(p. 7) "The trend is obvious: Mass media is sinking into oblivion, while products based on narrowcasting (for example, VCR tapes) are surging onto the market. … The size of the VCR tape rental market far exceeds the box office theater market, and just about everything else. This "content" will quickly find its way onto long-playing CD-ROMs for your home computer." [Editor's note: The move toward narrowcasting (personalization) has taken place, but TV stations, cable TV, PCs, and newer tablets and smartphones came and are still here. In that respect, the prediction toward PCs only has not been correct.]

To support this goal, we're just beginning cooperative experiments with our Internet node to increase its effective use on a worldwide basis." [Editor's note: This column shows that, very early on, the IEEE Computer Society recognized the importance of the Internet for the distribution of information and worldwide cooperation. This is something that, we often forget, was not at all a common approach in 1994.] Businesses Waking Up to Virtual Reality (p. 8) "VR has undergone three stages of development. The first stage started within the military and scientific communities, especially NASA, which initially developed VR for warfare simulation and as a scientific analysis tool. The second stage of entertainment development and VR-based games at arcades brought the technology to the public's attention. In the third stage, which is just emerging, VR is becoming prominent in the commercial business arena and it promises to revolutionize commerce in the modern world. …

On the Groups Petition for a Change to Society Status (p. 1) "On August 23, 1970 the IEEE Board o... more On the Groups Petition for a Change to Society Status (p. 1) "On August 23, 1970 the IEEE Board of Directors met at Carmel, California to consider petitions for Society status submitted by the Computer and Power Groups. … By providing such individuals the opportunity to become full members of the Computer Society without requiring them to join the IEEE, it is hoped that we will be able to provide a better organization for them while maintaining our service to our more traditional type of member. … I would like to extend an enthusiastic invitation to all who consider themselves computer scientists or engineers to join the IEEE Computer Society." [Editor's note: As you can see, the IEEE Computer Society as we know it today was created in September 1970. It has flourished for 50 years, and I predict a great future for all of us, as information technology will continue to provide essential services to humanity.]

They are mostly interesting for the explanation they give for the technology that existed then and for reminding us of the tremendous progress we have made since.] Evolving Digital Computer Systems Architecture (p. 2) "Computing Architectures are distinguished by the explosive growth of their great variety in the last decade. This article will describe that part of computer history of the last two decades, that has led to the future as seen today, plus point out various architecture trends for the future. In the dark abysm of time-to be more precise, the period surrounding the period mid to late 1950's-computer system design became a recognized profession. About the same time, or somewhat before, designers discovered that there were other computer architectures, alternate to the classic van Neumann type. Since then there has been a tremendous proliferation of different types of computer organizations designed and many even built. This trend will continue for the foreseeable future throughout the final sweep of this century." (p. 5) "By trying to be somewhat compatible with old or current systems, systems architectures which are totally different and innovatively new are difficult to sell to management and customers. Still, in the face of these squelching problems, the field, lately, is beginning to see a formidable number of new architectures!" (p. 8) "The most noticeable trend for next generation computer architectures is the building into the hardware many more features-many of which heretofore were only programed. The basic reason for this trend is twofold, namely: programming is costly and logic is low cost." [Editor's note: The article implies the appearance of many different/novel architectures. However, further reading reveals that what is really meant are things such as separate I/O units, graphic subsystems, intelligent terminals, multiprocessors, parallel architectures, and so on. Despite that somewhat disappointing revelation, the article gives some insights into the thinking about computers 50 years ago. The idea of moving more and more software into hardware-look at IBM-was seen as a great idea then and was tried but has since been mostly discarded in mainline computing.]

Taman Tasik Titiwangsa lakes are popular for water sport activity. Thus, it is important to keep ... more Taman Tasik Titiwangsa lakes are popular for water sport activity. Thus, it is important to keep the health of the lakes at an acceptable level for the optimum usage of water sport activity. The water quality index is used to assess the water quality condition of the lakes. Water quality index (WQI) and interim national water quality standards (INWQS) for Malaysia are used to monitor the health of the lakes. A total of two sample stations were collected at Lake 1 and Lake 2 of Taman Tasik Titiwangsa. Six selected parameters (biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, pH, suspended solid and ammoniacal nitrogen) were used to calculate the water quality index. From the analysis, it showed that both Lake 1 and Lake 2 are Class II condition and visitors can use it for water sport activity. Several recommendations are noted to improve the WQI value for the use of Taman Tasik Titiwangsa visitors especially for water sport activity.

This paper addresses the problem of semi-supervised classification on document collections using ... more This paper addresses the problem of semi-supervised classification on document collections using retraining (also called self-training). A possible application is focused Web crawling which may start with very few, manually selected, training documents but can be enhanced by automatically adding initially unlabeled, positively classified Web pages for retraining. Such an approach is by itself not robust and faces tuning problems regarding parameters like the number of selected documents, the number of retraining iterations, and the ratio of positive and negative classified samples used for retraining. The paper develops methods for automatically tuning these parameters, based on predicting the leave-one-out error for a re-trained classifier and avoiding that the classifier is diluted by selecting too many or weak documents for retraining. Our experiments with three different datasets confirm the practical viability of the approach
