Objective: To investigate the chemo-preventive effect of subcutaneous injection of bovine lactofe... more Objective: To investigate the chemo-preventive effect of subcutaneous injection of bovine lactofericin (LfcinB) against 7, 12 dimethylbenz (a) anthracene (DMBA) induced carcinogenesis in swiss albino female mice. Methods: 30 animals were divided into 3 groups. 200μl of DMBA (0.025μg/μl) per animal three times per week as topical was used to induce skin cancer in both groups II and III. In addition to DMBA, group III was protected with subcutaneous injection of LfcinB (20μg/μl) while group I served as control. At the end of 16 th week lysates/blood/serum were subjected to various tests such as antioxidant, glucose, liver enzymes and kidney marker parameters. Results: Topical application of 200μl DMBA (0.025μg/μl) per animal three times per week has produced 100% tumor incidence in DMBA treated group at the end of 16 th week whereas only 20% developed tumors in the LfcinB+DMBA treated group. In this field of research, the strain of Escherichia coli O86:B7 has been at the forefront, but this Gram-negative microorganism presents a safety concern and therefore cannot be considered as a probiotic. To address this challenge, this study explored the identification of novel lactic acid bacteria with a safe history of use, producing α-Gal and having probiotic potential. The lactic acid bacteria were isolated from different traditionally fermented foods (kununn-zaki, kindirmo, and pulque) and were screened for the production of α-Gal and some specific probiotic potential indicators. Prevalence and risks factors of the novel Escherichia albertii among gastroenteritis patients in Kano State, Nigeria

Background: Escherichia albertii is an enteric bacteria associated with infectious gastroenteriti... more Background: Escherichia albertii is an enteric bacteria associated with infectious gastroenteritis. However, information on this organism remains scant in Nigeria. The work was aimed at determining the prevalence of E. albertii among gastroenteritis patients (GEP) in relation to some risk and demographic factors. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional hospital-based research. A total of 540 stool samples, 450 from GEPs and 90 from apparently healthy individuals, were screened for the pathogen. The isolates were characterized by using both conventional and molecular techniques. Data were obtained using a structured questionnaire and were analyzed for the determination of some risk and demographic factors. Odds ratio and chi-square were used to ascertain the relationship between the factors and the disease. Results: Escherichia albertii was detected with an overall prevalence of 1.1%, which was 1.3% and 0% in the GEPs and apparently healthy individuals, respectively (Odd ratio = 2.6468, 95% CI, 0.1478–47.4042). Diarrhea and abdominal pain were statistically the significant manifestations of the disease. There was an equal prevalence in both males and females (1.3%), however, by chance higher (2.1%) among children aged 0 to 10 years. Additionally, primary school as the highest educational status and open defecation were found to be the risk factors of the infection. Conclusions: Escherichia albertii should be routinely targeted diagnostically in the patients presented with gastroenteritis in the studied area. Neither gender nor age was a risk factor, however open defecation was a significant risk factor of the disease.

A survey was carried out to detect antibodies to Trichinella in humans and slaughtered pigs in Ka... more A survey was carried out to detect antibodies to Trichinella in humans and slaughtered pigs in Kaduna metropolis, Nigeria. Serum samples were collected from 186 pigs which were slaughtered at the main pig abattoir in Kaduna metropolis and were tested serologically for antibodies to Trichinella by ELISA using excretory-secretory (E/S) antigen. Out of the 186 pig serum samples collected, 56 were from juvenile pigs (10.7%) and 130 from adult pigs (14.6%). Male pigs had a prevalence rate of 12.6% which was slightly lower than that of the female (14.1%). An overall prevalence rate of 13.4% was observed in this study. Occurrence of fumonisins and deoxynivalenol in stored maize used in industrial productions in Zaria Nigeria

Fifty three samples of four varieties of maize were obtained from 18 storage facilities in Zaria ... more Fifty three samples of four varieties of maize were obtained from 18 storage facilities in Zaria and its environs, all within Kaduna State, Nigeria and plated directly on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Samples which yielded Fusarium species were further tested for the presence of toxins. Seven samples yielded fumonisins alone, while both fumonisins and deoxynivalenol (DON) were found in three samples corresponding to 18.87% toxin contamination rate. Fusarium verticilloides was found to be the most toxigenic species occurring in eight toxin-contaminated samples while Fusarium proliferatum occurred only once. Three samples had fumonisin content above the 5 ppm threshold value while the other samples did not exceed the 1 ppm upper limit for DON. Fusarium contamination of grains used in industrial productions exists and thus there is the need for regulations guiding the storage and industrial utilisation of maize to minimize the risk of mycotoxicoses in humans and animals.

The aim of this research was to isolate, determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern and detect molecularly, PVL and msrA genes from Staphylococcus aureus isolated from skin and soft tissue infections in Zaria. Four hundred skin and soft tissue (SSTI) specimens were collected from some hospitals in Zaria and screened for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. The male-to-female ratio of patients with SSTIs was approximately 2:1 (62.30% in male and 37.70% in female). The highest frequency of 30% was observed in the 51-60 years age group. Microbiological analyses showed tsire to have highest aerobic plate count of log 10 6.27; B. cereus count was highest at log 10 3.30 cfu/ g; Clostridium perfringens count was highest at log 10 2.92 cfu/g; Staphylococcal count was highest at log 10 3.96 cfu/g; Coliform count was highest at log 10 4.08 cfu/g; yeast and mould count was highest at log 10 2.49 cfu/g. The proximate analysis showed tsire to averagely have 11.87% moisture, 31.77% protein, 23.16% fat and 2.43% salt. The critical appraisal of the production process indicated potential hazards in the raw meat, environmental contamination as well as post-process handling contamination from humans and the environment. The nature of microorganisms associated with tsire production as shown by this study calls for worry from the public health standpoint. In the light of this, efforts should be made by public health services with regard to improving its production in order to reduce the associated hazards.

The composition of gut microbiota has been linked to human health and has been associated with severity of malaria. Fermented foods contribute to the community of healthy gut bacteria. Despite the studies connecting gut microbiota to the prevention of malaria transmission and severity, research on developing functional foods for the purpose of manipulating the gut microbiota for malaria control is limited. This review summarizes recent knowledge on the role of the gut microbiota in malaria prevention and treatment. This information should encourage the search for lactic acid bacteria expressing α-Gal and those that exhibit the desired immune stimulating properties for the development of functional food and probiotics for malaria control.
