Este artigo tem como objetivo compreender ideologias relacionadas ao uso da tradução automática n... more Este artigo tem como objetivo compreender ideologias relacionadas ao uso da tradução automática na sala de aula de língua inglesa por parte de discentes do CLAC-UFRJ (Cursos de Línguas Aberto à Comunidade - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). Para tanto, adotamos a concepção de ideologia de Volóchinov (1929 [2017]) e discorremos sobre a desconstrução do suposto papel negativo da tradução no aprendizado e na aquisição de um idioma, como apontado por Malmkjær (2010). Depois de retomarmos discussões recentes sobre o uso da tradução e, principalmente, da tradução automática, na sala de aula de línguas, apresentamos a aplicação de um questionário anônimo elaborado no aplicativo Google Forms que serviu para testar nossas hipóteses de pesquisa: (H1) na produção escrita de textos em inglês, os/as discentes sentem necessidade de utilizar ferramentas de tradução automática; (H2) os/as discentes recorrem a essas ferramentas, pois têm dificuldade de aprendizado e/ou pouca afinidade com ess...

Os estudos de tradução e da adaptação têm consolidado, cada vez mais, o seu lugar na Linguística ... more Os estudos de tradução e da adaptação têm consolidado, cada vez mais, o seu lugar na Linguística Aplicada brasileira. São diversos os programas de pósgraduação da área que abarcam, em suas linhas de pesquisas, a compreensão dos processos de tradução e de adaptação na tentativa de investigar o modo como, no cenário contemporâneo, de fluxos sociais intensificados e cenários semiótico-culturais cada vez mais complexos, práticas discursivas diversas se movimentam, sendo de/reconstruídas em entrecruzamentos e interpenetrações sempre sócio-historicamente situados. Nesse sentido, grande parte das pesquisas que abordam processos de tradução e de adaptação deixam de ser reconhecidas apenas por suas contribuições técnicas-como o ocorrido em alguns momentos da constituição desses campos-para se focar na criação de inteligibilidade sobre questões em que a linguagem, num sentido amplo do termo, tem papel predominante. Atualmente, no início da segunda década do século XXI, os estudos da tradução têm construído suas investigações transdisciplinarmente a partir de atravessamentos provocados não apenas pelos estudos das linguagens, mas também pelos estudos culturais, crítica feminista, teorias queer, estudos literários, ciência das ideologias, dentre outras abordagens possíveis. Os estudos da adaptação, de modo semelhante, ampliou o diálogo também com os estudos das mídias, cinema, ciência política, estudos dos letramentos etc. Nesse movimento, o que está em jogo, para além de um desenvolvimento puramente acadêmico dos estudos da tradução e adaptação, é um compromisso com a compreensão da sociedade em seus fluxos e com um fazer científico responsivo e responsável à contemporaneidade. O livro Nossos corpos, por nós mesmas é uma tradução do famoso Our Bodies, Ourselves-uma obra fem... more O livro Nossos corpos, por nós mesmas é uma tradução do famoso Our Bodies, Ourselves-uma obra feminista sobre saúde e sexualidade da mulher que nasceu nos EUA na década de setenta e que foi traduzida para mais de trinta idiomas desde então. A tradução para o português do Brasil é recente e surgiu de um projeto de cooperação científica entre duas universidades públicas brasileiras (UFRJ e Unicamp). Neste artigo, apresentamos o desenvolvimento desse projeto e discutimos algumas decisões tomadas em relação ao uso de linguagem inclusiva e feminista, recorrendo aos subsídios teóricos dos estudos de tradução feministas (CASTRO, 2013; CASTRO e ERGUN, 2018) e à intersecção entre tradução e sexualidade (SANTAEMILLIA, 2018).
In the field of Translation Studies, paratexts included in translated books have been increasingl... more In the field of Translation Studies, paratexts included in translated books have been increasingly used by researchers as part of their descriptive-based studies, which has originated a wealth of theory about the functions that paratexts play in translated materials. However, for the most part, researchers have focused on literary translations and, as result, little is known about the functions and characteristics of paratexts in translations of specialized books. The paper addresses this gap by comparing 26 paratexts (forewords and introductions) taken from Brazilian translations of Shakespeare’s Hamlet with 24 paratexts taken from 200 translations of academic books (e.g. medicine, engineering, biology, physics) published over the last six decades. It discusses similarities and differences between the topics that both corpora of paratexts address.

This study evaluates the translations of specialized lexical combinations (L’HOMME; BERTRAND, 200... more This study evaluates the translations of specialized lexical combinations (L’HOMME; BERTRAND, 2000) produced by two different machine translation systems, i.e., Google Translate and DeepL. The selected lexical combinations have a verb+noun structure and were extracted from a legal genre known as “arbitration clauses”. A methodology for selecting the specialized lexical combinations and evaluating the adequacy and fluency of the translations is presented. The results are in line with recent research in the field of neural machine translation (NMT) suggesting that the outputs of this type of machine translation system are more “fluent” than “adequate” (KOEHN; KNOWLES, 2017). A tradução de textos sobre assuntos técnicos e especializados está pervasivamente presente na vid... more A tradução de textos sobre assuntos técnicos e especializados está pervasivamente presente na vida do brasileiro mediano. Não obstante a ampla disseminação desse tipo de conteúdo traduzido, pouco se percebe, nesse cenário, a figura do tradutor. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar os dados coletados em pesquisa de sondagem sobre o perfil de tradutores atuantes no mercado brasileiro de tradução especializada. Existem estudos deste tipo sobre outros mercados (norte-americano e europeu), como por exemplo o trabalho pioneiro de Venuti (1995) que denunciou a invisibilidade do tradutor literário, mas poucos sobre o mercado brasileiro de tradução especializada. Nesta pesquisa, obtiveram-se respostas relacionadas à percepção que os profissionais de tradução têm de si mesmos e das condições de trabalho atuais nesse mercado.

A criação de recursos terminológicos multilingues, em geral, e de recursos terminológicos multili... more A criação de recursos terminológicos multilingues, em geral, e de recursos terminológicos multilingues cobrindo a área do direito, em particular, depara-se frequentemente com o problema de ligar terminologias potencialmente anisomórficas devido a diferenças entre sistemas conceptuais, linguísticos e culturais. Esta dificuldade tem feito com que a qualidade e até mesmo a possibilidade da tradução de textos jurídicos tenha sido questionada, pois para alguns autores certos termos jurídicos são simplesmente intraduzíveis. Nesta contribuição pretende-se mostrar que a intraduzibilidade da terminologia jurídica pode ser relativizada. Afin d'alléger le travail d'annotation de contex-tes illustrant le comportement syntaxico... more Afin d'alléger le travail d'annotation de contex-tes illustrant le comportement syntaxico-sémantique des termes du domaine de spécialité de l'informatique et de l'Internet en français, une méthode d'annotation automatique a été conçue. Dans cet article, nous proposons d'évaluer une partie du système d'annotation automatique de lexies verbales. Nous évaluons la méthode auto-matique de la tâche d'identification d'actants (également appelés arguments) et circonstants (en anglais, adjuncts) en performance et en temps. Nous avons procédé en deux étapes. Dans la première, deux terminologues repèrent les erreurs d'identification les plus fréquentes. Dans la seconde, ils identifient manuellement les ac-tants et circonstants dans des contextes d'un échantillon de termes afin de mesurer le temps nécessaire pour réaliser cette tâche. Capturing syntactico-semantic regularities among terms: An application of the FrameNet methodology to terminology

Multilingual terminological resources do not always include the equivalents of specialized verbs ... more Multilingual terminological resources do not always include the equivalents of specialized verbs that occur in legal texts. This study aims to bridge that gap by proposing a methodology to assign the equivalents of this kind of predicative units. We use a comparable corpus of judgments produced by the Supreme Court of Canada and by the Supremo Tribunal de Justiça de Portugal. From this corpus, 200 English and Portuguese verbs are selected. The description of the verbs is based on the theory of Frame Semantics (Fillmore 1977, 1977, 1982, 1985) as well as on the FrameNet methodology (Ruppenhofer et al. 2010). Specialized verbs are said to evoke a semantic frame, a sort of conceptual scenario in which a number of mandatory elements play specific roles (e.g. the role of judge, the role of defendant). Given that semantic frames are language independent to a fair degree (Boas 2005; Baker 2009), the labels attributed to each of the 76 identified frames (e.g. [Crime], [Regulations]) were used to group together 165 pairs of candidate equivalents. 71% of them are full equivalents, whereas 29% are only partial equivalents.

This paper investigates the methodological bases for assigning terminological equivalents that ha... more This paper investigates the methodological bases for assigning terminological equivalents that have been proposed by lexicographers and terminologists. It will be argued that consistent methodologies for assigning equivalents are still lacking. We then describe a methodology based on Frame Semantics (Fillmore 1977, 1982, 1985; Fillmore and Atkins 1992) for assigning the equivalents of specialized verbs that occur in a comparable corpus of judgments and we provide arguments to the effect that a methodological approach to the establishment of terminological equivalence based on the frames evoked by the terms as well as on their syntagmatic behaviour is a suitable approach for the identification of equivalents. The resulting descriptions of the specialized verbs, of the frames and the identified equivalents were encoded in a resource called JuriDiCo from which examples will be drawn to illustrate our point.

Although Aeronautical Meteorology language is not generally regarded as standard communication be... more Although Aeronautical Meteorology language is not generally regarded as standard communication between air traffic controllers and pilots, it plays an important role in Air Traffic Control (ATC) communication since it comprises phraseology and plain language used to communicate weather phenomena which interfere in aviation operations. Then, this paper focuses on the meteorology terminology used by Brazilian experts and discusses whether Aeronautical Meteorology is a hybrid field. Based on the theory of lexical semantics for terminology proposed by L’Homme (2020), the syntactic and semantic properties of a small set of Portuguese terms were analyzed in two separate textual corpora, i.e. a corpus representative of Aviation language and a corpus representative of Aeronautical language.
