I am a Professor of English linguistics at Université Grenoble Alpes, France, and chair of ALAES, the French society for the linguistics of English.
My research deals with categorisation in the noun phrase and personal pronouns, more particularly:
- grammatical gender (the system in its synchronic and diachronic dimensions, and gender-inclusive language);
- number (grammatical number, and the semantic /plurality/ feature found in collective nouns and other types of pluralities);
- specificities in the way humans, animals or inanimates are construed in language and discourse (Animacy Hierarchy);
- anaphora and reference (for which I am part of the ANR project 'Democrat').
I am interested in the interaction between semantic features and their partial grammaticalisation, coercion mechanisms in language innovation, and competing forms of motivation in language and discourse.

This monograph proposes a comparative approach to all the ways of denoting ‘more than one’ entity... more This monograph proposes a comparative approach to all the ways of denoting ‘more than one’ entity, from collective and aggregate nouns (with the first-ever typology), to count plurals, partly substantivised adjectives and conjoined NPs. This semantic feature approach to plurality, which cuts across number, the count/non-count distinction, and lexical/NP levels, reveals a very consistent Scale of Unit Integration, which establishes clear-cut boundaries for collective nouns, and accommodates cases such as three elephant, cattle or a chain of islands. The study also offers a refined understanding of aggregate nouns (a category nearly as large as that of collective nouns) and quantification in pseudo-partitives, develops Guillaume’s notion of ‘internal plurality’, and proposes the innovative concept of ‘hyperonyms of plural classes’ (e.g. furniture). The Animacy Hierarchy is also found to be influential, beyond hybrid agreement. The book aims to be accessible to scholars of any theoretical background interested in these topics.

This volume presents new research on the pragmatics of personal pronouns. Whereas personal pronou... more This volume presents new research on the pragmatics of personal pronouns. Whereas personal pronouns used to have a reputation of poor substitutes for full NP’s, recent research shows that personal pronouns are a fundamental, if not universal, category, whose pragmatics is central to their understanding. For instance, personal pronouns may indicate attentional continuity or social deixis, and take on genre-specific pragmatic effects. The authors of the present collection investigate such effects and analyse competing forms in context (e.g. she / her in subject position), as well as their pragmatic functions in an extensive range of genres such as advertising, TV series, charity appeals, mother/child interaction or computer-mediated communication. Moreover, one section is devoted to the pragmatics of antecedentless pronouns and so-called ‘impersonal’ personal forms. The volume will be of interest to both scholars and students interested in the pragmatics of functional words.

Face à un constat d'andro-centrisme dans le genre grammatical et lexical, considéré comme le refl... more Face à un constat d'andro-centrisme dans le genre grammatical et lexical, considéré comme le reflet d'un andro-centrisme sociétal, un certain nombre de réformes ont été proposées ces dernières années, au niveau institutionnel. On s'intéresse ici à l'anglais et au français, représentants des deux grands types de systèmes du genre dans le monde (système principalement sémantique / système largement formel, hautement grammaticalisé), en se concentrant sur les noms. Le constat initial est double : les stratégies divergent, de même que les succès (stabilisation relative, au moins pour le domaine public, en anglais ; non stabilisation pour le français, et fortes oppositions même chez des locuteurs qui considèrent l'asymétrie des représentations problématique). L'étude proposée ici vise à montrer qu'au moins une large partie des succès et écueils s'explique par des osbtacles linguistiques et cognitifs (liés alors au traitement du discours, en encodage et décodage), bien plus puissants que les questions de pertinence sociologique des réformes parce qu'ils dépassent très largement le cadre du genre dans les références aux humains : (anglais :) sémantisme lié au statut superordonné de noms, sémantisme lié au processus de composition ; (français :) Principe de Pertinence dans le traitement des messages ; ordre linéaire de la lecture ; existence nécessaire d'un genre par défaut, d'un genre « moins marqué » (pour les humains et bien au-delà). Le présent article conclut que les usages ne peuvent évoluer que s'ils ne connaissent pas de tels obstacles. C'est le cas en anglais de la stratégie d'indifférenciation. Cette stratégie ne pourrait s'appliquer de la même manière au français, le genre étant généralement visible dès le déterminant. Cela dit, l'indifférenciation apparaît bien comme une forme d'évolution naturelle en français informel (l'étude précise sous quelle forme), et les données conduisent à conclure que le doublet, malgré les préconisations, ne pourra devenir un mode unique d'évolution (il est en revanche approprié dans certains contextes). L'étude prône une diversification des moyens ; des exemples concrets sont donnés pour illustrer cette diversification dans différents types de textes.

Anaphor' and 'Antecedent' in Nominal Anaphora: Definitions and Theroretical implications

Whether in grammars, dictionaries or encyclopaedias of linguistics, anaphora, which etymologicall... more Whether in grammars, dictionaries or encyclopaedias of linguistics, anaphora, which etymologically means back reference (ana-= backwards,-phorein = carry), is unanimously defined as an interpretive relation between at least two elements, in which one element guides the interpretation of the other(s). For Asher & Simpson [1994 : 116], for instance, "an element or construction is dependent for its interpretation on being associated with something else in the context", while to Huddleston & Pullum [2002 : 1453], "anaphora is the relation between an anaphor and an antecedent, where the interpretation of the anaphor is determined via that of the antecedent" [see also, for instance, DUCROT & SCHAEFFER 1995 : 458 or CHARAUDEAU & MAINGUENEAU 2002 : 45]. But although all linguistic frameworks share this definition, there is wide variety as to what the notion of anaphora is taken to cover, which in turn has consequences on the senses given to the words 'anaphor' and 'antecedent', and on the boundary between anaphora and deixis. Anaphora is typically said to be endophoric-that is, to have an antecedent which is a segment of text. It is then opposed to deixis, in which an expression also gets its interpretation indirectly, but prototypically via a situational element, indicated for instance by a gesture. Anaphoric relations might be of various types-coreferentiality, association, resumption, ...and involve nominal, verbal or adverbial elements, as illustrated by the following utterances: (1) Bruce smiled to himself as he walked along Forth Street. (nominal anaphora) (2) Please complete this form in full. Failure to do so will result in your application to join the scheme being rejected. (verbal anaphora) Cercles 22 (2012) Laure Gardelle / 26 (3) I put the keys in the top drawer; they should still be there. (adverbial anaphora) But this is only one possible approach to anaphora, anaphors and antecedents. The present paper proposes to give an overview of the meanings that these words acquire in various theoretical frameworks, more specifically in one domain: the noun phrase. The aim is to make out the theoretical implications of such choices, for a better grasp, ultimately, of the mechanisms at work in anaphora processing. Three theoretical approaches are examined in turn: Binding Theory, textual anaphora, and the cognitive-pragmatic definition.

Il s’agit notamment de comprendre comment le traitement des pronoms s’insère dans une modélisation plus large du langage, et à l’inverse, comment celle-ci influence les perspectives sur la classe. Plus spécifiquement, hormis certaines modélisations de l’accès à la référence, c’est principalement la Grammaire Cognitive de Langacker qui est considérée ici. Après une définition du terme même de perspective « cognitive », l’étude met en avant les caractéristiques partagées des pronoms dans ce modèle (spécification schématique, associée à un ancrage situationnel s’ils constituent des expressions nominales complètes ; fonction référentielle, à distinguer du défini). Languages tend to exhibit different treatments of the entities of the extralinguistic world, with... more Languages tend to exhibit different treatments of the entities of the extralinguistic world, with phrases that denote human beings (or more generally animates) at the top and phrases that denote inanimates at the bottom. This ranking is known as the Animacy Hierarchy. Croft (2003: 128) terms it one of the 'best known grammatical hierarchies', and the notion is so crucially important that it has made its way into the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Linguistics (Matthews 2007) or the Oxford English Dictionary (2017). 'Animacy' is not to be understood just in its everyday sense, as 'endowed with life, living, alive' (OED 2017); the Animacy Hierarchy further isolates a 'human' category, reflecting an anthropocentric filter on conceptualisation. This is obvious, for instance, in the gender system of standard English. First, while humans (especially adults) are referred to as he or she when their sex is known, a statistical analysis shows that animals have a nearly 20% chance of being referred to as it when the antecedent noun phrase specifies their sex, regardless of whether the anaphor is far from the antecedent or in the same clause (Gardelle 2013). This is evidence of a filter for humans alone. Secondly, the issue of sexism in the use of purportedly sex-neutral he only targets references to humans, not animals: he for the average American or with the antecedent 'your child' in non-specific contexts is viewed as problematic, but it does not come under any criticism when used for the non-specific raccoon (e.g. you cannot have a meaningful conversation with a raccoon, although he may occasionally nod 1) (Gardelle 2015, Chevalier et al. 2017). The implicatures of this human-based filter are well summed up by Yamamoto (1999: 1): 'The concept of 'animacy' can be regarded as some kind of assumed cognitive scale extending from human through animal to inanimate.' 1 'How to outsmart a raccoon Okay, let's start from the beginning on this one. Everyone says raccoons are smart, but that isn't true. With the possible exception of Uncle Bob, every human being you've ever met is smarter than the smartest raccoon that's ever been. A raccoon can't count to ten, at least not out loud, and you can't have a meaningful conversation with a raccoon, although he may occasionally nod in a way that implies he understands and agrees with your position on protectionism and its effect on international trade. International audienceThis study aims at describing the interactions between co-referential chain... more International audienceThis study aims at describing the interactions between co-referential chains and globalisation. The corpus is composed of 26 German, English and French press articles, featuring the same main referent, the Concorde, in the context of two different events (the 2000 crash and the 2003 last flights) that can potentially trigger some form of emotional involvement. A tool-based analysis of the co-referential chains shows many similarities, which tends to confirm the globalisation hypothesis. However, there are also some significant differences, depending not only on possibilities and constraints in each linguistic system but also on different choices in the way information is processed. In other words, globalisation does not (necessarily) mean indistinguishability.Cet article est consacré aux interactions entre chaînes de référence et globalisation. Le corpus de presse étudié est composé de 26 textes en allemand, anglais et français, centrés sur un même référent principal, le Concorde, et deux événements distincts (accident de 2000 et derniers vols de 2003), susceptibles de donner lieu à une forme d’investissement affectif. Si l’analyse outillée du corpus montre un grand nombre de similarités dans les chaînes, invitant à l’hypothèse d’une globalisation communicationnelle, on constate également certaines divergences, parfois liées au système linguistique de chaque langue, mais révélant surtout des différences culturelles en matière de représentation du référent, qui font conclure que globalisation ne signifie pas indifférenciation
