Urmila Shrawankar completed her Ph.D. degree in Computer Sci & Engg from SGB Amravati University, India and M.Tech. degree in Computer Sci & Engg from RTM Nagpur university, India. She is presently working as Professor in CSE Dept, G H Raisoni College of Engineering, Nagpur, RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur (MS) India. Her Area of interest includes Advanced Operating Systems, High performance Computing, Distributed and Parallel Computing, Cloud Computing, Algorithms, Assistive Technology etc. She has many research publications in book chapters, refereed international journals and conferences in her account. She is a receiptant of DST Travel Grant From Govt. of India, Ministry of Science & Technology for attending Springer Publication -International Conference at Manchester, UK, Year 2010 and UGC Project Grant as a Principal Investigator. She has filed 08 National patents. She is a reviewer of many refereed International journals and has worked as a core organizing committee member, Technical program committee member and Session Chair at many international conferences. She is Member of various Professional bodies like IEEE, ACM, CSI, ISTE, IE. Under her guidance 25 UG-BE(CSE) project groups, 60 PG-M.Tech (CSE) project scholars and 03 PhD Research scholars are working and completed their Engineering Degree.

Finger spelling in air helps user to operate a computer in order to make human interaction easier... more Finger spelling in air helps user to operate a computer in order to make human interaction easier and faster than keyboard and touch screen. This article presents a real-time video based system which recognizes the English alphabets and words written in air using finger movements only. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is used for recognition which is trained using more than 500 various shapes and styles of all alphabets. This system works with different light situations and adapts automatically to various changing conditions; and gives a natural way of communicating where no extra hardware is used other than system camera and a bright color tape. Also, this system does not restrict writing speed and color of tape. Overall, this system achieves an average accuracy rate of character recognition for all alphabets of 94.074%. It is concluded that this system is very useful for communication with deaf and dumb people.

Here, I am trying to introduce a new interface i.e. speech for information retrieval. The goal of this project is to develop a speech interface that can search and read the required information from the database effectively, efficiently and more friendly. This tool will be highly useful to blind people, they will able to demand the information to the computer by giving voice command/s (keyword) through microphone and listen the required information using speaker or headphones.

Managing Buffer Cache by Block Access Pattern

As buffer cache is used to overcome the speed gap between processor and storage devices, performa... more As buffer cache is used to overcome the speed gap between processor and storage devices, performance of buffer cache is a deciding factor in verifying the system performance. Need of improved buffer cache hit ratio and inabilities of the Least Recent Used replacement algorithm inspire the development of the proposed algorithm. Data reuse and program locality are the basis for determining the cache performance. The proposed algorithm determines the temporal locality by detecting the access patterns in the program context from which the I/O request are issued, identified by the program counter signature, and the files to which the I/O request are addressed. For accurate pattern detection and enhanced cache performance re-reference behavior exploited in the cache block are associated with unique signature. Use of multiple caching policies is supported by the proposed algorithm so that the cache under that pattern can be best utilized.

This paper describes a model that uses Part of Speech tagger and three categories for word sense disambiguation (WSD). Human Computer Interaction is very needful to improve interactions between users and computers. For this, the Supervised and Unsupervised methods are combined. The WSD algorithm is used to find the efficient and accurate sense of a word based on domain information. The accuracy of this work is evaluated with the aim of finding best suitable domain of word.

Parameters Optimization for Improving ASR Performance in Adverse Real World Noisy Environmental Conditions

From the existing research it has been observed that many techniques and methodologies are availa... more From the existing research it has been observed that many techniques and methodologies are available for performing every step of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system, but the performance (Minimization of Word Error Recognition-WER and Maximization of Word Accuracy Rate-WAR) of the methodology is not dependent on the only technique applied in that method. The research work indicates that, performance mainly depends on the category of the noise, the level of the noise and the variable size of the window, frame, frame overlap etc is considered in the existing methods. The main aim of the work presented in this paper is to use variable size of parameters like window size, frame size and frame overlap percentage to observe the performance of algorithms for various categories of noise with different levels and also train the system for all size of parameters and category of real world noisy environment to improve the performance of the speech recognition system. This paper presents the results of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and Accuracy test by applying variable size of parameters. It is observed that, it is really very hard to evaluate test results and decide parameter size for ASR performance improvement for its resultant optimization. Hence, this study further suggests the feasible and optimum parameter size using Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) for enhancing resultant accuracy in adverse real world noisy environmental conditions. This work will be helpful to give discriminative training of ubiquitous ASR system for better Human Computer Interaction (HCI).

The purpose of these tasks is to further improve man-machine communication. ASR systems exhibit unacceptable degradations in performance when the acoustical environments used for training and testing the system are not the same. The goal of this research is to increase the robustness of the speech recognition systems with respect to changes in the environment. A system can be labeled as environmentindependent if the recognition accuracy for a new environment is the same or higher than that obtained when the system is retrained for that environment. Attaining such performance is the dream of the researchers. This paper elaborates some of the difficulties with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). These difficulties are classified into Speakers characteristics and environmental conditions, and tried to suggest some techniques to compensate variations in speech signal. This paper focuses on the robustness with respect to speakers' variations and changes in the acoustical environment. We discussed several different external factors that change the environment and physiological differences that affect the performance of a speech recognition system followed by techniques that are helpful to design a robust ASR system.

Since last decade most of the transactions are online viz. Online banking applications, database queries and real time applications. Time synchronization in a distributed system is important because time based queries can be answered only if all the distributed system has a common notion of time. In distributed system the clocks do not remain well synchronized without periodic synchronization. To maintain the global time the clocks of the nodes must resynchronized periodically. The aim of this paper is to study existing time synchronization approaches and analyze the need of a new class of clock synchronization protocol that is scalable, topology independent, fast convergence, and less application dependent in a distributed environment. The review`s presented in this paper are on the basis of different techniques for clock synchronization proposed by various researchers. This work will help in selecting appropriate methods of clock synchronization in a distributed environment.

It is being used in the field of academics and industry. It enables to put multiple operating systems under same set up. Instead of rebooting, it is possible to switch to different operating system virtually. Therefore, there is much focus on optimizing the virtual machine performance. In virtualized environment, each of the guest operating systems has virtual disk share of the underlying physical disk. In such a situation there is lack of coordination between the layers of system. Therefore, it is probable that different disk scheduling algorithms conflict with each other. This paper proposes an approach toward the performance improvement of disk scheduling in virtualized environment by future request arrival prediction. A comparative study of various disk scheduling performance improvement algorithms is provided.

A Methodology for Buffer Cache Block Access Pattern based Policy Selection

Buffer cache overcomes the speed delays associated with the memory accesses. The technique in thi... more Buffer cache overcomes the speed delays associated with the memory accesses. The technique in this paper firstly focuses on, identifying the access patterns of cache blocks referenced by the by I/O operations of the application. Reference regularities such as sequential, looping exhibited in the blocks references are detected by the presented technique. Secondly the buffer cache is partitioned according to the total number of identified patterns for holding the blocks belonging to the respective patterns. Block allocation among the partitions is managed by the marginal gain method. Thirdly based on the patterns identified, selection is made among the multiple replacement policies that is to be applied, to best utilize the cache under that pattern. Comparative study with LRU and other replacement algorithm shows that the technique improves the buffer cache hit ratio and reducing the total time elapsed in performing the I/O operation, thereby enhancing overall performance of the applications.
