Massimo Carlo Giannini
I took my PhD in 1997 at the "Scuola Superiore di Scienze Storiche" (Advanced School for Historical Studies) of the University of the Republic of San Marino with a thesis about the taxation of the clergy in the State of Milan in XVIth and XVIIth centuries. Then I was research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Rome (1998) and in Spain in 1999 with a grant by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italian National Research Council). Later I was post-doctoral research fellow and lecturer (2005) at the University of Teramo. Since December 2020 I'm Full Professor in Early Modern History at the Department of Communication of University of Teramo where I teach Early Modern History and History and Religions.
I am a member of the Accademia Ambrosiana - Classe di Studi Borromaici (Milan) and of the Roman Committee of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism (University of Notre Dame). Since 2018 I am Coordinator of the Scientific Board of the Ph.D. Program in History of Europe of the University of Teramo and member of the scientific board of the reviews "Archivum Historiae Pontificiae" and "Manuscrits".
My main research interests are:
1) The State of Milan during the early modern age: political and religious topics (with special attention to Church and Inquisition history, and to fiscal and administrative history).
2) The papal finances in the early modern age.
3) The theoretical foundations of taxation between theology and politics (XVIth and XVIIth centuries).
4) The Religious Orders as political networks in the Early modern world, with special attention to the Dominican Order (Ordo fratrum praedicatorum).
5) The problem of exclusion of non-white people from the priesthood and religious orders in the Early modern global catholicism(s).
