Avoidable and unplanned readmissions to hospital wards, especially the Intensive Care Unit, have ... more Avoidable and unplanned readmissions to hospital wards, especially the Intensive Care Unit, have significant implications for the patients' health and poses additional economic burdens on the health system. If patients who are at risk of readmission are identified early and their risks are mitigated, these complications can be avoided. Machine Learning has been a valuable tool for automatic identification and prediction of various health conditions and situations, including unplanned readmissions. This is made possible through processing large collections of clinical data to build predictive models. However, the clinical data from which these models are built is highly confidential, which has restricted the ability of researchers to provide their data to the wider community, hence limiting reproducibility and comparability between results. The MIMIC databases are large, publicly available clinical datasets, which make reproducibility and comparability feasible. To maximise the benefit the research community derives from this invaluable resource, we developed MiPy, an open source standardised framework for preparing, building, and evaluating machine learning models for predicting both hospital and ICU readmission, on the MIMIC-IV database. The primary aim of this work is to enhance reproducibility and comparability of research in the field.

Not only is it important to understand the structure of such relationships in multi-agent systems, it is also important to understand the ways in which cooperative relationships come about. This is particularly true if such an analysis is to be relevant to, and useful for, the construction of real systems for which the invocation and destruction of such relationships is critical. This paper extends previous work concerned with formalising the structure of inter-agent relationships to provide an operational analysis of the invocation and destruction of engagement and cooperation within our formal agent framework.

Social media data are rapidly evolving and accessible, which presents opportunities for research.... more Social media data are rapidly evolving and accessible, which presents opportunities for research. Data science techniques, such as sentiment or emotion analysis which analyse textual emotion, provide an opportunity to gather insight from social media. This paper describes a systematic scoping review of interdisciplinary evidence to explore how sentiment or emotion analysis methods alongside other data science methods have been used to examine nutrition, food and cooking social media content. A PRISMA search strategy was used to search nine electronic databases in November 2020 and January 2022. Of 7325 studies identified, thirty-six studies were selected from seventeen countries, and content was analysed thematically and summarised in an evidence table. Studies were published between 2014 and 2022 and used data from seven different social media platforms (Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Pinterest, Sina Weibo and mixed platforms). Five themes of research were identified: dietary patterns, cooking and recipes, diet and health, public health and nutrition and food in general. Papers developed a sentiment or emotion analysis tool or used available open-source tools. Accuracy to predict sentiment ranged from 33•33% (open-source engine) to 98•53% (engine developed for the study). The average proportion of sentiment was 38•8% positive, 46•6% neutral and 28•0% negative. Additional data science techniques used included topic modelling and network analysis. Future research requires optimising data extraction processes from social media platforms, the use of interdisciplinary teams to develop suitable and accurate methods for the subject and the use of complementary methods to gather deeper insights into these complex data.

Social behaviour arises as a result of individual agents cooperating with each other so as to exp... more Social behaviour arises as a result of individual agents cooperating with each other so as to exploit the resources available in a rich and dynamic multi-agent domain. If agents are to make use of others to help them in their tasks, such social behaviour is critical. Underlying this cooperation is the transfer or adoption of goals from one agent to another, a subtle and complex process that depends on the nature of the agents involved. In this paper we analyse this process by building upon a hierarchy previously constructed to define objects, agents and autonomous agents. We describe the motivated self-generation of goals that defines agent autonomy and the adoption of goals between agents that enables social behaviour. Then we consider three classes of goal adoption by objects, agents and autonomous agents. The first of these is merely a question of instantiation, the second requires an understanding of the relationship of the agent to others that are engaging it, and the third amounts to a question of negotiation or persuasion.

How to Efficiently Predict Dengue Incidence in Kuala Lumpur

Mosquito-borne diseases are rapidly spreading in all regions of the world with an estimation of 2... more Mosquito-borne diseases are rapidly spreading in all regions of the world with an estimation of 2.5 billion people globally are at risk. The recent surge in dengue outbreaks has caused severe affliction to Malaysian society. Hence, the ability to predict a dengue outbreak and mitigate its damage and loss proactively is very critical. In this paper, we study the possibility of applying machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches to predict the number of confirmed dengue fever (DF) cases in Kuala Lumpur. We identified several contribution factors correlate to a dengue outbreak. In addition to the two frequently used factors (daily mean temperature and daily rainfall), we also took into account the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), humidity and wind speed as input factors to our prediction engines. We collected and cleansed data on these factors and the daily DF incidents in Kuala Lumpur from 2002 to 2012. We then used these data to train and evaluate our 3 ML/DL models. Among the three models, GA_RNN was the best performer and achieved a MAE of 10.95 for DF incidence prediction.
