Pp. 360. 243 ills. $60 hardcover. $45 paper J Piranesi was an engraver, architect, antiquities restorer and dealer, draftsman, archaeologist, furniture and fireplace designer, publisher, author, and bookseller. This astonishing range of interests makes him difficult to classify or comprehend. Piranesi etched more than one thousand copper plates during his lifetime and claimed that he could pull four thousand impressions from each plate. His plates continued to be printed after his death in 1778 right up to the start of World War II, producing increasingly faded prints. As a quick glance at eBay reveals, there are probably more "Piranesi" prints in existence than those by any other artist.
