In designing physical objects, tangible models play an important part. Recent advances in augmented reality displays show new directions to support this field of prototyping. This paper focuses on the combination of rapid prototyping of physical objects and luminous tangible interfaces: digital imagery is projected on physical models. This yields a number of issues, including the design of the mixed-reality dialogue and the perceived quality of the augmented prototype. A system, called WARP (Workbench for Augmented Rapid Prototyping) is under development; the first implementation employs a turntable supports movement of the object, while a variety of materials and lighting conditions can be applied. Its evaluation yields a number of future issues, including hybrid modeling and optics and location tracking.

This paper presents a systematic discussion of the specifics of communication and work within a virtual development team, which is of crucial importance for competitiveness in the course of globalization. With advances in technology, work within virtual teams is gaining ever-greater importance. However, in this process, special knowledge and skills of virtual team members are a greater obstacle than technical equipment. Work within a virtual product development team requires intense communication, which is possible via videoconferencing. The contribution of this paper consists of a set of recommendations on how to develop necessary skills for effective communication and work in virtual development teams. The recommendations can be applied in both university and industrial environments. The paper is based on experiences from the international course on European Global Product Realisation that provided students with initial experiences in working within a global team. The authors believe that skills and technical equipment will need to be constantly supplemented and upgraded so that they will become practically independent of personal meetings (i.e. the distance between team members).

The concept of augmented prototyping offers potential means to support the design process. Although a collection of such systems have been presented in literature, an exhaustive discussion regarding the support scenarios and related design domains is lacking. This literature survey compares a number of existing augmented prototyping systems and discusses their applications. Most systems are limited to presentation or only modeling single aspects of an artifact. This reduces the impact of augmented prototyping on the design process. Second, this article presents an analysis of enabling technologies; including physical model making, input and output techniques. None of these are ideal; many restrict the interactivity by obstructing the direct manipulation of the physical object and by considerable set-up times. From this collection, a subset is selected that requires further study, specifically supporting three industrial design engineering domains: information appliances, automotive, and furniture design.

An important step in this line of research is to perform a series of experiments to quantify the effectiveness of the VR audio system as a function of operating parameters. Experiments are scheduled to determine the localization accuracy possible with the existing Mercator spatialization engine over a range of bandwidths. The results of this work should be helpful in determining the appropriate minimum sample rate for spatial audio. Experiments are also being designed to determine the effects of latency and hysteresis threshold width on a user's immersion in a virtual environment.
