Alongside work has no genres, so how does either the performer or the audience understand where moments of political agency might be opening up? How do audiences and artmakers collaborate in ways that keep the valuing going? The artmaking by duskin drum from the northwestern United States, currently working around the Pacific Rim, generates media that increasingly build performances that not only engage audiences in attending to the not-known of the materials in the performance ecology, but also embodying that not-known in performances that involve audience members from many quite distinct and disunified sociosituated locations. This is situated work in the social world of the alongside that embraces the possibility that emergent forms may move into the sociocultural—yet may not.

Caro Novella is a performance artist from Barcelona, currently living in California. She works on rehearsal strategies in two productions, parentesi and Resistencias Sonoras, both of which centre around performances of the somatic complexity of breast cancer. Here, the artmaker collaborates with people on a performativity that yields a performance that the activism may or may not choose to make public. The movement from (rest to form to embodiment generates a medium for the performer participants that is not only potentially an ongoing rehearsal, but also a performance of anecdotal (unpublished) knowing, and questions whether the collaborators are on the cusp of collectivity, directing the audience not to the affective but the effective politics of medicine, and how to invent strategies that would guard against this.

Documenting practice as research is a graphic attempt to carry the materiality of practice to an ... more Documenting practice as research is a graphic attempt to carry the materiality of practice to an audience, while articulating focuses on communicating the practice in language generic to academic research. The former holds a promise of opening the field to what has not been discursively recognized, by sociosituated people presencing unseen, unheard, obscured, erased ways of living and valuing. The latter is already on sociocultural ground. Which one we use is a critical choice: to articulate to a wider audience, or to engage through documenting with a usually much smaller group of people who will collaborate on being with a not-known materiality.

Sustaining Sociosituated Performativity with Collaboration

The work of performers is to experience their self changing and becoming different, and to engage... more The work of performers is to experience their self changing and becoming different, and to engage audiences in the embodiment of the change so that audience members open to the political potential of their own change. Making performance politically or making political performance will involve different strategies and structures, depending on the sociohistorical context in which the performer is working. Performers can develop practices that are more likely than not to generate a sociosituated positionality on the basis of alongside processes for becoming, knowing and valuing. These positionalities can drift into setting these alongside activities into a discursive field so they emerge into sociocultural articulation. Both are helpful, but without positionality, the set towards discourse can quickly become habit. To sustain the processual, performers need to foster practices of co-labouring rather than goal-oriented collectivity.
