Mauro Perani

Mauro Perani was born in Castel Goffredo (Mantova) on 16 December 1949 from Bruno and Nelia Maria Mantovani. After obtaining the Diploma at the Classical High school “Ginnasio Liceo Classico Virgilio” in Mantua, he graduated in philosophy at Bologna University in July 1975 with a MA thesis on "The Hebrew conception of time. A survey". He graduated newly getting a second MA in Oriental History at the Bologna University in 1982 with a thesis on "The Jewish presence in Sardinia". In the summers 1981 and 1982 and then in the year 1983 he studied in Jerusalem with a scholarship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since 1977 to 1995 he was for 18 years Professor of Hebrew and Judaism at the Institute of Advanced Religious Studies in Bologna. Researcher of Hebrew at the University of Bologna in the years 1996-1999, and Full Professor of Hebrew since 2000 to 2019 at the Department of Cultural Heritage of Bologna University, in Ravenna Campus, and he is currently professor emeritus. Since 2003 up to July 2011 he was Member of the European Association for Jewish Studies (EAJS: www.eurojewishstudies.org) Executive Committee, and President of the EAJS from 2006 to 2010. Perani since 2009 up to 2019 was the President of the Italian Association for the Study of Judaism (AISG: www.aisg.it). Since 1984 he works at the "Italian Genizah Project", project born in Italy in 1981 which generated the Project "Books within Books" created by Judith Olszowy-Schlanger (http://www.hebrewmanuscript.com/). In July 2013 he received the To'ar le-Shem Kavod or the PhD honoris causa from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for his researches and discoveries of Medieval Hebrew Manuscipts Fragments reused as bookbinding in Italian Archives and Libraries. His main fields of research are: 1. the research of the Medieval Hebrew parchment manuscripts folios reused ad bookbinding in the Archives and Libraries of Italy; 2. the study of the Italian Jewish Cemeteries Epitaphs, of which he published already 9 books in the series "Corpus Epitaphiorum Hebraicorum Italiae" (CEHI) published by La Giuntina Press in Florence (https://www.giuntina.it/AISG_6/CEHI_5/); 3. and the study of the Pinqasim compiled by the Italian Jews before in Hebrew up around the late 17th c. and later in Italian, namely the registers containing the minutes of the Italian Jewish communities, both of the General Council and the Charity Confraternities, as a new, up to present few studied internal historical sources, being the majority of the previous studied made based on external Christian Sources.

ITALIANO
Mauro Perani è Professore Ordinario di Ebraico presso l’Università di Bologna nel Dipartimento di Beni Culturali, distaccato a Ravenna. Dopo aver conseguito due lauree a Bologna, in Filosofia nel 1975 con una tesi sulla concezione del tempo nell'ebraismo, e in Storia orientale nel 1982 con una tesi sulla presenza degli ebrei in Sardegna, ha studiato a Gerusalemme negli anni . Presidente della European Association for Jewish Studies (EAJS) nel quadriennio 2006-2010, presiede dal 2009 a oggi l’Associazione Italiana per lo Studio del Giudaismo (AISG), dopo esserne stato il Tesoriere dal 1983 al 2000 e il Segretario dal 2000 al 2009. Dal 1984 lavora al “Progetto Genizah italiana” ossia al censimento e alla catalogazione dei manoscritti ebraici riusati come legature negli archivi e biblioteche d’Italia, fondato nel 1981 da Giuseppe Baruch Sermoneta. Nel giugno del 2013 la Hebrew University di Gerusalemme gli ha conferito il Dottorato honoris causa per il suo lavoro sui manoscritti ebraici. Nel 2008 ha fondato presso l’editrice Giuntina la collana Corpus Epitaphiorum Hebraicorum Italiae. Da una decina di anni studia le fonti interne per la storia degli ebrei italiani, costituite dai verbali dei registri comunitari e delle confraternite di carità, compilati in ebraico e in italiano.
