Resumo: A instituição das Misericórdias, criada por D. Leonor no final do século XV, constituiu um modelo assistencial de grande sucesso e rápida difusão pelo território nacional e ilhas Atlânticas. Na primeira década do século XVI foi fundado em Ponta Delgada o hospital da Misericórdia com a sua capela anexa de São João Baptista, a qual seria integrada no novo templo construído no último terço da mesma centúria e dedicado ao Espírito Santo. Todo o conjunto desapareceu na primeira metade do século XIX, quase sem deixar vestígios, após um longo processo de ruína. Com base na documentação do arquivo da Misericórdia consultada e coligida pelo investigador Rodrigo Rodrigues, bem como em outras fontes coevas, foi possível compreender a importância central da igreja da Misericórdia no panorama da arquitectura quinhentista, não apenas da cidade de Ponta Delgada, mas ao nível regional, e descortinar os processos de encomenda, autoria, e obra desse edifício, permitindo ainda reconstituir, com relativa segurança, o plano, alçados e elementos decorativos presentes no interior do templo.

This paper discusses the touristic asset of the Azores Lake Gardens, analysing landscape transformations and testing the currently visual preferences of local people (C. Steinitz 1990; C. Castel-Branco et al. 2011). On the volcanic Islands of the Azores lake gardens built in the 19th century in the old craters of Furnas and Sete Cidades at S. Miguel Island had a naturally picturesque setting. Since then, they became cultural landscapes; encompassing extensive woodland gardens and romantic buildings (I. Albergaria 2000), these Lake Gardens have turned into iconic symbols of local identity becoming the subject of representations as part of the tourist attractions of the island. Albeit the high standards of environmental and landscape quality of the Azores, promoted in international publicity as the most sustainable tourist destination in the world (Global Sustainable Tourism Review, 2014), these two lakes are polluted due to an intensive dairy practice impact and became eutrophic. A long term goal of the project envisions to protect these lakes and landscapes to promote them through cultural landscape management and spatial planning within a sustainable tourism framework.

The aim of our study was to characterise and compare the richness and composition of endemic, native (non-endemic) and introduced arthropod assemblages of two Azorean Historic Gardens with contrasting plant species composition. We hypothesised that Faial Botanic Garden would hold higher arthropod diversity and abundance of native and endemic arthropod species due to its larger native plant community. Species were collected using several arthropod standardised techniques between April 2017 and June 2018. We used the alpha diversity metrics (Hill series) and the partitioning of total beta diversity (βtotal) into its replacement (βrepl) and richness (βrich) components, to analyse the adult and total arthropod community. The orders Araneae, Coleoptera and Hemiptera were also studied separately. In the last two decades, creative tourism has evolved as a burgeoning field, encompassing a wide range of concepts and practices, in different places around the world. From the very beginning, however, creative tourism has aimed to contribute to sustainable development and increased community wellbeing, as an alternative to mass cultural tourism. With this review article, our main objective is to identify and analyze a body of literature that specifically addresses creative tourism in islands, contributing to fill a gap in the knowledge since no reviews with this focus have yet been undertaken. Our aim is to provide a critical overview of creative tourism experiences at island destinations worldwide, addressing the plurality of empirical contexts and methodological approaches found in academic research.
