The Commander, advised by his General Staff, assesses each COA and selects subjectively the one that best meets the mission statement. Such decision-making process has no simulation tool to assist the Commander and his General Staff in confronting their own COA with possible enemy COAs. We analyzed how the Brazilian Ministry of Defense (MD) codifies knowledge in such simulated confrontation, their structures and the knowledge flow. Starting with the information from MD doctrines, we structured the explicit knowledge in models and diagrams, which describe business processes, taxonomies, conceptual maps, and mental maps. A systematic mapping was performed on gamification in higher education to understand its main ben... more A systematic mapping was performed on gamification in higher education to understand its main benefits, the most investigated gamification techniques and the main characteristics of a gamification design needed to apply in a course. Gamification is a practice adopted to encourage motivation and commitment of individuals involved in a specific activity. The results indicated that gamification designs in high education have positive effect on motivation, engagement and leaning. Gamification provide regular feedback to students and foster student’s interest, attention, attendance and interaction in classroom. The most used game elements in the selected articles were points, achievements and leaderboards, followed by levels, rewards, feedback and challenges. The effectiveness of a gamification design has been often evaluated through students’ results, activities and/or perceptions.

The objective of this work is to analyze the role of space in video games, in order to understand... more The objective of this work is to analyze the role of space in video games, in order to understand how game space affects the player in achieving game goals. Game spaces have evolved from a single two-dimensional screen to huge, detailed and complex three-dimensional environments. Those changes transformed the player’s experience and have encouraged the exploration and manipulation of the space. Our studies review the functions that space plays, describe the possibilities that it offers to the player and explore its characteristics. We also analyze location-based games where the player’s position in game space is relative to his position in physical world. We saw in previous studies that there are more than one way to discuss space in games. Our understanding goes further and analyzes the game space in four aspects: gameworld, gameplay, player perspective and game view. In this work, we formally build the construct of games as information systems. Starting from mode... more In this work, we formally build the construct of games as information systems. Starting from models and definitions that describe them, we present models that show game elements: components, players, environment, and their relations; as information systems elements. This paper also presents the analysis of five games and their elements based on that premise. As a ratification of our rationale, we present tools and visions shared by both fields. The presented premise and rationale could be easily linked to video games but, moreover, they are valid to all forms of games like tabletop games or sports.
