From the nine-teenth century onward the bodily nature of the human being became importantin the philosophical discourse about many questions of humanity. The rise of sport as a cultural phenomenon was linked to debates about the body. Sport focuses on the body and its functions and thus sport is one of the cultural areas where national, ethnic, religious or gender-related body images are constructed. In a bibliographical introduction the article covers the research on the topic body and sports with regard to four different body images constructed withinthe framework of East European sports: Gender images, the Jewish body, Slavic bodies and Muslim bodies. Focusing on three different examples the text aims at an overview on the history of body and sports in Eastern Europe from the late nineteenth century onwards. The first example is the rivalry of German "Turnen" and sports among East European Jews before and after W...

To our amazement, the discussion caused a very keen reaction, especially in Europe. Our modest publication was immediately dubbed as nearly a forge of Kremlin ideas regarding "memory wars," which, of course, is flattering, but, alas, is not true. which we gladly share with our readers. 1

Hirš Lekerts Rache. Gewalteskalation an der Peripherie des Zarenreichs um 1900
Osteuropa, 2016

The Jews in the Pale of Settlement represented an allegedly dangerous mix of alien religious traditions and political radicalism. Tsarist policy responded to this complex situation with a particularly repressive policy. The microcosm of the Vilna province in spring 1902 shows how imperial and anti-imperial violence escalated step by step. A key event in this escalation was the assassination of Viktor von Wahl, the governor of the Vilna province, by the Jewish shoemaker Hirsh Lekert. Lekert was executed, but his example was instructive. In the revolutionary year of 1905, violence on the periphery spread to the point of conflagration.

European Sport Historiography: Challenges and Opportunities
Journal of Sport History, 2011
SPORT AS A PARTICIPANT ACTIVITY and as a spectator entertainment has been a central cultural feat... more SPORT AS A PARTICIPANT ACTIVITY and as a spectator entertainment has been a central cultural feature of European economic, social, and political life in the “long” twentieth century. European sport has developed—and has been studied—primarily within the framework of the nation state. There is now a critical mass of research on the development of sport in continental Europe, from the diffusion of British sport in the late nineteenth century to the collapse of the Soviet bloc in the late twentieth century. However, there is no general account of the modern history of European sport from a comparative and international perspective. And until recently, there has been no attempt to draw together and critically examine the various strands of the relevant research emerging from across Europe and North America. Indeed no single person or even small group of individuals could hope to master the linguistically diffuse research material on the subject, and there are very few forums for collabo...

Invention of a Vanished World Photographs of Traditional Jewish Life in the Russian Pale of Settlement
Jahrbucher Fur Geschichte Osteuropas, 2009

In the early Twentieth century in particular, Jewish ethnography identified and established religious Jews as national Jews. Ethnographic photography was part of a general trend among secular Jewish intellectuals to gather the remnants of the Jewish past in order to give rise to a Jewish historical awareness. Research into the history of photography of religious Jews in the Russian Empire thus affects the topic of Jewish nationalism, historiography, ethnography and the modem search for Jewish identity. It connects also to Russian Jewish art history, the primitivism of the Russian avant-garde and its sources in nineteenth century realism. The tradition of the photographs was strongly affected by the vicissitudes of Russian and Soviet history in the twentieth century, and almost as significantly by the modes and practices of scientific...

Der Bombenanschlag auf das Café Libman in Odessa am 17. Dezember 1905: Terrorismus als Gewaltgeschichte

Following the strike on the Hotel Bristol in Warsaw in November 1905, the Libman assault was the second cafe bombing in the Tsarist Empire. It was an act of "motiveless terror" commited by anarchist groups' escalating mass terrorism during the revolution of 1905 until 1907. The bombing attracted attention in the whole Empire because it was aimed directly at civilians: Women and children were harmed and injured. Because of the choice of the location this was not a 'collateral damage', but the attack was intended by the anarchist terrorists to kill "bourgeois capitalists". The analysis intends to clarify the violent impact of the terrorist deed. Violence in this specific context is perceived as a powerful ac deliberately hurting another person. Therefore the violent action itself is in the center of interest. The description of the eve...
