Background. Electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) is an excellent choice for people with residual hearing in low frequencies but not high frequencies and who derive insufficient benefit from hearing aids. For EAS to be effective, subjects' residual hearing must be preserved during cochlear implant (CI) surgery. Methods. We implanted 6 subjects with a CI. We used a special surgical technique and an electrode designed to be atraumatic. Subjects' rates of residual hearing preservation were measured 3 times postoperatively, lastly after at least a year of implant experience. Subjects' aided speech perception was tested pre-and postoperatively with a sentence test in quiet. Subjects' subjective responses assessed after a year of EAS or CI experience. Results. 4 subjects had total or partial residual hearing preservation; 2 subjects had total residual hearing loss. All subjects' hearing and speech perception benefited from cochlear implantation. CI diminished or eliminated tinnitus in all 4 subjects who had it preoperatively. 5 subjects reported great satisfaction with their new device. Conclusions. When we have more experience with our surgical technique we are confident we will be able to report increased rates of residual hearing preservation. Hopefully, our study will raise the profile of EAS in Brazil and Latin/South America.

Relational ties are valuable resources that can generate substantial advantages for firms. Multiple studies show that relational ties enhance firm performance, but whether and how innovation intervenes in this process is largely unknown. This study examines how relational ties affect firm performance via two types of innovation. Drawing on the relational ties literature and exploration/exploitation literature, we differentiate between two types of ties (business ties versus political ties) and investigate how innovation (exploration versus exploitation) mediates relational ties and firm performance in two distinct ways. Survey data from China's semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries, both innovation-oriented industries, suggests that firms' business ties with buyers, suppliers, and competitors are more related to exploratory innovation, while their political ties with government officials are more related to exploitative innovation. Interestingly, competitive intensity demonstrates distinct moderating effects on both of these pathways.

This paper focuses on The Art of the Yellow Springs: Macro Perspectives on Ancient Chinese Tombs written by Professor Wu Hung, deeply analyzing the spatial narrative and meaning - generation mechanisms of ancient Chinese tombs. By exploring aspects such as the absence and symbolic presence of the tomb owner, the creative logics of "similarity" and "dissimilarity" in funerary objects and tomb figurines, and the spatio - temporal symbolism of the "half-opened door" image, it reveals how tombs, through the mutual penetration of spatiality, materiality, and temporality, transform from closed "tombs" into "cosmos" containing history, memory, and belief. The research finds that tombs are not merely physical spaces but a concentrated reflection of the ancient people's views on the universe, life and death, etc., and their meaning-generation process is closely linked to social and cultural practices. This book not only provides a new perspective for understanding ancient Chinese tomb art but also offers methodological references for art history writing when dealing with invisible subjects, prompting people to rethink the connotations of key elements such as the real and the virtual, material, and time - space in art history research.

Developing-world rural migrants provide crucial labor for global supply chains and economic growth in their native countries. Yet their high turnover engenders considerable organizational costs and disruptions threatening those contributions. Organizational scholars thus strive to understand why these workers quit, often applying turnover models and findings predominantly derived from the United States, Canada, England or Australia (UCEA). Predominant applications of dominant turnover theories however provide limited insight into why developing-world migrants quit given that they significantly differ from UCEA workforces in culture, precarious employment and rural-to-urban migration. Based on multi-phase, multi-source and multi-level survey data of 173 Chinese migrants working in a construction group, this study adopts an identity strain perspective to clarify why they quit. Building on person-supervisor fit and signaling theory, this study explores the joint effects (i.e., congruence) of supervisor and subordinate proactive personality on subordinate voice behavior through subordinate perceived psychological safety. We examined our hypotheses using cross-level polynomial regressions and response surface analyses. The results indicated that supervisor-subordinate congruence in proactive personality led to higher levels of subordinate perceived psychological safety. Additionally, subordinates in the congruent dyads with high proactive personalities perceived higher levels of psychological safety than those in the congruent dyads with low proactive personalities. Furthermore, supervisor-subordinate congruence in proactive personality had an indirect effect on voice via subordinate perceived psychological safety. Theoretical implications for proactive personality, voice, and person-supervisor fit literatures are discussed. This study highlights that organizations should focus more on creating conditions, perhaps through supervisor-focused changes, that engender psychological safety as opposed to focusing attention exclusively on proactive traits exhibited by employees.

This study adopts an identity strain perspective to understand migrant workers' turnover. We found that migrant workers' identity strain had a positive impact on turnover, and supervisory support climate, serving as a type of job resource, buffered this effect. The interacting effects of identity strain and supervisory support climate on turnover was mediated by adjustment.

Prior work suggests that follower and leader risk orientation is positively associated with follower creativity. We suggest that this view is oversimplified and propose that follower creativity can be stimulated when leader and follower have diverging risk orientations. We, therefore, apply a configurational approach to creativity, evaluating varying combinations of leader and follower risk orientation on follower creativity. Across two field studies, we demonstrate that (a) follower creativity increases as leaders’ and followers’ risk orientations become more discrepant (i.e., incongruent); (b) follower creativity is higher when leader–follower dyads are congruent at moderate levels of risk orientation compared to congruence at the extremes (i.e., low and high levels); (c) follower‐experienced intellectual stimulation mediates the relationship between leader–follower risk orientation incongruence and congruence and follower creativity; and (d) that leader authority openness moderat...

We consider two alternative tests to the Higher Criticism test of Donoho and Jin [Ann. Statist. 32 (2004) 962-994] for high-dimensional means under the sparsity of the nonzero means for sub-Gaussian distributed data with unknown column-wise dependence. The two alternative test statistics are constructed by first thresholding L 1 and L 2 statistics based on the sample means, respectively, followed by maximizing over a range of thresholding levels to make the tests adaptive to the unknown signal strength and sparsity. The two alternative tests can attain the same detection boundary of the Higher Criticism test in [Ann. Statist. 32 (2004) which was established for uncorrelated Gaussian data. It is demonstrated that the maximal L 2 -thresholding test is at least as powerful as the maximal L 1 -thresholding test, and both the maximal L 2 and L 1 -thresholding tests are at least as powerful as the Higher Criticism test.

The most popular multiple testing procedures are stepwise procedures based on P -values for individual test statistics. Included among these are the false discovery rate (FDR) controlling procedures of Benjamini-Hochberg [J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 57 (1995) 289-300] and their offsprings. Even for models that entail dependent data, P -values based on marginal distributions are used. Unlike such methods, the new method takes dependency into account at all stages. Furthermore, the P -value procedures often lack an intuitive convexity property, which is needed for admissibility. Still further, the new methodology is computationally feasible. If the number of tests is large and the proportion of true alternatives is less than say 25 percent, simulations demonstrate a clear preference for the new methodology. Applications are detailed for models such as testing treatments against control (or any intraclass correlation model), testing for change points and testing means when correlation is successive.
