STUCK (Manuscript received April 1, 1976) A sample function from one of two stable, stationary, independent- increment processes is observed for a ﬁnite time interval. For diﬁering location, characteristic index, skewness, or scale, the probabilities measures induced by the process under either hypothesis are found to be mutually orthogonal. By suitably modifying the Levy measure associated with each probability measure, continuous-time tests for differing characteristic indices, skewness, or scale parameters can be posed as nonsingular detec- tion problems; distinguishing location remains a singular detection problem. The present work explores the extent and patterns of innovation in two mountainous areas of Greec... more The present work explores the extent and patterns of innovation in two mountainous areas of Greece and its effect on business performance. Innovative activity is categorized in fives classes of product and market innovation. Both areas are characterized by extreme rurality and peripherality but the one is more accessible by the market of two urban agglomerations while the other one is very remote. Empirical evidence is drawn from a survey of 100 enterprises in the manufacturing and service sectors. Product and market innovation is facilitated by the operation of various types of business networks and influenced by a range of entrepreneurial and enterprise specific characteristics. In turn, innovative activity has an impact on conventional measures of business performance. Policy implications for a territorially specific business innovation support strategy are drawn. Certain multimedia and voice services, such as VoIP, IPTV, etc., are significantly delay sensitiv... more Certain multimedia and voice services, such as VoIP, IPTV, etc., are significantly delay sensitive and their performance is influenced by the overall transmission delay and its variance. One of the most common solutions used in access networks are xDSL lines, especially ADSL2+ or VDSL2. Although these subscriber lines also use packet communication, there are several differences and mechanisms, which influence their resulting delay. Their delay characteristics are also dependent on the individual settings of each xDSL provider, therefore we decided to investigate this area for typical commercially available lines in Czech Republic. Based on the measured values and experiments with real ADSL2+ lines we also developed a potential modeling method, which is presented in this article as well. The parameters for packet jitter based on the generalized Pareto distribution were modeled.

When a log likelihood ratio test is used to discriminate between the two sets of parameters, we give bounds on the probability of choosing an incorrect hypothesis, and on the total probability of error, for both discrete and continuous time parameter, and discrete and continuous state space. The asymptotic behavior of the bounds is examined as the observation interval becomes infinite.

B... more Electro-optical sensors measure energy transmitted by lasers spaced about a region's periphery. Both the lasers and sensors are tuned to infrared frequencies at which air pollutants strongly absorb electromagnetic energy. The sensor measurements are processed using an algorithm derived from the Radon transform. The result is an estimate of air pollutant density throughout the region that has been smoothed to minimize effects due to background sunlight fluctuations, laser fading and phase scintillation, and intrinsic sensor noise. Good agreement is found between a theoretical analysis of performance limitations and computer simulation results

ABSTRACT A new commutative diagram summarizing some of the mathematical structure of deterministi... more ABSTRACT A new commutative diagram summarizing some of the mathematical structure of deterministic classical electrodynamics is presented. The diagram clearly delineates the fundamentally different roles played by the space-time differentiable manifold (vis a` vis exterior calculus) and by matter of vacuum (vis a` vis the constitutive relations for dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability) in electrodynamics. Two different elliptic operators, called here the Laplace-Beltrami and Laplace-Poisson operators, arise naturally from this formulation. Some properties of eigenfunctions of elliptic operators with compact support are briefly reviewed with regard to potential application in numerical analysis of practical problems in electrodynamics. The action of the so-called inhomogeneous Lorentz group on electrodynamical functions is described. Several scalar inner products which remain invariant under the action of this group are seen to arise naturally from the mathematical structure discussed here. By using some of these invariant quantities, a new variational approach to deterministic classical electrodynamics is then developed. First, a new Lagrangian function is presented and used to derive the Euler-Lagrange equations for electrodynamics. Second, a series of new Hamiltonian functions are presented and used to derive the Hamiltonian equations for electrodynamics. All results are illustrated by a detailed examination of the electrodynamical structure of a model for an inhomogeneous nonisotropic medium.

The attitude control is achieved by torques generated by sunlight striking a set of lightweight reflective surfaces called solar sails. The design is studied via analysis as well as a computer simulation of the attitude control dynamics. A nominal trajectory for the satellite attitude is defined, and a set of dynamical equations are derived that are linearized about this nominal trajectory. A sensor scheme is proposed for sensing attitude, and this is combined with the linearized analysis to determine the overall dynamical system behavior for the attitude control system. A sensitivity analysis confirms that the design is robust to unknown disturbance torques and initial conditions far from nominal.

Messages are generated either according to so called finite source or infinite source arrival statistics. The message lengths are independent identically distributed random variables. Two policies for arbitrating contention are compared: polling, and carrier sense collision detection. The maximum mean throughput rate and mean message delay is calculated as a function of model parameters.

The likelihood-ratio test for discriminating between these two distributions is found explicitly and performance limitations are determined. When the two distributions differ only in location, the likelihood-ratio test is sensitive to whether the distribution is nongaussian stable {0 < a < 2) when nonlinear soft limiting of large deviations is used, or gaussian stable (a = 2) when linear processing is used. When the two distributions differ only in scale, the likelihood-ratio lest is sensitive to whether 0 < a < 2 when nonlinear soft limiting of large deviations is used, or gaussian (a = 2) when a chi-squared test is used. The analysis of the two remaining cases, distinguishing between one of two characteristic indices, and between one of two skeivness parameters, parallels the analysis of distinguishing between one of two scale parameters and is only touched upon briefly.

ABSTRACT A research program into three aspects of space satellite dynamics was carried out. First... more ABSTRACT A research program into three aspects of space satellite dynamics was carried out. First, a four-dimensional space-time formulation of Newtonian mechanics is developed. This theory allows a new physical interpretation of the conservation theorems of mechanics first derived rigorously by Noether. Second, a new concept for estimating the three angles which specify the orientation in space of a rigid body is presented. Two separate methods for implementing this concept are discussed, one based on direction cosines, the other on quaternions. Two examples are discussed: constant orientation in space, and constant rate of change of the three angles with time. Third, two synchronous equatorial orbit communication satellite designs which use sunlight pressure to control their attitude are analyzed. Each design is equipped with large reflecting surfaces, called solar sails, which can be canted in different directions to generate torques to correct pointing errors.
