Studies have shown that the programmes usually attract more female students, who could not study in the full time mode especially in their earlier years of age. This study assessed the perception of the female students on the impact of their studies in empowering them for greater productivity in their families and society. The population of this study is made up of final year students in the four types of part time programmes of the College in the 20014/2015 session. The sample is made up of 146 students (out of 150) who were available at the time of data collection. The programmes are: the weekend Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE); the Weekend Degree; the Sandwich NCE and the Part time Degree. Their perceptions were obtained using a structured questionnaire. The data collected was analyzed using percentages and mean ratings (). The results showed that the female students perceived that their studies so far have imparted positively their capability, disposition, attitudes and aspirations in the following specific areas: • Confidence to perform leadership roles in the society () • Realization of the importance of early education of the girl child () • Confidence to support equal education of both boys and girls in the family () • Desire to study further if given the opportunity () • Disposition that marriage should not disrupt the education of girls () • Opportunity to support family income significantly () • Understanding the limitation of females who are not educated from contributing their best in the society () • Confidence to aspire for higher positions and jobs in the society () These results which portray profound reality elucidate the potential of the part time programmes to enhance the self concept and productivity of women who dare to rise to the challenge of their low level of education. These female students formed 65% of the total number of students in that session, with 15% of them in the age range below 25years, 72% in the range (25-40years) while 13% are above 40years.Their perceptions imply that the experiences, knowledge and skills which they acquired during their studies could empower them to encourage the girl children in the families to enroll for and complete their higher education before marriage. Recommendations based on these result are focused on the ways to re-position these part-time programmes so as to sustain their potentials in empowering women for overall national development. One of such ways is to organize separate accreditation of the part time programmes so as to ensure their quality just as it is done for the full time mode.

In addition, the diversities in the quality of entrants into teacher training institutions provide reasonable divide between developed and developing nations of the world. This study aims to assess the pre-service teachers' competencies in literacy and numeracy skills at the entry point and at the end of their second year in tertiary institutions in Delta State of Nigeria. Two tests were used to assess the literacy and numeracy skills. The findings of this study suggest that the competencies of the pre-service teachers in literacy and numeracy skills were average and very low respectively both at the entry point and after the second year of their training. However, there was significant growth in the competencies of the pre-service teachers in both literacy and numeracy skills within the period. The results also suggest that secondary school location of the pre-service teachers had an influence on their level of competence in literacy unlike numeracy skills. These results indicate to a need to re-visit the quality of entrants into the teacher training institutions in order to produce high quality teachers.

An ongoing international intervention is the African Women's Decade (AWD) which gives regular report of the state of gender equality in participating nations. Review reports of AWD show that there is profound gender inequality in enrolment especially in higher (tertiary) education in disfavour of women in Nigeria. In the same vein, recent studies show the preponderance of females in some conventional part time mode of study in higher institutions, which is seen as a positive sign. To explore these issues, the College of Education, Agbor, is used as a case study. The study employed a descriptive survey design and drew upon available data from documents on enrolment for the five types of part time programmes run in the College; the sandwich (for Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), the Weekend NCE, the Outreach programmes (NCE); the regular part-time for first degree in Education and the Weekend degree programme. The study specifically determined the status of female enrolment in the programmes from documents which are officially available from 2010/2011 to 2014/2015 academic session. Five research questions guided the study. Simple percentages and Chi-square statistics were used to analyse the data. Bar Charts were used to make the female-male enrolment status more vivid. The results showed that female enrolment surpassed male enrolment significantly in all the part-time NCE programmes (sandwich, weekend and outreach) considered in this study. With the exception of physics political science and geography education subjects the disparity in enrolment status observed in the regular part time degree programme was in favour of the females, for the remaining 13 subjects, considered in this study. The weekend degree programme attracted more females than males also. It is hoped that the observed gender gap in favour of women in the part-time programmes will sensitize all stakeholders, the higher institutions, and the government on the inherent potential of this mode of study for the achievement of gender equality in education. Recommendations are made on the ways this potential could be harnessed in Nigeria, to achieve gender equality in higher education (tertiary education), without compromising standards. The major recommendations include: Subsidizing the cost of studying in various categories of part-time programmes in higher education for women, subjecting the part-time programmes to accreditation along side the full-time ones so as to ensure quality, and increasing the accessibility of these programmes in terms of location for women in Nigeria.

The extent to which a transformation agenda succeeds depends on a lot of factors that are peculiar characteristics of nations at the period. This paper surveys the importance of teachers in national development as an obvious background to adequate preparation of teachers. The importance accorded to the status of teachers in the global community is presented as a factor that can control the preparation of teachers in any nation. The paper shows that the laudable strategies which the country seeks to implement in transforming the preparation of teachers meet international standards, but peculiar challenges are encountered in Nigeria. The high global rankings of Nigeria in terms of corruption, poverty, examination malpractice, and unemployment are among the peculiar challenges. Using the example of nations that succeeded in the preparation of teachers for national development, a position is presented in this paper; that preparation of teachers for national development should be pursued concurrently with ethical turnaround .

The major goals of reducing dropout syndrome, and acquisitions of numeracy and literacy skills, set out to be achieved in the UBE programme, are envisioned to be achievable through the creation of positive classroom climatic. The paper presented general strategies which are inherent in creating a positive classroom. The practical approach which centered on creating leverage by teachers is elucidated. An example of a teacher's method of creating a positive classroom climate that resulted in staying in school is included. In conclusion, the empowerment of basic education teachers with capacity and skills and required motivation will enable them to establish a positive classroom climate in schools using the practical approaches discussed in this paper. The establishment of a positive classroom climate will consequently help in reducing the dropout rate at the basic education level.

That of the associated teachers must accompany any consideration for a desirable education of a group of persons in an area of academic discipline. This paper examined the understanding of qualitative education of physics teachers for the various levels of Physics teaching. The current structure of Physics teacher education programmes is discussed. The impacts of the current structure on the present system of education are x-rayed as issues of concern. A translation of the issues into working ideas for qualitative education of teachers of Physics and Physics-related professionals formed the main thrust of this paper. In conclusion, the education of the Physics teacher, which would lead to the desired development in related academic discipline, is a possibility, when the content of the teacher education curriculum is planned along with the same goals.

It became necessary to train and retrain teachers to utilize and sustain adequately these innovative modes of learning which emerged. A planned orientation and training were organized for lecturers in the College of Education, Agbor, to enable them to acquire basic skills to teach online during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. This study was aimed to evaluate the perceptions of the lecturers on their ability to teach online after the training. A survey design was used to obtain the lecturers' selfratings. The results obtained suggest that the lecturers perceived that the training enabled them to:- Acquire enough skills to teach online with technical assistance. Use WhatsApp text, audio and video messaging, SMS, and Email to teach online. They did not perceive that the training enabled them to:- Use Zoom to teach online. Acquire skills to teach online without technical assistance. Their gender and teaching subjects had no significant influence on their perceptions. Generally, the lecturers perceived that they acquired skills to teach online using the most familiar basic tools, but they needed technical assistance. Since there is prevalent COVD-19 lockdown due to emerging new variants in various nations, strategies that can be used to enhance the capacities of lecturers, through retraining, to teach online are recommended.
