I study the relatively recent construction of the Isthmian nation of Panama as an ecodestination. Not until recently has tourism been important to Panama. Former President lermo Endara (L990-1994) declared tourisrlir a national priority that would contribute to the economic development; subsequent administrations (particularly the administration of sto P6rez Balladares, 1994-1999) focused on two particular types of tourism, namely herittourism and ecotourism. Heritage-based tourism exploits Panama's environmental and culdiversity, according all minorities (Afro-Antilleans and indigenous peoples in particular) :r symbolic capital than they previously enjoyed. Based on long-term ethnographic re-(Dermochelys coriacea), hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and green turtles fa midias)]a practiced rendered "traditional" by this ethnic group-as a direct result of in the Archipelago of Bocas del roro (province of Bocas del Toro), I address the ways in Afro-Antilleans are producing ecotourism destinations, and as a result, maintaining, remarginalizing, replacing, and reinventing behaviors, images, and beliefs associated with Ieritage. I specihcally focus on the transformations that have taken place among Afrolleans in regard to hunting and consumption of endangered species [particularly leatherback development in the region.

In my paper I offer an anthropological discussion of the role of the international tourism indust... more In my paper I offer an anthropological discussion of the role of the international tourism industry (including tourism operators, mediators, hosts and guests) in constructing destinations represented as perpetually joyful. Latin America and the Caribbean are prime examples of these constructions. They have been associated with intangible notions of perennial joy since colonial times. In postcolonial times, these representations continue to be reproduced fostering the manufacturing of identities, meanings, and practices connected to the tourism industry. I discuss how images ofperpetual happiness have been consciously used to attract tourists, and have successfully become part of the collective imagery of these regions.
