This volume is a selection of papers originally read in English at the fifth edition of the Inter... more This volume is a selection of papers originally read in English at the fifth edition of the International Conference on “Orient in Literature – Literature of the Orient” (OLLO), which took place from 28 March to 29 March 2019 at the Faculty of Languages of the Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Torun.
The present volume consists of 20 articles that cover a wide range of perspectives and approaches. This book is alphabetically arranged1, not least because of the disparity of material and the depth of individual analyses. The majority of the contributions deal with contemporary literature written from the mid-19th century to the present by writers from different countries and regions of Africa (Egypt, Nigeria and Somalia) and, above all, Asia (Kuwait, Qatar, Iranian Azerbaijan, India, China and Japan).

Der Terminus lässt sich auf die Marketingstrategie des Verlags Kawade shobô shinsha zurückführen. Kawade stellt als Sonderheft der hauseigenen Zeitschrift Bungei im August 1998 einen mittlerweile legendären Literaturführer zusammen und gibt ihm den Titel J-Bungaku: ‚90nendai bungaku mappu (J-Literatur: Eine Landkarte der Literatur der '90er Jahre). "J-Literatur " steht in diesem Fall nicht für junbungaku , die "reine Literatur" Japans, sondern für eine zeitgenössische japanische 1 Dieser Artikel stellt die überarbeitete und aktualisierte Version eines Beitrags dar, der in der Festschrift für Eduard Klopfenstein (" Wege der Japanologie ") unter dem Titel " Überlegungen zur zeitgenössischen japanischen Literatur " 2008 erstveröffentlicht wurde; ihm liegen seinerseits Vorträge und Studien der Jahre 2000 bis 2010 zugrunde. 2 Im Folgenden abgekürzt JBM.
