Il rapporto tra la visione teologica del mondo e quella scientifica moderna non si lascia generalizzare nei fin troppo facili stereotipi del perenne conflitto o della perenne armonia, i quali sono frutto più di opposte letture ideologiche dei fatti che di una loro attenta disamina. In realtà, il conflitto e l’armonia sono coesistiti, coesistono e sempre coesisteranno nella storia aperta dei rapporti tra queste due forme di sapere. Una storia quest’ultima che progressivamente avanza verso una loro chiara distinzione a riguardo dell’oggetto e del metodo di studio, e che si apre non verso la separazione netta e radicale ma verso la possibilità e la necessità di un dialogo.
Nelle pagine che seguono ci muoveremo su questa linea, mettendo in evidenza che, nel passato come ora, una lettura scientifica del reale non può mai sostituirsi ad una sua lettura teologica, e viceversa. L’una ha bisogno e deve rimandare all’altra se si vuole rispondere alle varie domande che sorgono quando ci poniamo davanti alla magnifica e, a volte, anche terrificante realtà del nostro universo.
Inizieremo con uno sguardo retrospettivo, in cui evidenzieremo come non ci sia mai stato un periodo in cui una data rivoluzione, nel modo scientifico di guardare al mondo inorganico ed organico, abbia reso superfluo ed abbia soppiantato il discorso teologico sul mondo. Continueremo poi, ai Capitoli II e III, trattando le questioni attuali del dibattito tra fisica, biologia e teologia, in cui emergeranno gli “spazi” e le possibilità per una lettura combinata, e su piani diversi, della realtà che ci circonda. Al Capitolo IV inizieremo a vedere come la visone scientifica del mondo e quella teologica possano interagire, qui in un modo problematico e, nel capitolo successivo, in un modo che a nostro avviso è più corretto e proficuo per ambedue. Concluderemo infine, al Capitolo VI, indicando come, e sopratutto in che modo, anche oggi si possa percorrere quella via che parte dalla conoscenza scientifica del mondo ed arriva all’idea di un Dio creatore. E questo, ripetiamolo, al fine da evidenziare come scienza moderna e teologia possano dialogare su questioni fondamentali e darci, ognuna rimanendo nel suo proprio campo di studio, una risposta alle domande fondamentali che sorgono quando ci poniamo di fronte a questo nostro universo.

Teilhard de Chardin made possible an interplay between scientific and metaphysical-theological knowledges resulting in a theology of science which is still viable for our present and future due to its features and architectural framework.
Although it is not immediately applicable, the concept of information can be implemented within the framework of Theilard’s thought in order to bring it up-to-date.
In the backdrop of post and trans humanism, Theilard’s contribution is still useful and operative as his picture of the spirituality of human action is in line with the modern vision of a world which continuously builds itself up and with the Christian vision of man as not endowed by complete autonomy but which depends on God, i.e. the God he has to be in tune with in order to make the right actions leading to the final union with Him. Anyway, human effort will just move us closer to this end that only God can grant.

Theology has always to be in contact with the contemporary culture if it wants to do its duty: to mediate the Divine Revelation to people of a specific time and of a specific place. While in the past the culture was exclusively humanistic, now it is undoubtedly also scientific. For this reason, to relate to the modern scientific culture is not something optional for theology but a necessity if it wants to enter into the lives of contemporary men and women. In particular, our culture is now strongly influenced by natural sciences and their view of the world, so it's necessary for theology to deal also with them if it wants to have any cultural influence. About the possible models of this necessary and searched relation between natural sciences and theology, it is normal inside catholic theology to refer to Teilhard de Chardin as a possible model and as an example to follow. But another important theologian of the twentieth century, Karl Rahner, has something to say on this topic. In particular, as we shall see, he proposes a model that focuses on the dialogue between two distinct aspects of our experience and between the two distinct form of knowledge that they originate-a dialogue between the esprit de géométrie and the esprit de finesse 1 that is necessary in the life of our contemporary society if we want to escape from the sterile contraposition that has characterized the European history from the French revolution onward. 1. Distinction but not separation between natural science and theology Karl Rahner put a very clear distinction between theology and natural science, but this distinction never arrives at an absolute separation 2. In fact, in his thought science and theology refer to two different kind of human experiences and form two different realms of human knowledge:-Natural science is the investigation of concrete individual phenomena and their interrelation in an " a posteriori " experience. Natural science reinforces, with its methods and instruments, the knowledge that we normally acquire from our experience of reality (it's " a posteriori "). It's a form of knowledge that is then thematic and can be classified in different ways.-Theology has instead to do with an " a priori " knowledge about the totality of reality and its ground: a knowledge that is always present in every human experience of the world, but never alone, and always together the single and concrete acts of willing and knowing that give it a content. It is a kind of " form " into which enter the different objects of our knowing and willing that, just for this, are known as a limited concretizations of a universal form and as a finite good. This is a knowledge that is not acquired and obtained, but that is already present and given with human existence (it's " a priori "): it's connected to the being, the " act of being " , of the human person. It is knowledge that is " unthematic " , non-classifiable, that doesn't concern particular objects but the awareness of the totality, the infinity, the eternity and the necessary, that is the condition of possibility of our experience of the singular, the finite, the mutable and the contingent. The object of theology is just this awareness, this " spiritual " dimension of the human person, because in it is present also God as its cause and condition of possibility. In this way it's clear that science and theology are two disciplines with two different objects 3 and so also with two different methods. From this follows that:-One discipline cannot contradict the other on essential points and so, in theory, every conflict is solvable.-We can have a real dialogue between these two disciplines, because every one is free to be itself and must not renounce its identity when confronting with the other.

Questo scritto vuole essere un’introduzione ad alcune tematiche teoricamente ed esistenzialmente fondamentali e che si trovano alla frontiera di discipline diverse. Si tratta di tematiche come quelle del fondamento ultimo della realtà esistente, del perché esista qualcosa invece che il nulla, del futuro ultimo della realtà esistente e dell’umanità, dell’esistenza o meno di una realtà chiamata “anima” o “mente”. Tematiche che sicuramente appartengono tutte ai grandi temi dell’esistenza e che sono state da sempre affrontate da filosofia e teologia.
Di esse oggi si interessano anche discipline scientifiche attente per loro natura a problemi fondamentali, come la fisica e la cosmologia, ma pure discipline legate alle tecnologie dell’informazione e alla biologia. Segno questo che una società e una cultura non possono disinteressarsi dei grandi temi dell’esistenza e che questi vengono affrontati con tutti gli strumenti concettuali che si hanno a disposizione.
Queste questioni fondamentali, vedremo, hanno infatti la caratteristica di essere trasversali a diverse discipline, le quali, nel trattarli, vedono però affievolirsi i confini che le contraddistinguono e che le delimitano e finiscono quindi inevitabilmente per entrare nel campo d’indagine, pur fatto con metodi diversi, di altre discipline.
La trattazione che faremo sarà quindi attenta a questo intreccio tra discipline che tradizionalmente si sono sempre occupate di questi temi, come la filosofia e la teologia, e discipline scientifiche moderne, come la fisica, la cosmologia, la biologia e le scienze dell’informazione. Anche quando si tratteranno questioni eminentemente filosofiche o teologiche, verrà sempre tenuto aperto un dialogo con le moderne discipline scientifiche.
Oltre all’intento di essere un’introduzione alla trattazione moderna e contemporanea dei grandi temi dell’esistenza, il presente scritto intende anche offrire in modo sintetico una panoramica sul pensiero di alcuni autori significativi, mettendoli a confronto, evidenziando analogie e differenze. La trattazione che si farà non sarà quindi generica, ma esplicitamente legata al pensiero di ben determinati autori la cui conoscenza è fondamentale a chi voglia riflettere su queste tematiche fondamentali.
Oltre ai due intenti sopraindicati, l’ultimo intento di questo scritto è la speranza di favorire attraverso l’approfondimento, il pensiero e la riflessione quel passo successivo che fa passare dalla “scienza” alla sapienza o, in altri termini, dalla semplice conoscenza alla capacità di operare una sintesi personale capace di orientare consapevolmente la propria vita.

Karl Rahner si occupa del tema della morte innanzitutto in un suo trattato dal titolo Sulla teologia della morte 1 e successivamente in una breve trattazione riassuntiva dal titolo Il morire cristiano 2. Nel suo Corso fondamentale sulla fede troviamo poi una sezione dedicata a «La teologia della morte e della risurrezione di Gesù» 3 che è anche utile per il nostro tema. Qui rileggeremo il suo pensiero nella prospettiva data dall' "avere la morte davanti agli occhi": un invito che troviamo anche nella Regola di S. Benedetto (RB 4,47) e che andremo a motivare utilizzando il pensiero rahneriano inserito nel contesto attuale. In particolare, vedremo che dobbiamo "avere la morte davanti agli occhi" (1) per non sfuggirla e affrontare nel modo giusto l'orrore, più o meno segreto, di fronte ad essa, (2) per agire prima che il tempo si compia e diventi eternità, (3) per cogliere i segni di eternità nel tempo.

Normative data stratified by three levels of age (16-59, 60-79, and 80-95 years) and three levels of education (0-8, 9-12, and 13-21 years) are presented for phonemic verbal fluency (FAS) and categorical verbal fluency (Animal Naming). The normative sample, aged 16 to 95 years, consisted of 1,300 cognitively intact individuals who resided in the community. Years of education ranged from 0 to 21. The total number of words in 1 minute for each of the letters F, A, and S was correlated r ϭ .52 with the number of animal names generated in 1 minute. Regression analyses showed that FAS was more sensitive to the effects of education (18.6% of the variance) than age (11.0% of the variance). The opposite relationship occurred for Animal Naming, where age accounted for 23.4% of the variance and education accounted only for 13.6%. Gender accounted for less than 1% of variance for FAS and Animal Naming. The clinical utility of these norms is discussed.

Abstract
The Homily of Jacob of Serug on Simeon the Stylite is analyzed from the perspective of  the Lives of Simeon, providing reflections on the  meaning of culture and postmodernism with comparisons between the Homily, the tradition, and the Autobiography of St. Ignatius of Loyola. It finds three axes upon which Simeon struggled from a developmental perspective in youth towards maturity: the paradoxical movement of down and up, that from fear to love in radical transparency, and the tension of presence and absence. Three corresponding values are postulated: discipline, transparency, and balance. H. Arendt, R. Guardini, S. Freud, P. Picasso, as well as Pope John Paul II, C. Geertz, B. Lonergan and K. Gergen, provide historical perspective. It cites Attention Deficit Disorder as emblematic of postmodernism suggesting that Monasticism recall the tradition of Jacob of Serug emphasizing presence, and its unique understanding and approach to word and work in its response to postmodernism.

La Homilía de Jacobo de Serug sobre Simeon el Estlita es analizada desde la perspective de las Vidas de Simeon, proporcionando reflexiones sobre el significado de cultura y postmodernismo con comparaciones entre la Homilía, la tradición, y la Autobiografía de San Ignacio de Loyola. Esto encuentra tres ejes con lo cual Simeon luchó desde una perspectiva del desarrollo en la juventud hacia la madurez: el movimiento paradójico desde abajo hacia arriba, aquello desde miedo hacia amor en transparencia radical, y la tensión de presencia y ausencia. Tres valores correspondientes son postulados: disciplina, transparencia, y equilibrio. H Arendt, R. Guardini, S. Freud. P. Picasso, así como Papa Juan Pablo II, C. Geertz, B. Lonergan y K. Gergen, proporcionan la perspectiva histórica. The qualities of Ignatian spirituality as a holistic spirituality are presented in this study of the psychology of religion. After preliminary definitions of religion and the characteristics of spirituality are provided, lgnatian spirituality is analyzed from the point of view of its holistic worldview and understanding of the human person. This spirituality is placed within a tradition that recognizes humility as self knowledge, as evidenced in other traditions such as monasticism in Europe and North America. The specific contribution of Ignatian spirituality is one in which personal discernment is given priority. It is recognized as further supported by a prayer style that is intensely holistic. The experiential aspects of lgnatian spirituality are presented as a response to the condition of postmodernism. Prologue On the centenary of Ernest Hemingway's birth, tribute was justly paid to the impact of his strong and crisp style of literature, if not to his ability as an artist to capture the particular spirit of an age. In his (1938) short story, "A Clean, Well-lighted Place," the younger waiter in a Spanish café complains to the older of the late hours continually forced on him by the last customer, an aged, drunk, deaf man who has recently attempted suicide. The older, more experienced waiter understands the suicide attempt as despair about nothing, a nothing that he fears with a fear that can be assuaged only by a clean, well lighted place. But imagine for a moment the faint glimmer of hope of one so isolated and tormented in the fires of the City of Dis, who yet hears the precise melody of his native dialect coming from someone passing through while still alive, in the flesh. "O Tosco!" is used only twice in the Commedia and reminds us of the Gospel when Peter is identified by his Galilean accent as one who must be one of Jesus' followers. The scene is poignant, nostalgic, because it prompts all to remember the most tender tones of the language, the accent, they heard first on their mother's knee before they could even respond. We know scientifically that babies, rather like foreigners, can understand a lot more passively than they can express actively for a long time. That language is so very close to us; it seems to project who we are and how we are in the world. Translating texts into a new language is a daunting enterprise if for no other reason than the impossible task of approaching that homespun linguistic space and having to face the painful truth that our efforts will inevitably result in an approximation. Ah, but then, we can help each other. I will present a couple of pointers instead of a full blown theory of translation. There are principles that can help keep us on guard when we are reading a translation. My first example comes from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Since it was written in the Sixteenth Century it presents a few challenges, as does any other text of any antiquity. Two important points relate to first, the goal of the Exercises and, second, the role and nature of the creation as we find ourselves in it. This heading by Ignatius defines the role of the Exercises:
