Despite the global financial and economic crises and a sharp downturn in the domestic economy bet... more Despite the global financial and economic crises and a sharp downturn in the domestic economy between 2008 and 2009, Ireland managed to attract large inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2010. Inward FDI (IFDI) flows in 2010 were at a similar level to those in 2009, the second highest in Ireland's FDI history. However in 2011, there was a decline in such flows. While Ireland's economy has been greatly affected by the global crisis, Irish government initiatives have further fostered the country's attractiveness as an investment location for the world's firms. All indications are that Ireland's IFDI performance will continue to surpass that of most countries into the near future. Its trajectory has been notable both for its speed and scale and for its global dispersion. Since the early 2000s, Chinese outbound investment has grown rapidly from a very low base that predominately involved South–South flows, expanding into the global North. The idiosyncratic nature of Chinese investment has generated diverse responses over time from the countries of the developed world. The policy dilemmas that Chinese investment creates for the latter economies is manifest in their fragmented reactions and in the degree of contestation around policy responses. Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) from emerging economies has begun to increase significan... more Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) from emerging economies has begun to increase significantly and has been growing at a faster pace than Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from the developed world. This research seeks to assess the impact of Chinese acquisitions and their implications for the "Made in Italy" luxury sector and its firms. This paper presents a cross-case analysis of two Chinese acquisitions in order to provide some in-depth insights into the influences and the motives driving Chinese firms to invest in the luxury Made in Italy sector, the patterns and modes of the Chinese acquisitions as well as the competitive strategies and the distinctive challenges that both investors and acquired firms have to face. From the findings, it emerges that both the investor and the acquired firm need to overcome several key challenges to be mutual benefits from the acquisition.

The growing phenomenon of emerging-economy firms investing abroad, particularly in the developed ... more The growing phenomenon of emerging-economy firms investing abroad, particularly in the developed countries, calls for an in-depth study of their FDI motivations. This study builds upon several studies that suggest that capabilities-based approach is central to the theory of the MNE. Employing a case study approach, we examine the FDI motivations of Indian pharmaceutical firms in Ireland. Our analysis reveals that the FDI motivations of the firms are associated with their degree of internationalisation, and both are sequential as well as evolutionary in nature. Based on this study, we propose a four stage pyramid model of FDI motivations. The findings from this study have both theoretical and policy implications in relation to emerging-economy firms undertaking FDI.

More recently FDI has started to flow from the fast-growing emerging economies and is assuming a greater proportion of Global Outward FDI. This paper addresses these non-traditional sources of investment and the response from Europe to such investment. The fragmented nature of Europe’s response is explored and the impact of the on-going Eurozone crisis on that response is considered.

Many authors propose these frameworks to contribute to our understanding of how outsourcing relationships are conceived, operate and evolve. A meta-analysis of these frameworks was completed. The purpose of this chapter is to address the extent to which quality management is “culture-spec... more The purpose of this chapter is to address the extent to which quality management is “culture-specific.” The chapter presents the results of a survey administered across 21 countries that seeks to examine quality priorities and practices by adopting the Global Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Effectiveness (GLOBE) framework (House et al., 2004). Drawing on previous research (Vecchi & Brennan, 2011), data was collected in 2009 as part of the fifth iteration of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS). The methodology involved the use of a self-administered questionnaire to director/head of operations/manufacturing in best practice firms within the sector of firms classified by ISIC codes (rev.3.1) Divisions 28-35. Cultural variations across countries are considered a major factor affecting customers' readiness... more Cultural variations across countries are considered a major factor affecting customers' readiness to adopt, willingness to use, or evaluation of technology. Relevant contributions from marketing studies, computer science and international business are integrated into the literature of cross-cultural management and technology acceptance, and a conceptual model is developed. Drawing on a broader research project on RFID aimed at supporting intelligent business networking and innovative customer services, the development of the framework is informed by the authors' work in the preparation of a RFID based application at several established grocery retailers for short life products in Ireland and in Greece. From the findings of our exploratory study it emerges that low individualism and high uncertainty avoidance are conducive to greater customers' acceptance of new service technologies. Managerial implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Attracting Chinese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to Africa: Determinants and Policies - The Case of Guinea

This study examines the determinants and policies for attracting Chinese FDI to Africa by specifi... more This study examines the determinants and policies for attracting Chinese FDI to Africa by specifically analyzing major characteristics, trends and developments in the economic engagement between Guinea and China. Guinea's selection as the case study is justified by the country's experience of macroeconomic instability and social policy since independence. By considering mechanisms that play important roles in attracting FDI; market size, economic growth, employment, degree of trade openness and trade policy of the recipient country, the results show positive R-squared-a valid regression. However, all of these coefficients of determination are still not significant enough. The disparity to attract investment is assessed from geographical location, infrastructure, corruption levels, and income yields to implementation of the policies by the governments. It recommends policies at both national and bilateral levels in order to increase large Chinese FDI inflows towards Guinea and improve the forecast for macroeconomic and its constant development.

The growth of international business facilitates foreign direct investment (FDI) and is driven by... more The growth of international business facilitates foreign direct investment (FDI) and is driven by economic and technological factors. While foreign investors benefit by utilizing their assets and resources efficiently through FDI, the recipients benefit by acquiring technologies and by getting involved in international production and trade networks. It is now widely recognized that economic uncertainties compel a firm to look for markets in other geographical locations. For example, an unstable exchange rate, high interest rate, poor human capital, restrictions on trade and technological backwardness of the country all contribute to the increased cost of production in the home market. Because of the higher production cost, firms may engage in FDI to exploit location advantages of a country. This phenomenon is increasingly being observed in emerging markets, including India.
