived approach of register and the pertinent translation options, in terms of the field, tenor and mode subcategories. This holds increasingly true also for translation corpora, with a particular focus on the examina... more This holds increasingly true also for translation corpora, with a particular focus on the examination of translation strategies and norms [2] [4]. This paper presents an ongoing PhD research to examine, from a descriptive viewpoint, and hence annotate, the translational norms of the socio-culturally marked discourse of racism, and the shifts remarked during the discourse transfer from a source language (EN) to two target-languages (EL&ES). Our aim is to present problems and impediments that arise during the annotation process applied in this study. Our work so far reveals issues related both to the annotation methodology and schemata and the implementation of the annotation process in the software utilised.
