These resources are the so-called “c-book units” (“c” for creative), which are digital books produced within a socio-technological environment allowing meshing narratives with interconnected, interactive and dynamic digital artefacts (widgets), to enhance Creative Mathematical Thinking. We illustrate the design of a c-book unit within a biomathematics context aimed at enhancing creative mathematical thinking using a wide range of digital widgets.

It focuses especially on the influence of both the CoI context and socio-technical environment. We begin by describing the context of the “M C Squared” European project in the framework of which this research has been carried out, followed by the presentation of the conceptual and technical tools used in this project to ease and document social interactions in the design of innovative learning resources promoting Creative Mathematical Thinking in the users. We focus on two main forces: tools and culture, which supported the collaborative design work between two CoIs.

Assigned to creativity: didactical contract negotiation and technology

This article focuses on a study carried out in the framework of this project in France experimenting such a c-book unit and highlights a particular obstacle created by a didactical contract effect related to creativity in the French mathematics classroom: high achieving students perform well on content related to an official assignment but have difficulties engaging in unusual creative problems. The article concludes on possible ways to circumvent it in order to foster the unleashing of mathematical creativity in all students.

A first group of functionalities is currently available (http://epsilonwriter.com). It contains equivalent drag&drop, e.g., a drag&drop of 3x onto 2x in 2x-4=3x provides –x-4=0, a drag&drop of 3x inside the parentheses in 3x(2x+3) provides 3x²+9x. Factoring out from a sum, simplifying fractions, applying substitutions to expressions, multiplying an equation by an expression, side-by-side adding equations can also be performed by drag&drop. It is particularly easy to solve simultaneous equations. Each calculation step is explained in a way chosen by the user. These functionalities also contain schemas for solving quadratic equations with the discriminant and cubic equations with Cardan’s formulas, see demos at: http://www.epsilonwriter.com/en/top10demos/ New functionalities have been recently i...

These resources are the so-called “c-book units” (“c” for creative), which are digital books produced within a socio-technological environment allowing meshing narratives with interconnected, interactive and dynamic digital artefacts (widgets), to promote Creative Mathematical Thinking (CMT). We have developed a methodology to support creative design and the a priori evaluation of the CMT potential of the c-book units’ affordances. We illustrate here the design and evaluation of a c-book unit within a biomathematics context aimed at supporting learning and mathematical reasoning, using a wide range of digital widgets. We discuss the design choices resulting in the resource affordances to promote mathematical creativity in terms of personalized non-linear path, constructivist approach, and meta-cognition based activities, among others. We present experts’ a priori evaluation of the resource CMT potential.
