
Michael O'Connell
Michael O’Connell is Professor emeritus at the University of Galway, Ireland (formerly UCG/NUIG), where he was involved in research, teaching and administration since the mid 1970s. His research interests include long-term environmental change with particular focus on farming impact, Holocene woodland history and climate change. He initiated and was first director (1990–2011) of the Palaeoenvironmental Research Unit, University of Galway. He is an elected member of the Royal Irish Academy and is a Humboldt Fellow. As a Humboldt Fellow he has researched at the Historical Coastal Research Institute, Wilhelmshaven and the Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), Potsdam. He is an associate editor of Vegetation History and Archaeobotany. He served as chairperson of the Agricultural History Society of Ireland (2013-2017). Recipient of 'Frank Mitchell' IQUA award for service to Quaternary research and teaching (2021).
