
Sam Martin
I am a Digital Sociologist and Digital Analytics Consultant specialising in research at the intersection of Digital Health and Data Science.
I am currently consult for the University of Oxford, at the Ethox Centre (Big Data Institute), where I work with an international team of researchers on topics of Vaccine Hesitancy among Healthcare Workers and Misinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic. I am also a a Senior Research Fellow at the Rapid Research Evaluation and Appraisal Lab at University College London, working on rapid research and mixed methods approaches to studying the impact of Covid-19 on public health services.
I am also a part-time research fellow at the Alan Turing Institute, working on the temporal complexities of social network activity in relation to Covid-19. I previously worked at LSHTM as a Digital Analytics Lead and Research Fellow (Media Monitoring) for the Vaccine Confidence Project™ (2019-2020).
Prior to joining the team, I gained my PhD in Digital Health, Social Media Analytics and Coeliac Disease at the University of Warwick, as well as an MSc in Digital Sociology (Distinction) from the University of Goldsmiths, and an undergraduate Law degree from the University of Oxford (Merton College).
Teaching:
My research and teaching activities focus on the use of advanced digital social research methods to explore how social media engages with cultural and sociological issues.
Research
My research critically analyses and visualises text and image data output from digital health apps and social media. I have designed digital health research apps and games for visualising the embodiment of chronic illness and have investigated the use of 3D printing techniques to create badges that reflect the digital selfhood of users discussing chronic illness.
