Russia, despite its post-Cold War resurgence, faces significant vulnerabilities, including military overextension, economic sanctions, and internal political challenges. The Burkinabe junta, which came to power in 2022 amidst escalating jihadist violence, has increasingly turned to Russia for military assistance, particularly through private military contractors like the Wagner Group. This alliance, driven by a shared anti-Western sentiment, offers short-term solutions to Burkina Faso's security crisis but carries long-term risks. The paper highlights the dangers of over-relying on a fragile Russia, which could exacerbate Burkina Faso's political instability, economic dependency, and regional isolation. It further explores the implications of this strategic partnership on both countries' future trajectories and the broader geopolitical landscape in the Sahel and beyond. The study ultimately calls for Burkina Faso to diversify its security partnerships and pursue a more balanced and sustainable approach to governance and international relations.

This study examines defense security and sustainable development in emerging democracies of Sub-Saharan Africa. Methodologically, Crosssectional descriptive survey design was adopted in the study, while primary and secondary sources of data were relied upon, interview and focus group discussion (FGD) were used as primary instruments of data collections. The social contract theory is adopted as the framework of analysis. Finding of this study revealed that bad governance has perpetuated class antagonism which breeds dissatisfaction amongst people in a bid to seek equality and justice in the distribution of power and economic resources. This process conceives conflict and the result for which many take to demand for rights which are unmet, hence unleashed terror to secure inalienable rights, access to power and economy. An analysis on Sustainable Development in this study, does reveal that denial and lack of access and opportunities are fundamental premises under which devastations of an economy can ensue and hence the entrenchment of the reign of terror. This process, as applicable in Africa, did also permeate the preponderance of reserved armies of unemployed under the guise of mendicant friars that further heightened the predominance of the terrorist regime in Africa amidst destruction of lives and economy. A way out of this is to create mechanism to open up more equitable access to power and economic opportunities which could lead to full capacity utilization of people's potentials and subsequently empower them with incomes and improved living conditions. This requires both commitment and diplomacy of the government and to undertake under the banner of collective responsibility and good governance.

However, politicians in Nigeria defect from one party to the other has not only constituted a democratic nuisance but raises serious concerns among political observers and participants in Nigeria. This study examines party defection in Nigeria's Fourth Republic. These were with the view to investigating the effects of "cross-carpeting" on the country's democratic engagement. The study used secondary data using content analysis. Against this backdrop, the study reveals that party defection was patterned towards ethnic/religious inclination, intra-party feud and selfish interest of the political class. Coupled with these anti-democratic tendencies, the study also found that indiscipline in political parties and the lack of ideology were the major factors that determined cross-carpeting in Nigeria's Fourth Republic. Finally, the study affirms that party discipline and ideology must be strictly adhered to by political parties to check the menace of incessant cross-carpeting among political officeholders.

In Nigeria, the problem seemed to have increased over the past years, thereby creating a complex matrix that produced negative effects. This has brought a lot of untold hardships and other social consequences upon the state. The present conflicts and violence that have destroyed a lot of lives and property in Nigeria is a product of social inequality. This has retarded growth and development of the state. To understand and provide possible solutions to this phenomenon, theoretical and empirical approaches were used to gather data needed for this work. Findings of the study revealed that groups are more loyal and sympathetic to their identity and interest rather than any state goal. This may be as a result of government and groups not playing their roles well. They sometimes use machinery of state to enhance themselves and their group interests. The paper concludes that p...

Substantially relying on secondary sources of data collection to adequately reflect the issues involved in this study, an interdisciplinary approach to historical research was adopted using content analysis. The study discovered empirical evidence supporting the argument that leadership changes are frequent or uncommon. In both situations, these leaders choose to govern in countries with weak or non-existent institutions, allowing them to avoid accountability for their corrupt behavior and abuse of office. According to the study, some challenges that have slowed development are lack of accountability, transparency, and democratic government, which must be addressed realistically for progress. Making the African system run more effectively and efficiently depends on the characteristics and eccentricities of those in authority.

Both primary and secondary data were used. The instruments used for data collection were a validated questionnaire and guided interview. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Against this backdrop the Public Sphere and Political Campaign Theory was adopted as a framework of analysis. The findings of the study show that the social media have a very crucial role to play in the promotion of accountability in any democratic society. It was also discovered that for twenty years now, the democratic journey has remained tortuous because of the reckless pursuits of power by the political class. It was concluded that the Nigerian social media need to overcome some of the above mentioned challenges that limit their performance as a credible institution entrusted with the role of serving as the watchdog of the society without flouting the media ethical standards and squander imperatives for objectivity. The study recommends a need to address good governance that would position fundamental governance and create an enabling environment for self-participation. Electorates should critically analyze the situation and make inquiries before voting for a candidate who will not bring about growth and development in the country.

Women constitute a substantial percentage of the country's population, yet they occupy a secondary place in relation to men politically, economically, socially, and culturally. This study departed markedly from this research bias and delved into the proportion of males to females in public agencies of the federal government in the Fourth Republic. The framework of analysis in this study was the Gender and Development (GAD) model which emerged in the 1990s as a grassroots-based framework. The case study research design was adopted with a qualitative approach which enabled data to be derived from a variety of sources, including documentary records and semi-structured elite interview. The findings reveal that women make up a huge population, but they are not heard politically in terms of elective and appointive positions in Nigeria due to certain structural and cultural impediments, ignorance, and poverty. The results confirmed patriarchal dominance as a reality in federal government agencies with evidence in both number and occupation of managerial leadership positions. The study, therefore, advocated investment in women administrative leadership by reserving some managerial positions exclusively for women, as well as building confidence and courage in the women to eliminate the inherent fear of male dominance. Also, government should review all discriminatory practices, the economic empowerment of women, support from family, fellow women, and media, equal representation in governance, and proper perception of women in politics.

The issues at stake question Nigeria’s ethno-religious crisis and federalism: a study of the Jos North Municipality in Plateau State. The study adopts the survey design and the questionnaire was used as a tool to collect data. The analysis was performed using the simple percentage data analysis method. After careful analysis and interpretation of the data collected, it was found that issues such as the federal character, the quota system, and “indigenousness” that have entered the vocabulary and practice of federalism in Nigeria tend to generate ethnic, religious, and ultimately political tensions and instability. This calls into question the rationality of introducing the federal character principle in the first place. The research also shows that the federal character principle has had a negative impact on political, social and economic development in the Jos North Local Government Area. ...

The study utilized the case study research design with a qualitative approach which enabled data to be derived from various sources, including documentary records and semi-structured elite interviews. The findings showed that the ICJ’s ruling in October 2002 did not address urgent and immediate compliance. All subsequent attempts at arbitration were guided by the law established by the dispute resolution in the form of an award. Every diplomatic tactic employed was modified to follow the court’s ruling, resulting in a peaceful conclusion of the conflict and enhancing the continued importance of law in international interactions between states.

Hayford's political philosophy on Regional West African Nationality within the Prism of ECOWAS. Using data generated from secondary sources and descriptive method of analysis, it was realized that Hayford philosophy supports the "race emancipation" of regional "West African Nationality. It was also discovered that he was among the early modern African political thinkers who campaign for Self-Government for the West African Colonies. His ideas influenced the institutionalization of "Fanti-Confederation". ECOWAS is faced with internal challenges, such as ethnic membership and national identity, power, human right, gender and the integration of Africa in the current world context which is characterized by issues such as global market, cosmopolitanism, global solidarity and intercultural dialogue. It is recommended that African countries must cooperate to improve the standard of living of their people. Also, Africa should cultivate the spirit of self-identification and self-actualization. If not, West Africa would lose its traditional identity.

Corruption and Democratic Governance in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: Myths and Reality

For about twenty years now, the democratic journey has remained tortuous because of the reckless pursuits of power by the political class. The cancer of corruption devastatingly destroys the fabric of national existence in Nigeria. The paper examines the prevalence of corruption and its impacts in the process of democratic governance in Nigeria. It argues that corruption has affected democratic governance with serious consequences for the development of the nation. Such consequences include the diversion of resources; poor budget implementation, looting the public treasury and rigging elections, among others. The capture theory of politics is adopted to explain the nature and character of politicians in Nigeria, especially how they use political power or office to corruptly capture the state for their own pecuniary and particularistic interest, which runs contrary to national interest. The paper thus recommends the need to demonetize politics by making appointments into the parliament a part-time job; strengthening institutions and agencies of anti-corruption and democracy and intensifying awareness campaigns by especially Civil Society Organizations, with emphasis on oversight and monitoring the activities of the executive and legislative institutions in the country.

The work observes, contrary to all pretenses that Africa, in spite of her much publicized theoretical ambition for development, is still caught in the web of under-development. It examines the various obstacles to Africa’s development and identified them as systemic pathological defects. The paper argues Asian Tigers that shared similar experiences with Africa have moved away from under-development and poverty to rival the levels of prosperity in the Global North. Using data generated from secondary sources and comparative method of analysis, the paper articulates that; Africa’s developmental challenges such as bribery and corruption, bad governance, weak political institutions and undemocratic values are serious, real and many but could be meet through improvement on governance. To achieve these objectives, the study used qualitative and content analysis method in analyzing the information generated for the study. Cases and instances from the content analysis showed that: most African countries were in debt almost as soon as they gained political independence. The amount of debt has been constantly rising since then. Findings of the paper observed that, currently African governments spend huge chunks of their annual revenue just to service loans, money that could go quite a distance in developing their economies. From this, it is evident that Africa’s wealth is being repatriated to the richer countries in the west, just like it was in the colonial days, but masked under “debt servicing”, and thus Nkrumah’s notion of economic colonialism. The paper concludes that decade and half after the massive debt forgiveness; African countries face an...
