I am an Assistant Professor of Tourism at the Catholic University of Portugal and member of Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policy Research Unit (GOVCOPP) of the University of Aveiro, Portugal. I graduated from Geography and Political Sciences and earned my MA in Tourism Management from the University of Pécs, Hungary.
I completed my PhD in Tourism Management at the University of Aveiro, Portugal in the area of local governance.
Currently I teach various courses in Tourism Management including Tourism Geography, International Tourism Markets, ICT in Tourism, Tourism Distribution Channels, Spatial Planning and Research Methodologies.
My current research focuses on local governance and stakeholder relations in tourism, reflections of spirituality in the social media in the context of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes, the relationships of European identity formation and travel patterns, and the linkages between neuroscience and ICT in tourism.

For the first time in the history of the EU, the Lisbon Treaty, which entered into force in 2009,... more For the first time in the history of the EU, the Lisbon Treaty, which entered into force in 2009, established direct legal base for Community measures with supporting competence in the area of tourism (European Commission, 2007a). This new political framework may mark a major shift in the approach of the Community to tourism (Panyik and Anastasiadou, 2013). However, the prolonged financial crisis has led to a crisis of European identity and has fuelled Euro-sceptic tendencies and calls for re-nationalising policies across the region (Leonard et al., 2013; Henley, 2014). The potential of tourism in developing and sustaining a European identity has been argued in Commission documents (see for instance, CEC, 2001; 2003; 2006; 2007b; 2010; 2012). Historical evidence suggests that economic differences between populations induce ethnic tensions... more Historical evidence suggests that economic differences between populations induce ethnic tensions and national rivalry which, in turn, trigger mass migrations. The building of walls for protection of citizens from such external threats has been a common political choice, specifically that of great empires. In modern Western societies, built upon democratic principles, however, wall-building politics to shut down the mass influx of refugees from conflict regions is in fundamental contrast with the unalienable human rights of free movement and non-refoulement. In 2015, global forced displacement of people hit the highest record since the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) records began, with a total of 65.3 million people displaced from their homes by conflict and persecution (UNHCR, 2016). Objectives | The principal goal of this thesis is to advance knowledge on the relationships of ru... more Objectives | The principal goal of this thesis is to advance knowledge on the relationships of rural governance and integrated rural tourism (IRT). The main objectives of the research are three-fold: First, to explore the functional and dysfunctional mechanisms of rural governance exerted by the Local Action Groups (LAGs) of the European Union (EU) LEADER Programme, with particular attention on the extent of participation, empowerment and integration of actors. Second, to explore the strategic role and influences of rural governance shaping local tourism development. Third, to identify factors determining local policymakers’ support for tourism development, in particular their perceptions on, and attitudes towards, (i) participation in tourism development, (ii) tourism stakeholder integration, and (iii) the economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of tourism.

This paper aims to reflect on and reinterpret a recently coined concept, namely neurotourism, by ... more This paper aims to reflect on and reinterpret a recently coined concept, namely neurotourism, by applying the actual and future convergence of Information and Communications Technology and neuroscience to the area of tourism. Current interpretation of the concept suggests that neurotourism explores the neural mechanism underlying tourists’ behaviors and emotions in order to measure tourist satisfaction and revisiting intention1. As opposed to this conceptualisation we offer a different approach drawing on current advancements in the key underlying areas. In particular, we argue that neurotourism goes beyond being merely an applied neuroscience tool in tourism management.

Different trajectories taken up in 1989 by the former communist countries, the policies applied to them, both during the Cold War and after 1990 influenced the development of tourism in these countries. Based on these considerations, this paper offers a comparative view on an old and the new EU member states regarding foreign tourist arrivals: Portugal (joined the EU in 1986) and Romania (joined the EU in 2007). Governance is now generally accepted as a convenient conceptual term to characterise contemporary... more Governance is now generally accepted as a convenient conceptual term to characterise contemporary patterns of collective decision-making, particularly in the local public domain. However, there is a dearth of research into the attitudes of rural governance policy-makers towards tourism, despite the influence of the local rural policy arena on tourism development in rural areas. In order to fill this gap, this research aims to explore governance factors that influence rural decision-makers’ support for tourism. A cross-sectional field survey was designed and applied on the LEADER network in Hungary and analysed by multivariate data analysis methods. Results highlighted differences in the preferences of local planners regarding the dimensions of integrated rural tourism (IRT). In particular, findings suggest that local rural planners favour those qualities of IRT that enhance complementarity, sustainability, stakeholder and sectoral integration over the scale of IRT.

Content generated by tourists, travellers, professional travel bloggers and travel journalists wh... more Content generated by tourists, travellers, professional travel bloggers and travel journalists who post, comment and share information on social media channels is arguably the greatest digital challenge of destination branding today. The tourist-/traveller-generated content is likely to generate brand value if integrated into the destination branding strategy. There is, however, a lack of theoretical awareness and empirical research into the role of social media content in shaping destination brands. By taking Portugal as a case study, this exploratory research is aimed to show how content analysis can be used to identify and understand the way tourists and travellers perceive the country as a tourist destination. The application of this methodology on online material could contribute to a refined destination brand- ing initiative for Portugal by integrating user-generated and travel experts content into the strategy. It applies textual content analysis by using qualitative data analysis software (i.e. ATLAS.ti 7.0), within an interpretative paradigm, on tourism-oriented online publications in which the tourism potential of Por- tugal has been discussed. The findings highlight the tourist/traveller as an opinion maker with access to a plethora of information communication technologies to act as co-creators of brands. Therefore, it is wise to engage them and strategically integrate the content they generate into the whole destination branding effort.
