A Decentralized Market Information System (DMIS) that aggregates and provides information about m... more A Decentralized Market Information System (DMIS) that aggregates and provides information about markets is an important component for achieving markets in Grid and Peer-to-Peer systems. The proposed work is the development of a framework for the DMIS, which fulfils the economic provision within the main technical requirements like scalability towards nodes and data attributes and robustness against failures. The proposed work also allows obtaining results concerning the trade-off between economic benefits and technical costs. Introducing dynamic adaptive processes promises improvements in efficiency with regards to distributed queries and routing structures. This research proposal presents and discusses the research questions and challenges, the current knowledge and the research methodology proposed for the development of the DMIS framework.

Self-organization, like proposed by the Autonomic Computing concept, might be the key to controlling these systems. The CATNET project evaluates a decentralized mechanism for resource allocation in ALN, based on the economic paradigm of the Catallaxy. The economic model is based on self-interested maximization of utility and self-interested cooperation between software agents, who buy and sell network services and resources to and from each other.

Collaboration-based distributed systems are becoming more prevalent these days. Two such systems ... more Collaboration-based distributed systems are becoming more prevalent these days. Two such systems are Community Clouds, where a large number of anonymous private users share their computational resources within the community, and smart grids, a distributed modernized electrical grid. Albeit with differences in ultimate goals, these two systems share many specifications and requirements such as decentralization, pay-as-yougo mechanism, reliability, scalability, availability and security. We argue that a model inspired by the two collaborative systems, with relevant common traits, is a good starting point to sketch the big picture of an economics-driven approach to make collaboration between them. We define a comprehensive economic model as key step towards managing and driving negotiation and resource arbitration, within and among both collaborative distributed systems. The main factors affecting such an economic model are QoS, cost effectiveness and energy efficiency, accounting for their interdependencies that strengthen and weaken each other in different cases. Towards such an economic model, we devise a cost model that controls the level of collaboration or resource sharing among vicinities, via community currency, which enables trading through converting local currencies and managing exchange taxes.

Energy consumption is increasing in the IT sector and a remarkable part of this energy is consume... more Energy consumption is increasing in the IT sector and a remarkable part of this energy is consumed in datacenters. Numerous techniques have been proposed to solve the energy efficiency issue in cloud systems. Recently, there are some efforts to decentralize the cloud via distributing datacenters in diverse geographical positions. In this paper, we elaborate on the energy consumption of different cloud architectures, from a megadatacenter to a P2P-cloud that provides extreme decentralization in terms of datacenter size. P2P-cloud is defined as a set of commodity host machines, connected to each other to serve a community. Our evaluation results reveal the fact that the more decentralized the system is, the less energy may be consumed in the system. Studying the energy efficiency of P2P-cloud infrastructure shows that the additional system design complexity involved is warranted with improved energy-efficiency and better locality for some services. Our analysis indicates that such P2Pcloud outperforms the classic datacenter model as long as it meets the locality conditions, which are commonplace in communities. Moreover, we illustrate how much energy can be saved for MapReduce applications with a diverse range of specifications by switching to P2P-cloud.

Exploring the Catallactic Coordination Approach for Peer-to-Peer Systems

In centralized approaches, the user requests can be matched to the fastest, cheapest or most available resource. This approach, however, shows scalability limits. In this paper, we explore the catallactic coordination as a decentralized economic approach for resource allocation in peer-topeer networks. The economic model of the catallaxy is based on the selfinterested maximization of utility and the negotiation of prices between agents. We evaluate the feasibility of our approach by means of simulations and compare the proposed system with a centralized baseline approach. Our results indicate that while in the catallacic approach the number of control messages exchanged between the peers grows due to the negotiation process, its service provision rate is fairly constant in different dynamic environments.

In both cases, there are many collaborative tools based on the web infrastructure such as e-mail, web discussing groups, virtual campuses or audio and video conferences, that basically give a way of exchanging information among the different groups involved in learning tasks, but very few of them have been thought to help or to develop laboratory classes (labs). In this paper we describe a GRID infrastructure (ULabGrid) that supports distant laboratories for undergrad students.

Application layer networks are software architectures that allow the provisioning of services req... more Application layer networks are software architectures that allow the provisioning of services requiring a huge amount of resources by connecting large numbers of individual computers, like in Grid or Peer-to-Peer computing. Controlling the resource allocation in those networks is nearly impossible using a centralized arbitrator. The network simulation project CATNET will evaluate a decentralized mechanism for resource allocation, which is based on the economic paradigm of the Catallaxy, against a centralized mechanism using an arbitrator object. In both versions, software agents buy and sell network services and resources to and from each other. The economic model is based on self-interested maximization of utility and self-interested cooperation between agents. This article describes the setup of money and message ows both for centralized and decentralized coordination in comparison.

El diseño de sistemas que faciliten el trabajo o el aprendizaje cooperativo precisa que tanto los... more El diseño de sistemas que faciliten el trabajo o el aprendizaje cooperativo precisa que tanto los participantes humanos como máquinas se organicen de forma que se aprovechen las características, respeten las limitaciones, adapte y optimice el uso de las capacidades de humanos y máquinas trabajando juntos con estrecha interdependencia. Este artículo presenta las dificultades y requisitos para que un sistema distribuido proporcione soporte al aprendizaje o trabajo colaborativo in grupos potencialmente dispersos. Una revisión de arquitecturas propuestas recientemente como las redes de iguales, grid computacional, grid semántico ayudan a introducir la 'arquitectura dispersa', un modelo suficientemente flexible para integrar los requisitos y características de recientes arquitecturas que incluyen agentes de usuario ligeros y componentes que se ejecutan en recursos proporcionados por los miembros del grupo (sus propios PC) o obtenidos bajo demanda del grid computacional. Este modelo precisa de una capa de middleware que proporcione soporte y simplifiquen el desarrollo de aplicaciones colaborativas. Finalmente se presenta el proyecto de investigación en que este trabajo tiene lugar.
