L'economia al pari della lingua e della parentela è un vero e proprio sistema nel quale le relazioni tra le varie componenti costituiscono e trasformano le componenti stesse. Queste relazioni sistematiche sono di natura narrativa in quanto, i soggetti che fanno parte di questo sistema, costruiscono, decostruiscono e ricostruiscono la propria identità in funzione di altri soggetti con cui entrano in relazione ora contrattuale ora polemica. In questo sistema di significazione interagiscono le due diverse forme dell'esperienza umana: la dimensione sensibile (la prassi economico-produttiva) e la parte intellegibile (valori economici e della marca). Il progredire della crisi economica negli ultimi anni ha fatto sì che in un ambito fondamentale della dimensione economica come il retail, si innestasse una particolare controtendenza. Partendo dalla narratività come principio esplicativo, la crisi può essere letta come un antisoggetto che entra in relazione polemica col soggetto impresa: questa implementerà delle tattiche che consentiranno di disgiungersi dall'attante oggetto, ovvero la chiusura dell'azienda. Alcune di queste tattiche prevedono la chiusura di punti vendita e in generale l'abbattimento dei costi sfruttando al massimo il web e le campagne social. Il contesto economico e le esperienze soggettive si modificano, per cui la dialettica fra ricezione e trasmissione in ciò che viene chiamato tendenza varia. La tendenza individua un microuniverso emergente "capace di far convergere verso di sé atteggiamenti e comportamenti" (Ceriani, 2007) che si estendono trasversalmente; una continua tensione tra valori preesistenti e usi della società, i quali perseguono lo stesso ritmo di mutazione. Ecco che si installa una concezione opposta alla tendenza a ridurre i costi, ovvero una controtendenza; dal punto di vista economico si fanno degli investimenti in retail da parte di aziende che nascono come brand on-line.

In this essay I attempt to position the development of consciousness within a semiotic perspective. I have drawn my inspiration mainly from Peircean semiotics but also from work in the field of neurobiology by Gerald Edelman, and in systemic functional linguistics by Michael Halliday. My reasons for doing this at a conference convened specifically to discuss issues of basic and applied research related to Artificial Intelligence is because it is precisely the interactive (and thus also intersubjective) nature of the evolutionary development of consciousness as intentionality in human beings that seems one of the most difficult and most often subverted aspects of human experience for experts working with modelling systems addressing such problems as natural language processing, development of inferencing and knowledge systems, interface design and indeed, advanced human-computer interaction in general. Possibly this paper will provide some food for thought, and open up for useful cross-disciplinary discussions here, and in the longer term, not only with the community of researchers working on more technologically oriented parts of Norwegian AI research, but also the humanities and natural sciences.

I have chosen to approach the question of consciousness from a semiotic perspective because I believe the field of semiotics provides the most useful conceptual apparatus for examining these issues within a broad cross-disciplinary framework, and because I believe that working within a semiotic framework is one of the most profitable ways for myself as a humanist scholar to approach and investigate central issues within this particular field of study. I am aware that the general field of semiotics often is seen as diametrically opposed to that of cognitive science, but I believe that the most exciting area of scientific discourse today is to be found precisely in the area of overlap between these two rather different ways of approaching and studying human phenomena.

"Understanding Play Practices: Contributions to the State of the Art",

Semiotics draws inspiration for its qualitative methodologies from many fields of scientific and cultural discourse. It aims to understand cultural production and interpretation practices by way of core theoretical notions such as narrativity, enunciation, encyclopedia, and textual openness. A continual refinement and renewal of these notions is driven by comparative analyses of problematic empirical objects. One such object is computer games which are among the hottest contemporary objects of study in new media semiotics. A central theoretical notion used today to understand computer games is practice, which is seen as standing in opposition to the more traditional notion of text. Panel participants will discuss gameplay practices from various theoretical standpoints, with the common goal of describing these practices in ways that open for dialogue and interaction with theoretical approaches by other disciplines and fields of study. The panel will open by discussing how, in computer games, the reader-text interface has been radically reconfigured, opening up for more effective forms of player agency. Some contemporary play practices will be discussed on the basis of video footage of actual game sessions, highlighting the role of player bodies in gameplay space. The role of keys in RPGs will be foregrounded to show how effects of player action in games may be constrained by game objects. Finally, we shall focus on gameplay practices that go beyond single computer games - in commercial and political Alternate Reality Games. The focus will be on how A-R games create innovative mimetic relationships with real life, engaging players in transworld transmedia practices.

The principle question discussed in this essay is essentially a philosophical or existential one: in our increasingly remediated, interconnected, physically and virtually mobile contemporary world, is it is conceivable, or feasible, for us actually to be “here, there, and everywhere” at one and the same time?
Have our predominantly “local” personal, professional and collective narrative histories, and the various cultural traditions that have grown out of these, really furnished us with relational identity skills that enable us to participate positively and actively in ongoing globali- sation processes and to play a constructive, active, ethical role in the global gameplay arena? Or do we need to work more with non-familiar forms of otherness if we want to develop new types of “glocal” identities, able to mediate and transcend the emotional, conceptual, cultural and other divides that may hinder the identification, management and just balancing of “global” and “local” needs, rights and interests?
As a contribution to further interdisciplinary debate on this and related themes, in media studies and elsewhere, this essay intentionally seeks to provoke1, by offering some engaged, informed but clearly speculative considerations, regarding the valorisation, application and evaluation of new digital media designed to facilitate ludic transworld, transmedia cooperi- tion2 at-a-distance, to develop practical strategies to engage in responsible, ethical, ecological, mutually sustainable ways, with non-copresent, non-local others and their own past, present and future actual, and possible, worlds.

Il progetto ARAIE - Archivio Risorse Audiovisuali sull’Infanzia e l’Educazione - nasce nell'ambito di ricerca scientifica dell'Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, con lo scopo di indagare il rapporto esistente tra il cinema e il mondo dell’educazione e dell'infanzia in particolare.
L’archivio online raccoglie e permette di visualizzare in rete sia i cortometraggi presentati nel corso delle ultime edizioni del Reggio Film Festival, con particolare riferimento alle opere dedicate all’infanzia, sia i corti realizzati, nell’ambito del Concorso di cortometraggi Non uno di meno promosso dall'Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia e rivolto alle scuole.
Tale notevole patrimonio audiovisivo è valorizzare sia mediante un preliminare lavoro di analisi e di classificazione, sia mediante la predisposizione di una infrastruttura telematica che consenta ad un pubblico più vasto di accedere all’archivio per avviare ricerche e consultazioni basate su parole-chiave riferite alle principali tematiche comunicative e pedagogiche.

The evaluation of text mining projects in terms of financial performance is the main topic argued by management involved in judging this kind of investment. However, text mining being a particular case of knowledge management, it has not only a tangible impact in terms of return on investment but also an intangible one: a lot of benefits coming from the investment in this knowledge management solution are not directly translated into returns, but they must be considered in the process of judgment to integrate the financial perspective of analysis with the non-financial ones.

Twenty four percent of independent directors in Russel 3,000 have continuously served in the same …rm for …fteen years or more. Are such lengthy terms bene…cial to the companies?. On a sample of S&P 1500 over the period 1998-2012 we show strong positive e¤ects on Tobin’s Q if a company has one director on the board who served 20 years or more. Long tenured directors protect the …rm and other board members by signi…cantly reducing the risk of corporate scandals. Extended tenures allow directors to acquire more information generating better performance also when the cost of information acquisition is high. Superior information translates in higher returns by long tenured directors from insiders purchases and sales. Our results have important implications on the ongoing debate on setting tenure limits for outside directors and suggest that a single rule applying to all independent directors may not be optimal.

During the last twenty years economics literature and debates have increasingly referred to institutions as the answers to the longstanding questions concerning how economic growth arises, what policies can be used to promote best results in terms of economic performances and what accounts for differences in GDP levels among countries so that the analysis of the institutional framework under which any economy operates has now become an indispensable object of research. This paper will investigate the impact of institutional quality on economic growth over sixty years among countries at different stages of development recurring to three institutional indicators tested through a pooled regression model and a fixed effects model.
