In human crowds as well as in many animal societies, local interactions among individuals often g... more In human crowds as well as in many animal societies, local interactions among individuals often give rise to self-organized collective organizations that offer functional benefits to the group. For instance, flows of pedestrians moving in opposite directions spontaneously segregate into lanes of uniform walking directions. This phenomenon is often referred to as a smart collective pattern, as it increases the traffic efficiency with no need of external control.

But there is also a more fundamental interest for physicists to study pedestrian crowds, as these exhibit collective phenomena and show several types of pattern formation.

However, it is still not known how exactly are the humans adjusting their behavior locally, nor what are the direct consequences on the emergent organization. One of the underlying mechanisms of adjusting individual motions is the stepping dynamics.

This paper is motivated by the objective of improving the realism of real-time simulated crowds b... more This paper is motivated by the objective of improving the realism of real-time simulated crowds by reducing short term collision avoidance through long term anticipation of pedestrian trajectories. For this aim, we choose to reuse outdoor pedestrian trajectories obtained with non-invasive means. This initial step is achieved by analyzing the recordings of multiple synchronized video cameras. In a second off-line stage, we fit as long as possible trajectory segments within predefined paths made of a succession of region goals.

Des phénomènes macroscopiques émergent de la combinaison de ces interactions locales. Aujourd'hui, les simulateurs de foule ne prennent généralement en compte que l'évitement de collision comme unique type d'interaction possible entre piétons. Dans cet article, nous proposons d'étudier en profondeur les interactions de suivi entre piétons souvent ignorées par les modèles de simulation. Plus précisément, nous étudions les interactions éphémères entre marcheurs individuels qui surviennent lorsque deux piétons sont amenés à partager une portion de leur trajet. Notre principale contribution est un modèle numérique pour simuler de telles interactions. Notre approche est expérimentale. Nous élaborons et calibrons un modèle à partir d'analyses microscopiques de données cinématiques réelles collectées lors d'expériences en laboratoire. L'évaluation du réalisme des trajectoires simulées est implicitement réalisée à l'échelle microscopique lors du calibrage du modèle. Cependant, nous évaluons également le réalisme des simulations à une échelle macroscopique en comparant, entre simulation et réalité, les structures spatio-temporelles auto-formées par les piétons, des agrégations, qui émergent de ces interactions.

The solution produces several paths joining each user-defined pair of locations in the environment. Pairs are possible initial/goal locations for the virtual characters. The obtained paths diversity enables individual behaviorial diversity, while ensuring the achievement of potentially complex goals.

The method is integrated in a randomized motion planning scheme, including a steering method dedicated to human walk. This steering method integrates a character motion controller assuming realistic animations. The navigation of the character through a virtual environment is modeled as a composition of Bezier curves. The controller is based on motion capture data editing techniques.

Whereas many previous interfaces preserve or stimulate the users proprioception, the Joyman aims at preserving equilibrioception in order to improve the feeling of immersion during virtual locomotion tasks. The proposed interface is based on the metaphor of a human-scale joystick.

By contrast, our paper focuses on interactions due to the following behaviors of pedestrians.
