This study focused on managing in different types of business net. It had four objectives. Firstl... more This study focused on managing in different types of business net. It had four objectives. Firstly, it aimed to develop a conceptual framework to categorize different types of business net. The classification scheme was used to provide a number of suggestions in regard to the managerial capabilities that were assumed to be required in managing different type of net. This framework was developed by utilizing primarily three research traditions: Industrial Network Approach, Strategic Value Net Approach and Resource-based View. Secondly, the study examined the validity of the value creation framework through a comparative case study containing the postulated three key ideal types of business net (stable, incremental and emerging). Thirdly, it identified the company level managerial capabilities employed in the case nets. Finally, it analysed and compared the value system characteristics and the managerial capabilities in these different types of net. The empirical part was based on qualitative comparative case analysis and it included ten case examples. The study contained several contributions. Firstly, it proposed the conceptual framework to categorize different types of net. Secondly, it indicated that the value system characteristics identified in the cases provided supportive evidence for the suggested framework. Thirdly, it also revealed examples of such value system characteristics and managerial capabilities that the framework did not originally contain. These results showed that all the case nets were hybrid forms having both characteristics of efficiency and effectiveness, stability, and emergence. The hybrid form refers to the nets having many value system characteristics – not only efficiency or effectiveness, as was assumed based on the literature review. The emphasis of these characteristics seems to fluctuate according to the goal of the net. In addition, in emergence stability and efficiency were more significant than was expected on the basis of the preconceptualization. Fourthly, the study suggested a revised framework with modifications based on the findings of the empirical study. Finally, the study identified different phases in the development of nets in all the studied cases, which emphasized the relevance of the time aspect

IVe take the focal perspective of a software vendor and classify its relationships with actors into three distinctive types bv the function in their valuecreating network. I he study is guided bv the premise that some relationships related lo supply, distribution or supporting the business are more important than others, and companies thrive to focus on fewer relationships with greater outcomes. In our analysis, based on a c/ualitative case studv approach, we focus on the cognitive and structural aspects of relationships as a basis for social capital creating specific relational value lo actors. Our empirical findings indicate that these aspects varv svstematicallv bv the types oj relationships with actors and networks, thus enabling us lo provide some theoretical and managerial conclusions on the management of.sojhvare companies.

Designing a Repeatable Collaboration Method for Setting Up Emerging Value Systems for New Technology Fields

These days even large multinational enterprises must collaborate with other companies when creati... more These days even large multinational enterprises must collaborate with other companies when creating and mobilizing new technology applications. They might not possess all the capabilities needed, or they might even find it economically unfeasible to internally master all the relevant value activities in a traditional value chain. Thus, new technology business fields are increasingly being formed by networked value systems. However, there are no established management practices on how to instigate and nurture emerging value systems. In this design science research, we will develop and test a repeatable collaboration method for setting up an emerging value system in a new technology field. We will apply collaboration engineering as the design approach and group support systems as a technique when developing our process artifact. The agenda setting is performed collaboratively by finding out the major barriers facing the birth of a new field, and the actions needed to overcome those barriers. We will apply our method to mobile marketing. We found that the use of a carefully designed ICT-enabled collaboration method can facilitate the stakeholders in an emerging field to work together and provide initiatives toward the creation of a new value system. The developed collaboration method is also repeatable and easily transferable to emerging technology-based businesses other than mobile marketing.

Nets are seen to offer firms collective benefits beyond those of a single firm or market transaction. We propose that the types of knowledge and learning required in the management of different types of business net are dependent on the value creation characteristics of the net types. Based on this we suggest a classification of three generic net types – 'current business nets', 'business renewal nets', and 'emerging new business nets' – and argue that they pose different conditions for management in nets. Using this framework and integrating notions from the industrial network approach, strategic management and dynamic capabilities view, and organizational learning we make a number of observations and propositions about the role of knowledge and learning in the three types of business net. The paper contributes to the emerging theory of network management.

Design/methodology/approach – Uses the Management Capability Framework to break down supply net management into different modes and identify capabilities required in them. Findings – Reveals that the supply activity of companies increasingly takes place in intentionally developed strategic networks called supply nets. These networks pose distinctive challenges for supply chain management. Identifies four diverse but simultaneously extant modes of management in the supply net context, and discusses the key managerial capabilities in each mode. Originality/value – Provides a conceptual framework to fulfill the identified need to understand management in the network management context. This paper enables researchers and business practitioners to identify the strategic focus and key capabilities required in managing supply nets.

A Repeatable Collaboration Process for Developing a Road Map for Emerging New Technology Business: Case Mobile Marketing

The unique and little practiced characteristics of mobile as a marketing medium create a need to ... more The unique and little practiced characteristics of mobile as a marketing medium create a need to set up an action and research agenda regularly to foster the development of the mobile marketing value system. Numerous stakeholders take part in the network to deliver the mobile services. Strengthening their inter-organizational relationships is critical for the emerging value system to evolve. Our paper employs Collaboration Engineering to address this undertaking by designing a standard process that actors in mobile marketing, as well as in other emerging new technology businesses, can use to collaboratively develop a road map for the future. The first field test of this process was conducted in London in connection with the Mobile Marketing Summit '04 organized by Nokia. The results are promising. Together with senior management of 25 leading brand marketers and advertising agencies we were able to outline an extensive road map while strengthening the network formation in the field.
