The collaboration of the two experts in this mission is a fine example of interfusion of technical knowledge, art and observation, which had its political connotations too. The Venetian Republic searched for arguments in favour of keeping the areas under its surveillance in such an unstable constellation, as the Habsburg State claimed its entitlement to these areas too. The paper furthermore offers a brief report by engineer Antonio Moser de Filseck, dated 1773. It has been kept at the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice under the joint call number with Alimari’s text, and witnesses to the fact that the Venetian–Habsburg border area had been unstable throughout the remainder of the 18th century, up to the end of the Venetian Republic.
