Associate Prof.Dr.Phanintra Teeranon is a researcher in linguistics. Her main research area is in Southeast Asian Linguistics, Articulatory, Acoustic and Perceptual Phonetics. She has been teaching in the English Department, School of Liberal Arts, Mae Fah Luang University since 2006. She is currently a linguistics lecturer in University of Phayao. Her major courses are Phonetics, Academic English, Senior Project and Seminar.

She has received 4 awards 1) TRF-CHE-SCOPUS Young Researcher Award (Humanities and Social Sciences), Thailand Research Fund (TRF), The Office of Higher Education Commission of Thailand (formerly known as CHE), and Scopus-Elsevier Asia in 2010, 2) Research Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) from The Office of Higher Education Commission of Thailand in January 2014, 3) Second Award Winner on Thailand Innovation's Day in 2016-2017, and 4) Silver Medal Award Winner from 2016 Kaohsiung International Invention and Design EXPO (KIDE) which was held by World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA) and Taiwan Invention Products Promotion Association (TIPPA).

She is now conducting research projects on Southeast Asian languages for MOU, and also Thai Educational Project for ChiangRai Provincial Education Organization and Innovation for Education Project for National Research Council of Thailand.

Thirty English-major students studying a course titled, Academic English 1 at Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand was selected as the subjects. Two main objectives were attested: attitude towards the use of portfolio, and reflection. Pre-test and post-test questionnaires were implemented for studentus attitudes. Self-reflective writing under six controlled questions through portfolio process together with statistical analysis was then combined. The findings revealed that portfolio has gained the positive attitude. The portfolio process and reflection encourages learners to effectively identify their own strengths and weaknesses of their language performance according to the 4 learning activities criteria: recollection, evaluation, analysis and critical thinking. This article examines the reflection of Thai EFL students through reflective writing as a tool by... more This article examines the reflection of Thai EFL students through reflective writing as a tool by analyzing learning activities in both normal-class learning sessions and cross-class learning sessions. In all, 60 students of Academic English 2 (AE2) and 60 students of Writing 3 (W3) in the 2011 academic year at Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand were required to complete reflective writing assignments for their normal classes. Then, the 2 classes were mixed up twice to conduct cross-class learning sessions. The students were again required to complete reflective writing assignments. The students in AE2 are first-year students while those in W3 are third-year students. Chinese Learners Learning Thai Language with an Application: Evidence from an Acoustic Study and a Perception Test

A comparison of Thai tones pronounced by 40 Chinese learners learning Thai at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University with 40 Thai native speakers was also conducted. The acoustic characteristics studied in this research were the fundamental frequencies analyzed with the Praat program version 6.0.9. The F0 values were then converted to semitone values. Statistical analysis was used. The perception test was conducted before and after using the application. The results showed that the Thai Tone Application promoted better tone pronunciation and perception in Chinese learners learning Thai as a foreign language. After utilizing the Thai Tone Application with the Chinese learners, they could clearly pronounce the mid and the low tones, which is linguistically classified as the problematic level tones for Chinese learners. The application helped expedite contour tones such as the high tone and the rising tone, but not the falling tone. The minimal pair approach used to create the application was discussed.

The Influence of Initial Consonants on the Intrinsic Pitch of High and Low Vowels in the Malay Dialect Spoken in Pathumthani Province, Thailand

High vowels tend to have higher intrinsic F0 (pitch) than low vowels (e.g. Lehiste, 1970; Whalen ... more High vowels tend to have higher intrinsic F0 (pitch) than low vowels (e.g. Lehiste, 1970; Whalen and Levitt, 1995). Higher intrinsic F0 occurs on vowels which follow voiceless consonants, lower intrinsic F0 occurs on vowels which follow voiced consonants. When high vowels follow voiced consonants and low vowels follow voiceless consonants, the voicing of initial consonants has been found to counterbalance the intrinsic F0 value of high and low vowels. In other words, voiced consonants will lower F0 values of high vowels, and voiceless consonants will raise F0 values of low vowels to the extent that the average F0 of these high vowels is actually lower than the average F0 of the low vowels under examination (Clark and Yallop, 1990; House and Fairbanks, 1953; Lehiste, 1970; Lehiste and Peterson, 1961; Laver, 1994). This paper aims to analyze the acoustic characteristics of initial consonant voicing perturbation... more This paper aims to analyze the acoustic characteristics of initial consonant voicing perturbation of the fundamental frequency of oral vowels and nasal vowels of Ban Doi Pwo Karen. Three age groups of informants were selected: over-sixty years old (>60), middle aged (35-45), and under-twenty years old (<20). The acoustic analysis method was employed to analyze the mean vowel duration (msec), mean vowel amplitude (dB), and mean vowel fundamental frequency (Hz). The results show that voiceless initial consonants tend to cause a lower fundamental frequency than that of the voiced initial consonants. This has excited controversy concerning the tonogenesis theory of initial voicing perturbation on vowels. However, it was later found that the vowels followed by voiceless initial consonants were breathy and it was the voice register of vowels that caused the low fundamental frequency values. The informants are three female radio announcers, 26 and 30 years of age. Their speech was recorded prior to informing them about the study. They were then asked to read two sets of tone checklists: unchecked and checked syllables. For each tone, five tokens were selected for each following context: (1) a salient syllable in one-syllable, two-syllable, and three-syllable rhythmic units, and (2) a weak syllable in a two-syllable rhythmic unit, the first weak syllable and the second weak syllable in a three-syllable rhythmic unit. The fundamental frequency values of all of the tokens were analyzed and recorded using WINCECIL and EXCEL. Line graphs were drawn to show the realization of different tones in different contexts. WINPSY 0602 2000 (School of Psychology, University of New South Wales) was used to analyze whether the variation between tone shapes is statistically significant.

UNESCO promotes learning cities and lifelong learning to assure sustainable resilience of communi... more UNESCO promotes learning cities and lifelong learning to assure sustainable resilience of community in a fast changing world. There are six dimensions affecting building a learning city according to UNESCO: planning, involvement, accessibility, monitoring and evaluation, celebration, and funding. Phayao Learning City has applied these dimensions in this framework, and this paper analyses the opinion of senior citizens in Phayao Province's about UNESCO's input on Phayao Learning City. There were 34 senior Phayao citizens who answered questionnaires derived from UNESCO's factor affecting Learning City. The statistical analysis of mean, S.D., and causal relationship were calculated. Another 15 subjects were asked to participate in the interview. Thematic analyses with themerhyme analysis were used for the interview data. The results, unlike most previous studies, have shown that the seniors mentioned 'Accessibility' as the most important factor for both lifelong learning and learning city. This factor received a positive direct effect (DE) (DE = 0.843) from 'Celebration' and positive indirect effect (IE) from 'Planning' (IE = 0.329) and 'Involvement' (IE = 0.195). On the contrary, 'Funding' showed a negative direct effect on 'Accessibility' (DE =-0.269). This means that funding is a hidden obstacle on building Phayao Learning City. The interview's results also supported data from the questionnaires. The results suggested that building Phayao Learning City requires a combination of factors.

The application helped expedite contour tones such as the high tone and the rising tone, but not the falling tone.

An Acoustic Study of Fundamental Frequency and Pauses in Depressive Teenagers in Thailand: A Pilot Study

Depression is a major public health problem among Thais. It has been reported that 30% of 70 mill... more Depression is a major public health problem among Thais. It has been reported that 30% of 70 million people living in Thailand suffer from depression. Suicide is a potential end result from mental illness, which normally involves depression. Diagnosis and treatment are key factors in the prevention of depression. In traditional diagnosis, there are two key methods of testing: (i) a screening test and interview and (ii) a biomarker test. In recent years, detecting depression with speech—a kind of biomarker test— has gained high acceptance. Cues of suprasegments in speech, such as pauses, loudness, tones, rhythm, and phonation, have been scientifically proven using acoustic methods of being indicators of depression. This paper has two main objectives: (i) to conduct a review of the use of suprasegments as cues and an analysis of the cues capable of indicating depression in Thailand and (ii) to analyze an acoustic study of pitch measured by the fundamental frequency and silent pause length in depressed and non-depressed participants. The method used in the study is the acoustic method of linguistics. Praat program version 6.2.09 was used to analyze the data. This is a pilot study of three depressed Thai students aged 20 compared with three non-depressed Thai participants. We propose a new perspective upon Thai language speech indicators that combines two or more cues in detecting depression (e.g. depression inventory with pause duration and word signs). Interestingly, it was found that the pitch of Thai tones may not be an appropriate cue for depression in Thais. This result conflicts with previous research conducted in other non-tonal languages. The results of this study lay the foundation for a Thai speech index for depression that can be further developed for the detection of depression.

This article aims to study literary relationship among Khlong Nirat Hariphunchai and Khlong Nirat... more This article aims to study literary relationship among Khlong Nirat Hariphunchai and Khlong Nirat Lanna, namely Khlong Mangtra Rop Chiang Mai, Khlong Nirat DoiKerng, and Khlong Nirat in the Central Thai region, namely Thawathotsamas Khlongdan and Kamsuan Khlongdan. The result of this study shows that Khlong Nirat Hariphunchai has a masterly style of composition and shows literary relationship with Khlong Nirat Lanna and Khlong Nirat in the Central Thai region in terms of figures of speech and emotional expressions. In addition, Khlong Nirat Hariphunchai shared some common literary characteristics with Khlong Nirat in the early Ayutthaya period. Therefore, Khlong Nirat Hariphunchai would be classified as Nirat in the early Ayutthaya period. Abstract This research aims to study the creative perpetuation of folk songs in modern Thai poetry and the ideas presented in that poetry from Chao Phraya Thammasakmontri's poetry until the present (2559 B.E.). The result shows that poets use folk songs to compose modern poetry employing all kinds of prosody: conventional prosody, local prosody and compound prosody. The poems show the mixture of conventional, adapted and combined versions of prosodies. Various techniques have been used in creating content of folk songs including the use of allusion, adaptation and parody and poets may present some ideas related to social and cultural contexts e.g. ideas about life, nature, society and culture or government and politics. Abstract This article aims to explore the conservatism of male characters in Huang Rak - Hew Luek, the novel by Luang Vichit Vadakan, and its unpleasant effects on female characters. The result of the study reveals that there are three relationship-based types of conservatism that make trouble for female characters as follows: 1. The conservatism between fathers and daughters; 2. The conservatism between husbands and wives; and 3. The conservatism between other male and female characters. The reason why the conservatism of male characters is troublesome for female characters is that female characters possess more modern ways of thinking, while old-fashioned ideas still persist amongst male characters. This difference leads to conflicts. Female characters have different responses to these old values, including acceptance, rejection, counterattack, and fighting against the old values. Abstract This research aimed to study forms of language or language strategies used in wedding blessings. The scope of this study was limited only to wedding celebrations of urban dwellers in Bangkok. The data were collected from 10 video clips published on www.youtube.com from 2013 to 2018. Five language strategies were used in wedding blessings, namely, lexical choices, claiming, presupposition, metaphor and rhetorical question. These linguistic devices conveyed the four sets of wedding blessing topics: a) good qualities of the couple guaranteeing a good marriage life; b) advice on marriage life provided by the guest of honor; c) the guest of honor considered an important person who is a representative to bless the wedding couple and d) having a good marriage life with a good spouse, love, warmth and sustainability. Whether the guest of honor either used or did not use any language strategies reflected the ideas, belief, culture, and way of life of people in society. Abstract This article examines a temporal conceptual metaphor in the calendar system as reflected in metaphorical expressions used by the speakers of the Lampang dialect of Thai. The data were collected from the interviews of six informants who live in Thoen District, Lampang Province. It was found that the metaphorical expressions used by Lampang dialect of Thai speakers reflect the conceptual metaphor that TIME IS A CONTAINER through the use of prepositions "in front of " and "inside" that represent the future time. Telling the future time of the Lampang Thai people is like walking or moving to a stacked space. Therefore, telling the future time of the Lampang dialect of Thai speakers is related to the positions of time, speakers and sequences of events. Abstract The purpose of this research was to investigate errors in Thai writing of 80 non-Thai international students of Assumption University who enrolled in the five-month Introduction to Thai course during the first and second semesters of the 2017 academic year. 240 exercises were analysed and four types of errors were found: spelling, word usage, sentence structure, spacing and use of punctuation marks. Abstract This paper analyzes the semantic components of classifiers in Lao in order to classify the nouns used with those classifiers. The data has been selected from interviews with three Laotian informants, all natives and residents of Vientiane Prefecture, Lao People's Democratic Republic.

form in Japanese. Japanese Corpus, BCCWJ, was used in collecting actual language usage from
various printed sources. The study aims at applying real situation language to research and
analyzing rational of using Hiragana form or Katakana form in written language. Frequency
of “gomi” appeared in Hiragana form and in Katakana form was counted. The results pointed
out that from 11 printed sources appeared in BCCWJ, “gomi” written in Hiragana form
outnumbered Katakana form. The only source “gomi” was written in Hiragana form is in
government memorandums. Text books, advertisements, official documents, and newspapers
were mostly written by Hiragana form. However, books, magazines, poems, yahoo blogs and
yahoo answers were likely to be written in Katakana form. It was also implied that government
documents tend to use Hiragana form which corresponds to Japanese writing rules. In addition,
Japanese writing trend tend to be relatively changed; Katakana form is widely applied to
entertainment and public media or uncensored media, e.g. internet.

An acoustic analysis and a perceptual study of Thai tones: produced by Vietnamese and Khmer speakers (in Thai)

This study aims to analyze acoustic factors and perceptual test of Thai tones produced by Vietnam... more This study aims to analyze acoustic factors and perceptual test of Thai tones produced by Vietnamese and Khmer. Tones produced by Thai native speakers were also used as a norm of comparison. Praat program version 4601 was implemented as an analysis tool. Among 5 tones in Thai (mid tone, low tone, falling tone, high tone, and rising tone), 35 Vietnamese learners (native speakers of tone language) and 35 Khmer learners (native speakers of non-tone language) studying Thai as a foreign language acoustically produced clear static (mid and low) and dynamic (falling, high, rising) Thai tones. However, Khmer learners have produced less clear contour tones comparing to Vietnamese learners. On the perception test, 100 Thai learners listening to Thai tone words pronounced by Khmer and Vietnamese learners found it hard to differentiated words with mid tone from those with low tone. This study indicated that the effect of native speakers of the non-tonal language and tonal language in Thai tone words exposure incorporated with Thai tone production and perception. In addition, contour tones produced by Khmer were steeper comparing to those produced by Thai and Vietnamese. In addition, the results found in this study were applied with practicing Thai tones mobile application for Vietnamese learners.
