
David R Marshall
David R. Marshall is Principal Fellow Emeritus, Art History, School of Culture and Communication, The University of Melbourne. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and Honorary Research Fellow, British School at Rome. He was founder and editor of Melbourne Art Journal.
His research interests centre on view-painting (especially Giovanni Paolo Panini), the art, architecture and urbanism of the City of Rome in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and New Traditional architecture. Publications include (with Lisa Beaven and other contributors), Emerging from Darkness: Faith, Emotion and the Body in the Baroque, Hamilton (Victoria, Australia), 2023; Rediscovering a baroque villa in Rome: Cardinal Patrizi and the villa Patrizi 1715-1909; (with Susan Russell and Karin Wolfe, eds.), Roma Britannica: Britain and Rome in the Eighteenth Century (2011); (ed.) Art, Site and Spectacle: Studies in European Visual Culture (ed), 2007; Viviano Codazzi and the Baroque Architectural Fantasy (1993). At Melbourne University he taught courses on Renaissance and Baroque Art, Eighteenth Century Art, Garden History, Theories and Methods of Art History, and Attribution, Expertise and Connoisseurship.
