The MiniVol air sampler was used to collect PM from the ambient air at six monitoring sites in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Sampling was conducted every day for seven days, for a period of 24 hours. PM2.5 concentrations at Uniport Junction, GRA Junction, Slaughter Roundabout, Abuloma Jetty, Rumuomasi Roundabout, and New Road Borokiri were 38.6 g/m3 , 28.3 g/m3 , 93.7 g/m3 , 72.9 g/m3 , 30.6 g/m3 , and 31.3 g/m3 , respectively. PM10 concentrations ranged from 71.2 g/m3 to 60.6 g/m3 , with 103.3 g/m3 , 85.5 g/m3 , 40.1 g/m3 , and 35.2 g/m3 being the highest. The level of PM2.5 and PM10 pollution in the ambient air was high across the six sampling sites, with mean PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations exceeding the WHO (2011) guideline. The results reveal that the spatial pattern of heavy metals is successfully interpolated based on situ data by using Ordinary Kriging technique. Samples were dried to remove moisture content and poured into a set of BSS standard sieves and mechanically vibrated for at least fifteen minutes to enable the grains to separate into their different sizes. Textural and statistical parameters were then calculated from the results of the particle size distribution. The result shows that the grain size ranges from -2 φ – -1 φ (granules) to 3 φ – 4 φ (very fine sand). The average mean of the population is 0.89 φ, with a modal class in the 1 φ – 2 φ size grade. The average sorting value is 1.26 σ which indicates a poorly sorted population. The areal, linear, and relief aspects of the Orashi River basin were examined as morphometric parameters. The lower Orashi river basin, according to the findings, has a total size of 625.61 km2 and a perimeter of 307.98 km, with a 5th order river network based on Strahler categorization and a dendritic drainage pattern. Because of low drainage density, the drainage texture is very fine, the relief is low, and the slope is very low. An integrated approach to investigate the spatial groundwater quality in Ogbia LGA in Bayelsa Sta... more An integrated approach to investigate the spatial groundwater quality in Ogbia LGA in Bayelsa State using WQI and GIS was made. Results from 10 (ten) physicochemical parameters (pH, conductivity, TDS, sulphate, nitrate, sodium, calcium, chloride, magnesium, hardness, iron) analysed on each of the 50 (fifty) groundwater samples from shallow boreholes across the area was used to compute WQI using WHO 2006 as a standard for potable water. Based on calculated WQI, boreholes were classified into excellent, proper, weak, very poor, unsuitable for drinking. Kriging method was then used to generate a digitised WQI map of Ogbia communities based on WQI classes. The map showed excellent to good water was accessible in some parts of Onuebum, Otuasega, Otuoke, Otuogila, Elebele, Emeyal and Oloibiri, whereas, very poor to unfit water occurred at some parts of Ewol, Opume, Akipli and Otuabagi.

Three surface refraction seismic profiles were conducted in a site targeted for huge construction... more Three surface refraction seismic profiles were conducted in a site targeted for huge construction in an underdeveloped area in Opolo, Yenagoa city to portray some of the subsurface soil engineering characteristics for the purposes of construction. The Generalized Reciprocal Method (GRM) was used to interpret the acquired P and S-wave. Various shallow rock engineering parameters such as Oedometric modulus, Concentration Index, Material Index, Lame’s constant, Density Gradient, Stress Ratio, Shear modulus, Bearing capacity, and N-value were calculated in other to assess the strength of the subsurface from a geophysical and engineering perspective. The values from the seismic velocity and strength parameters indicates that the bedrock layer (layer 3) of the area studied is characterized by more competent rock quality than layer 1 and 2. Hence, the Opolo site is suggested for construction activities with percussive measures.

The electrical resistivity survey using the Schlumberger electrode configuration was conducted ... more The electrical resistivity survey using the Schlumberger electrode configuration was conducted in parts of the Yenagoa local government area, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The survey was aimed at estimating the volume of sand in a piece of land measuring 60 m by 30 m known as the study area. Nine 1D Vertical Electrical Sounding Points were acquired in the study area. ABEM Terrameter SAS 1000 was the instrument used with IPI2win and ZONDIP software for processing. The result obtained reveals that the area contains three layers within the depth of investigation. Lateritic sand with resistivity ranging from 42 Ωm to 1029 Ωm and thickness varying from 1.3 m to 3.0 m made up the first layer. The second layer is sand with resistivity values ranging from 476 Ωm to 3089 Ωm with thickness varying from 10.8 m to 23.2 m. The third layer is sandy clay with resistivity values ranging from 24 to 1024 Ωm. The survey shows that a considerable quantity of sand can be dredged from the area. The estimated volume of sand within the area of study is estimated to be approximately 550,767.60 tonnes. The result shows that sand deposits can be mined economically for domestic and building purposes and are also suitable for other engineering and construction work due to their inherent water permeability and storage ability.

The study established the use of Electrical Resistivity Method and Geospatial Technolog... more The study established the use of Electrical Resistivity Method and Geospatial Technology to investigate soil corrosivity and competence in part of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. A total of 22 Geoelectric was acquired using Abem Terrameter SAS1000 and Schlumberger configuration with a maximum half current electrode spacing of 160 m. Geoelectric layers were determined using IPI2win software and ArcGIS 10.4 for modeling. The results indicate a low elevation of 0.65 m and a high elevation of 29.09 m with an estimated land area of approximately 80 km2, geoelectrical sections of three layers are observed but our main interest is the Topsoil (first layer) and perhaps the second layer with respect to depth. The soil corrosivity of topsoil indicates five corrosivity class namely essentially non-corrosive with an estimated land area of 59%, moderately corrosive is 9%, mildly corrosive with 12%, and soil competent indicating moderately competent of 0.10% and 99% incompetent with geoelectric curve present H, K KH and AH, with a thickness range from 0.4 m to 1.5 m while layer 2 indicate the area contain incompetent with 4.98 km2 land area, moderately competent 28 km2 land area cover, competent 19 km2 and highly competent with a land area cover of 31.39 km2 and soil corrosivity indicate three class namely moderately corrosive with 6% land area, mildly corrosive contains 17% and essentially non-corrosive indicate 61.68 km2 with 77% land area present in layer 2 with thickness ranging from 1.2 m to 18.89 m. Therefore, corrosion-resistant pipes are strongly recommended to forestall challenges associate with rupture of corroded pipes with a depth of about 2 m depth as recommended and GIS techniques have shown to be a useful tool in mapping soil corrosivity and competence using geophysical data.

FLOOD SIMULATION AND TERRAIN ANALYSIS BETWEEN 2018 AND 2019 IN THE NIGER DELTA: A CASE STUDY OF YENAGOA AND ITS ENVIRONS

In recent times, due to climate change and other environmental factors, flooding has been a recur... more In recent times, due to climate change and other environmental factors, flooding has been a recurrent problem in most parts of the world, the Niger Delta inclusive. Governments are constantly in search of ways to combat this environmental crisis to save life and property. This research, therefore, uses flood simulation to determine flood prone regions in the study area and when these flood zones are safe for people to occupy. It also uses terrain analyses to determine the drainage pattern within the study area. This research explores the use of Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data and Borehole data to monitor flood prone areas and digital elevation models (DEM) to determine the drainage patterns with the aid of Arc Scene 10.6 and Arc Map 10.6 software. Results show that the study area has 147 catchment areas, a dendritic drainage pattern, and elevation ranging from-14m to 38m. Borehole water level monitoring revealed that the flooding episode of 2018 was outsized by that of 2019. The flood simulation models indicate that flooding within the study area is cyclic in nature with floodwaters beginning to rise slowly in the middle of the year, peaks in November and drops sharply by December. From simulations. Based on this work, the southwestern areas in the study area would require a lot more flood mitigation processes to prevent loss of lives and properties during the flood season and would be safe for habitation in the early months of the year.

Vertical Electrical Sounding method was applied for the purpose of aquifer characterisation in Is... more Vertical Electrical Sounding method was applied for the purpose of aquifer characterisation in Ishiayi Community in Ahoada West LGA of Rivers State to determine the best point to site borehole in a production complex and best depth range of the well to screen to avoid seasonal effect on the aquifer yield and high iron content associated with shallow aquiferous unit in the area. Results from 3 (three) VES points along a profile within the survey facility showed that 7 (seven) geoelectric layers existed to the depth of investigation, with a top to bottom sequence of sandstone > clay & sandstone > clay > sandstone (first aquifer) > clay > sandstone (second aquifer) > clay, the layers were laterally continuous across all VES points but varied in thicknesses. 2 (two) aquifers were delineated of which the interest was the second aquifer because literature from the area showed that the shallower aquifer yield was season dependent and mostly reported to have high iron content. The best drilling point (VES 2) with optimum aquifer yield was inferred from the information on maximum thickness and depth profile of the aquiferous zone across the survey area. The maximum thickness of the target aquifer along the profile is 13.6 m occurring beneath VES 2 with a resistivity of 635 Ωm consistent with freshwater bearing sandstones in the area.
