The information revolution associated with the development of the digital computer is the latest ... more The information revolution associated with the development of the digital computer is the latest revolution in communications technologies which enable a spatially extensive society to annihilate space with time, to extend control over larger areas, and to facilitate human experience with other places. A new economic geography is emerging in the information society around a spatial division of labor, between core locations where knowledge-based activities employing face-to-face communication cluster, and more peripheral locations where routine activities can be carried out cheaply, coordinated and monitored from the core. Spatial inequalities also exist on the location of and access to the infrastructure of information technology. The information society is having a contradictory impact on space. The relationship between the geographical propinquity of social actors and similarities in their situation with respect to other social actors is weakening. Whereas some places are becoming closer to one another, others remain distant in the spaces of telecommunication. The information society is undermining the cohesion of place, as individuals are less tied to place-based communities, but in other ways place is being reinforced. The information society is simultaneously contributing to both the empowerment of localities and the globalization of interactions, thereby reinforcing ‘glocalization.’

Theoretical Underpinnings of the Gravity Hypothesis Various theoretical rationalizations of the g... more Theoretical Underpinnings of the Gravity Hypothesis Various theoretical rationalizations of the gravity hypothesis for spatial interaction are examined. Deterministic utility theory cannot account for variability in individual behavior. Choice models based on Luce's axiom contain some inconsistencies. Random. utility theory provides a probabilistic formulation that is internally consistent, and also solves the aggregation problem. However, investigation reveals that, although this provides a theoretical justification for gravity-like behavior, the assumptions made are sufficiently unrealistic to cast doubt on the empirical validity of the gravity hypothesis. This paper attempts to provide a theoretical justification for the gravity model as a mathematical representation of human spatial interaction. In a general form, this hypothesis may be represented by tii = k.mi.q.fii, (1) where tii is interaction between i and i, mi is a function of the characteristics of i, q is a function of the attractiveness of j as a destination, and hi represents distance friction. In particular, it is hypothesized that the probabhty of a trip from i being attracted to j , pili is: Since the original statement of this hypothesis by Carey [ 5 ] , it has been the most widely used representation in geography for the movement of people [30], goods [19], or ideas [16]. However, a theoretical basis for this hypothesis has remained elusive, a fact that is particularly unfortunate given the central importance of interaction in theoretical human geography [ 351. Discussions of the spatiality of globalization have largely focused on placebased attributes that... more Discussions of the spatiality of globalization have largely focused on placebased attributes that fix globalization locally, on globalization as the construction of scale, and on networks as a distinctive feature of contemporary globalization. By contrast, position within the global economy is frequently regarded as anachronistic in a shrinking, networked world. A critical review of how place, scale, and networks are used as metaphors for the spatiality of globalization suggests that space/time still matters. Positionality (position in relational space/time within the global economy) is conceptualized as both shaping and shaped by the trajectories of globalization and as influencing the conditions of possibility of places in a globalizing world. The wormhole is invoked as a way of describing the concrete geographies of positionality and their non-Euclidean relationship to the Earth's surface. The inclusion of positionality challenges the simplicity of pro-and antiglobalization narratives and can change how we think about globalization and devise strategies to alter its trajectory.

Anthropogenic global heating is accelerating, with dramatic implications for the long-term prospe... more Anthropogenic global heating is accelerating, with dramatic implications for the long-term prospects of humans and many other species, underwritten by the logics of Euro-centric capitalism compounded by the colonialism, racism, patriarchy, and commodification of nature that has accompanied it. Nationalism is re-emerging, as are socio-cultural divisions within national societal assemblages. Global capitalism faces a series of crises stemming from the consequences of these relations. Critics are quick to argue that non-capitalist alternatives can advance socio-ecological justice, but how? Geography is ideally suited to making sense of this conjuncture, critiquing the processes facilitating its emergence, and realizing alternatives.
