We characterized the role of Bregs in the progression of gastric cancer. We detected an increase in Bregs producing IL-10 both in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and in gastric tumors. Multicolor flow cytometry analysis revealed that a subset of CD19+CD24hiCD38hi B cells produces IL-10. Functional studies indicated that increased Bregs do not inhibit the proliferation of CD3+T cells or CD4+ helper T cells (Th cells). However, Bregs do suppress the secretion of IFN-γ and TNF-α by CD4+Th cells. CD19+CD24hiCD38hiBregs were also found to correlate positively with CD4+FoxP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs). Neutralization experiments showed that Bregs convert CD4+CD25- effector T cells to CD4+FoxP3+Tregs via TGF-β1. ABSTRACT This paper proposes a novel strategy for formally analyzing functional requirements spec... more ABSTRACT This paper proposes a novel strategy for formally analyzing functional requirements specification (FRS) and applies it to the Automatic Train Protection and Block (ATPB) system, which 44 cl) is proposed to reconstruct conventional rail lines in Japan. Based on the FRS in natural language, firstly, dynamic state transitions are extracted to express the operational mechanisms and determine the system parameters. A complete model of the ATPB system is then established using Unified Modeling Language (UML) to express the system structure graphically and 44 explicitly. After achieving a common understanding, a VDM++ model is established formally to redescribe the original FRS of the ATPB system which is written in natural language (i.e. c.) Japanese). Following that, in order to ensure internal consistency of the specification, proof obligations of the VDM++ model are discharged. Furthermore, a comprehensive testing is implemented to ensure that the FRS meets actual requirements. Finally, the system is simulated strictly in accordance with the formal specification. Without any runtime errors, collisions or derailments, the results of the simulation demonstrate the high quality and safety of the specification.

In order to verify the rigor of this process, the specification is analyzed formally in this paper. After studying the system, the functional requirements are clarified firstly. Followed by the formal specification is established by VDM explicitly, including the state variables and top-level operations. Then the internal consistence of the formal specification is validated, which can prevent potential runtime errors in software program. Lastly, in order to ensure that the specification satisfies requirements, the requirements are transformed to corresponding inference rules, and then validated by discharging proof obligations. The work in this paper indicates that if the software system of a CBTC system is designed strictly in accordance with the specification, it will be internal consistent with high reliability, and satisfy the design requirements.

Many studies have shown that disease occurrences and particularly the number of deaths due to the disease can be reduced significantly by screening and vaccination. East Africa and Kenya in particular are undergoing change and taking actions to reduce disease levels. However, up until today disease level in the different districts in Kenya is not known nor what be the prevalence of disease when prevention actions take place. In this paper we propose a novel Bayesian model for estimating disease levels based on available partial reports and demographic information. The result is a simulation engine that provides estimations of the impact of various potential prevention actions.

This paper describes how two important issues are addressed during the project, namely tool integration and scalability. We show how Orient morphs into the Eclipse platform and achieves UI and data level integration with the Eclipse platform and other modelling tools. We also describe how we implemented a scalable RDF(S) storage, query, manipulation and inference mechanism on top of a relational database. In particular, we report the empirical performance of our RDF(S) closure inference algorithm on a DB2 database.

Due to increasing demand, B. chinensis has been cultivated widely, and thus the study on its rational utilization of medicinal part and guidelines for the optimal cultivation and harvest is an important issue. Considering flavonoids were the main bioactive secondary metabolites of B. chinensis, fluorescence microscopy, laser microdissection (LMD), ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/ time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q/TOF-MS), and UHPLC coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UHPLC-QqQ-MS) were applied to profile and determine flavonoids in various tissues in this study. Consequently, 43 peaks were detected by UHPLC-Q/TOF-MS, and 26 flavonoid compounds combined with seven triterpene compounds were identified or tentatively identified in the tissue extractions. The results indicated that the hydrophobic compounds, especially flavonoid or isoflavonoid aglycones and xanthone mainly accumulated in the cork, whereas the hydrophilic compounds, namely the flavonoid and isoflavonoid glycosides were usually found in the cortex or center (the part inside of endodermis). Samples of rhizomes from different growth ages and origins were simultaneously analyzed. It was shown that the bulb or lateral part of the rhizome generally possessed more total flavonoids than the vertical part or the primordium. The present study established a new practical method to evaluate the quality of the rhizome of B. chinensis and to explore the relationship between distribution patterns of secondary metabolites and growth years of plants, thus important information for cultivation and processing was provided.

We discuss a metamodel for OWL based on the Meta-Object Facility, an associated UML profile, and transformations between both. The work we present supports model-driven development of OWL ontologies and is currently undergoing the standardization process of the Object Management Group. After describing our approach, we present the implementation of our approach and an example, showing how the metamodel and UML profile can be used to improve developing Semantic Web applications.

Genetic relationships between resistances to Fusarium head blight and crown rot in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Fusarium head blight (FHB) and crown rot (CR) are two wheat diseases caused by the same Fusarium ... more Fusarium head blight (FHB) and crown rot (CR) are two wheat diseases caused by the same Fusarium pathogens. Progress towards CR resistance could benefit from FHB-resistant germplasm if the same genes are involved in resistance to these two different diseases. Two independent studies were conducted to investigate the relationship between host resistances to these two diseases. In the first study 32 genotypes were assessed and no significant correlation between their reactions to FHB and CR was detected. The second study was based on a QTL analysis of a doubled haploid population derived from a variety with resistance to both diseases. Results from this study showed that loci conferring resistance to FHB and CR are located on different chromosomes. Together, these results suggest that, despite a common aetiology, different host genes are involved in the resistance against FHB and CR in wheat. Thus, although it is possible that genes affecting both diseases may exist in other germplasm or under different conditions, separate screening seems to be needed in identifying sources of CR resistance.
