It reads Cervantes’s novela ejemplar “El licenciado Vidriera” as an allegory of disciplinarity and disciplinarization, which the novela treats as a matter inextricable from the sense of touch. This Cervantic, early-modern account of the primal relation between discipline and touch, the essay suggests, anticipates and allows us to see unexpected consequences to Derrida’s quite radical approach to disciplinarity.
