The focus of this paper is a corpus study of the representation of rape in the mainstream quality press in the UK and a discussion of the broader social implications of such representation. This paper uses corpus analysis tools to study the discourse that surrounds the terms ‘rape’ and ‘raped’ and their collocates in a corpus of four British quality newspapers and compares the findings of the corpus analysis with corpus-external data (e.g. statistics on rape crimes, government reports, rape myths) to determine whether (and to what extent) the images foregrounded by the press in the corpus echo such contextual information. On the basis of this comparison, I argue that the representation of rape in the corpus reflects and reinforces dominant stereotypical understandings of rape rooted in patriarchal conceptualisations of gender roles and sexualities and perpetuated by established professional practices in mainstream journalism.

This article seeks to establish the connection—via shared discourse—between Incels and mainstream pornography. With an interdisciplinary approach which involves a Corpus Linguistics analysis of Reddit forum data, research into digital behaviors, and a feminist critique, this article focuses on the commonalities between the language of pornography and that of Incels. In doing so, it demonstrates how both pornography and Incels are different manifestations of the same misogyny. The findings of this study highlight the normalization of violence against women (VAW), which continues to be endemic in society, enabled and exacerbated by contemporary technologies.

One of the most striking findings from our report is that journalists did not appear to explicitly scrutinise or challenge claims made by politicians or pressure groups. Although many linguists have already carried out research on this issue, especially from a sociological point of view,1 a little less has been done for literary genre. This paper explores the differences between male and female literary writing, the main aim being that of recognising specific linguistic strategies used in the narration due to gender variations.
Through a detailed analysis, some tendencies have been detected that could reveal the sex of the author. It is no coincidence that Mary Anne Evans’ (better known as George Eliot – her pen name) writings have been chosen for this research: a female writer who hides her identity by signing her novels with a male name. This study answers two research questions: are there any differences concerning lexical and syntactic features according to the author’s gender? Does the author of different gender have a distinct way of reporting fiction in their respective narrative style? Moreover, the analysis has been based not only on the diversity among corpora collected, but the focus has been on the similarity as well, discovering a significant resemblance. The wordlists comparison has thus revealed that the preposition usage can be seen as almost equal in both corpora, and they seem to turn their attention to the female world, probably because they represented their audience. Several lexical patterns have emerged, highlighting different verbal expressions in the description of characters physicality, in the representation of physical contact in general, in the use of pronouns and unequal narrative style (not necessarily attributable to gender linguistic variation).

We spend a great part of our lives communicating at work. When we enter the world of work we discover many forms of spoken and written communication that are completely new to us: with time we learn how to understand and use them. The language of work has an important role in the lives of most people. Even outside the workplace people participate in professional interactions as customers, clients or patients. Most people are aware that the way they communicate with friends and family is different from the way they communicate with their boss or a client; but they're not able to say exactly which features distinguish professional language from everyday language. Workplace discourse is linked to professional and organizational contexts, and concerns a type of communication which occurs between people with different roles, for example boss-employee, sellercustomer etc. Examining workplace language involves studying a the social roles too. We have to consider two fundamental questions: 1) What is special about the language of work? 2) How does the language of work vary in different workplaces? According to Drew and Heritage (1992), the institutional talk, as they call workplace, vary from ordinary conversation in a number of ways:

The decrease in use of the declensions of who in the last century is a macroscopical phenomena of the evolution of the English language. It is well true that it was already predicted by eminent scholars in the past, but still many linguists, prescriptive linguists, show to be disgusted by a use of who in a question like who are you buying it for?, arguing that it should be rendered with for whom are you buying it? This paper investigates the usage of the three declensions of who with techniques of Corpus Linguistics in British geographical variety of Academic English.

Nell’ultimo secolo abbiamo assistito ad un intenso sviluppo dell’industria dell’intrattenimento. Con un’analisi di questo stampo si è notato quello che può essere definito un diffuso fenomeno di ‘risorgenza norrena’ in diversi ambiti della cultura: romanzi di fantasia (recenti o meno), fumetti, serie TV e anche l’industria videoludica ha registrato questo rinato interesse del pubblico per il mondo norreno: Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, God of War e nel prossimo God of War V: Ragnarok; è proprio su quest’ultimo campo che la presente tesi si è sviluppata, in particolare sul legame tra The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim e la tradizione norrena.
Sono state prese in considerazione in questo elaborato a questo fine alcune delle caratteristiche che più rivelano l’influsso che la tradizione nordica antica ha esercitato sui creatori di Skyrim:
-Geografia,
-Collocazione storica,
-Onomastica,
-Società e cultura materiale e immateriale.

La semplificazione delle strutture frasali, con conseguente riduzione delle subordinate, è tra i più diffusi espedienti utilizzati per facilitare la mutua comprensione. In questo elaborato mostreremo come questa semplificazione è efficace anche per la comprensione da parte di una macchina, attraverso un'analisi quantitativa e poi qualitativa dell'output del parser di Tint.

In questo elaborato si prendono in consideraizone due delle teorie semantiche tra le più note: la teoria dei tratti e la semantica distribuzionale. Esse costituiscono qui la base per un'analisi critica della distribuzione di due lessemi del vocabolario di base della lingua italiana: uomo e donna. Quello che se ne ricava è una visione interna alla questione della discriminazione di genere da un punto di vista propriamente linguistico. Si è poi introdotto un breve confronto interlinguistico con l'inglese, per evidenziare somiglianze e differenze tra le due lingue. In particolare, per l'italiano si è guardato sia ai verbi per cui le parole target fungevano da soggetto che quelli per cui fungevano da oggetto, mentre per l'inglese ci si è limitati a guardare quelli per cui le parole analizzate fungevano da oggetto sintattico.
