Aesthetics of prosthetic devices is an emerging academic field, concerned with the visual attract... more Aesthetics of prosthetic devices is an emerging academic field, concerned with the visual attraction of a particularly intimate category of medical device. Our belief is that prosthetic users can gain psychological well-being when wearing prostheses perceived as aesthetically pleasing. This research focusses on exploring the concept of “concinnity” for below-knee prostheses, and develops current aesthetic theory in this area by considering elements and principles of visual design. The applicability of these to practice has been illustrated through two case studies of conceptual designs.

The ICR Grid is an evolved variant of 6-3-5 intended to better integrate information into the concept generation process. Unlike a conventional 6-3-5 process where participants continually sketch concepts, using the ICR Grid (the name derived from its Inform, Create, Reflect activities and structured, grid-like output) participants are additionally required to undertake information search tasks, use specific information items for concept development, and reflect on the merit of concepts as the session progresses. The results indicate that although the quantity of concepts was lower, the use of information had a positive effect in a number of areas, principally the quality and variety of output. Although grounded in the area of product development, this research is applicable to any organisation undertaking idea generation and problem solving. As well as providing insights on the transference of information to concepts, it holds additional interest for studies on the composition and use of digital libraries.

After describing the emergence and likely role of full-body interfaces with devices and systems, the importance of emotional reaction to the necessary movements and gestures is outlined. A gestural vocabulary for the control of a web page is then presented, along with a semantic differential questionnaire for its evaluation. An experiment is described where users undertook a series of web navigation tasks using the gestural vocabulary, then recorded their reaction to the experience. A number of insights were drawn on the context, precision, distinction, repetition and scale of gestures when used to control or activate a product. These insights will be of help in interaction design, and provide a basis for further development of the gestural vocabulary.

Even in the development of the most technologically complex products, systems and environments, i... more Even in the development of the most technologically complex products, systems and environments, it is now accepted that the role of the user must remain firmly in focus. It is not enough to fulfil functional requirements such as safety and performance, or to achieve technical excellence in manufacture. The emergence of user-centred design has been critical in shifting focus towards human needs in the design and development process. Inclusive design in particular has set out the importance of universal usability in the design of products, and this fundamental requirement has been addressed in a previous special issue of JED (Volume 21, Nos. 2-3, 2010). Broader user-based issues, however, require consideration of the emotional reaction of individuals to the tools, interfaces and spaces we interact with daily. The delivery of more personalised usage scenarios encompasses aspects of interaction design, psychology, culture and human factors to achieve satisfying, engaging and meaningful user experiences.

He graduated from the University of Glasgow with an Honors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to appointment at the University of Strathclyde in 1985 he spent periods with Barr and Stroud Ltd and Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd. He has been an investigator on research projects in the areas of design tools and techniques and computer supported working in design, design education and rapid prototyping, and is Operations Director of the newly created Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC).

This paper explores the issue of design information and its effect on conceptual design. After ou... more This paper explores the issue of design information and its effect on conceptual design. After outlining the nature of information and its role in product development, a number of taxonomies for concept design information are reviewed and most relevant information types highlighted. A new method for concept design that facilitates the searching and implementation of information in parallel with concept creation is then outlined. The performance of this method is analyzed with respect to the information sourced and used by student designer engineers when undertaking conceptual design work. On the basis of these results, a number of recommendations are made for the provision of information resources during concept design.

As well as playing an important role in social bonds and group dynamics, humour has a long associ... more As well as playing an important role in social bonds and group dynamics, humour has a long association with creativity and creative thinking. This study attempts to utilise this relationship in the context of design by enhancing brainstorming with the use of humour. The theories of Incongruity, Superiority and Relief are central in the creation of humour. This research hypothesises that these can be applied to enhance creative performance in brainstorming by inducing a humorous atmosphere through stimuli, and (2) applying jocular structure to the brainstorming process itself. A study of three brainstorming methods (classical, silent structured and video-enhanced) was undertaken, the results analysed using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, and possible influences of humour on levels of creativity evaluated. The results in this indicated that using a humorous stimulus did not have a positive effect, although there remains a strong case in the literature for further investigation. Structuring the brainstorming session did increase fluency and originality, and a number of insights for creative team formation and working are outlined.

With recent technological developments in motion capture there is an opportunity to redefine the ... more With recent technological developments in motion capture there is an opportunity to redefine the physical interactions we have with products, considering human needs in movement at the forefront rather than subservient to the machine. This paper reports on the exploration of emotional reaction to gestural interface design using Laban's Movement Analysis from the field of dance and drama. After outlining the current status of Gesture Controlled User Interfaces and why the use of Laban is appropriate to help understand the effects of movement, the results of a workshop on new interface design are presented. Teams were asked to re-imagine a number of product experiences that utilised appropriate Laban effort actions and to prototype and present these to the group. Several categories of devices, including direct manipulation, remote control and gesture recognition were identified. In aligning appropriate movements to device functionality, utilising culture and analogy and where necessary increasing complexity, the interfaces embody a number of concepts relating to gestural interface concepts.
