Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aims to determine the bilingualism that was predominant in Europe 150 year ago; how Europe, at a time when literacy was very low, could have so many people mastering two languages or more; nowadays, what makes most of the European citizens monolingual, while they enjoy wide education opportunities; how respective national languages emerged in Western Europe; the working languages in use at the EU (European Union) now, compared to ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations). In this study, the authors have adopted a historical approach. The data were gathered from various academic references and documentation, while the research itself uses qualitative data analysis. The results of this analysis show that most of the European do not speak anymore a regional language, but are also generally unable to master the national language of neighbouring countries, although they have learned it at school. It appears that many Europeans, especially if they live in large countries, are lazy to learn foreign languages because they consider it as useless in their professional and private everydays life. Besides, in perspective of the ASEAN Economic Community launching, English language as a lingua franca may cover the needs of political and administration staff, but does not guarantee understanding and friendship between the peoples that constitute ASEAN. Therefore, it is recommended that in each ASEAN member country, languages and cultures from fellow ASEAN countries should be taught in selected schools. Abstract

Improving students’ critical thinking is very important in learning process because one of the goals of critical thinking is to develop students ' critical thinking in the perspective of collectable information. The approach used to address the problem of critical thinking is through learning style and metacognitive skill. The Student Creativity Program is a great way to hone critical thinking at the university level. This research is intended to find out the level of metacognitive skills, learning style, and critical thinking and the influence of metacognitive skills and learning styles among a total of 55 students of a Korean Education Study Program at a state university in Indonesia in the context of Student Creativity Program. This research used survey to find about students’ learning styles and their level of metacognitive skill. A test was also conducted to find out the level of students’ critical thinking. The data were calculated by the SPSS to test the hypothesis. The research results for learning styles show that 33 (60%) of the students were in the “medium” category and 22 (40%) were in the “high” category, and there was no student categorised into the “low” category. In terms of metacognitive skills, 53 students (98.2%) were in the “high” category and 2 (1.8%) in the “medium” category, and no one was in the “low” category. All students were identified to have “high” level critical thinking. Based on the significance test, there learning style had no significance influence on critical thinking; however, there metacognition skills had significant influence on critical thinking because.

Abstract

When two languages come into contact, they exert a reciprocal influence, often unbalanced. A phenomenon that often occurs in case of language contact is the absorption or borrowing of lexical elements, which will enrich the vocabulary of the receiving language. In this article, we deal with words adopted from French in Indonesian and vice-versa. This research shows that most of the words of French origin in Indonesian/Malay language were borrowed through Dutch. Historical background explains why there are no direct loanwords from French language in Indonesian. Nowadays, a second batch of words originating from Old French finds their way into Indonesian through English. On the other hand, very few words from Malay-Indonesian origin were borrowed in French, and their route was not straight either: they were conveyed through Portuguese or Dutch. Phonological adaptation and shift of meaning may have happen when the words were loaned from French to Dutch language or later, when adapted from Dutch into Indonesian language. The data analysed in this article may help teachers of French as a Foreign Language in Indonesia, as well as teachers of Indonesian as a Foreign Language in French-speaking countries, to predict which words will be immediately recognized by their students, and when they should pay extra-attention to faux-amis (cognates whose meanings differ).

Abstract

Cette recherche vise à concevoir du modèle d’apprentissage Synectics-Simulation Globale en se basant sur la sagesse locale dans l’ apprentissage du Français du Tourisme pour améliorer la créativité des élèves à faire des scénarios d’un film dont le thème est la vie du tourisme. Afin d’effectuer cette recherche, nous adaptons l’approche Research and Developpement (RD). Les résultats qui ont été obtenus sont les suivants : 1) La conception de modèles Synectics-Simulation Globale sur  l’apprentissage du Français du tourisme ; 2) les matières d’enseignement du Français du tourisme; 3) les Scénarios des films relative au tourisme. Ces résultats pourraient améliorer la créativité des apprenants en faisant la simulation de la vie réelle du monde touristique en se basant sur la sagesse locale. This study aims to design a learning model of Synectics-Simulation Globale in Français du Tourisme courses to improve students' creativity in making scenarios of a film of the life of local-wisdom tourism. The research employed Research and Development (R D) approach. The participants of the study were 40 students of Français du Tourisme course. The results showed that the design of Synectics-Simulation Globale learning model in Français du Tourisme course encouraged students’ creativity. Besides, the designed teaching materials for Français du Tourisme courses and the screenplay about tourism created by learners improved students’ creativity by simulating real life world of tourism based on local wisdom.

Abstract

 RÉSUMÉ. Cette étude traite les variétés de langues féminines dans un film français. Les objets de cette étude sont les énoncés de personnages féminins, à la fois dans le dialogue et le monologue. Cette étude vise à décrire les types de variétés de langue de la femme contenues dans le film, et les variants de la langue des femmes les plus fréquentes. La recherche a été menée en utilisant une approche qualitative où les données sont recueillies en utilisant des techniques d'observation et de prise de notes. Les données obtenues ont été tabulées en cartes de données afin de faciliter le processus d'analyse. Les résultats montrent qu'il y a 10 types de variétés de langue féminine apparues, à savoir lexical hedges or fillers, tag question, rising intonation on declaratives, ‘empty’ adjective, intensifiers, ‘hypercorrect’ grammar, super-polite forms, emphatic stress, gossip, and feedback. La variété la plus fréquente est intonation on declarative variety (50.9%) et celle la moins fréquente est lexical hedge or fillers (0.9%). Ce résultat devrait contribuer positivement au développement de l'étude sociolinguistique, en particulier sur l'étude de la variété des langues chez l'homme et chez la femme.Mots-clés : film français, personnages féminins, sociolinguistique, variétés de langues féminines.  ABSTRACT. This study investigates women’s language varieties in a French movie. The objects of this study are the utterances of woman characters, both in dialogue and monologue. This study aims to describe the types of woman language varieties contained in the movie, and the most frequent variants of the woman language. The study was conducted using qualitative approach where the data gathered using observation and note-taking techniques. The obtained data were tabulated into data cards to facilitate the analysis process. The results show that there are 10 types of woman language varieties appeared, namely lexical hedges or fillers, tag question, rising intonation on declaratives, ‘empty’ adjective, intensifiers, ‘hypercorrect’ grammar, super-polite forms, emphatic stress, gossip, and feedback. The most appeared variety is rising intonation on declarative variety (50.9%) and the least appeared variety is lexical hedge or fillers (0.9%). This finding is expected to contribute positively in the development of sociolinguistics study, especially on the study of man and woman language variety.Keywords: French movie, sociolinguistic, women’s language varieties, woman characters.

Abstract

This research aims to describe student’s writing ability before and after using Jigsaw model, the effectiveness of Jigsaw model in improving writing skills, and the opinion of students. This study applies descriptive quantitative method in form of pre-experimental design. Instruments that are used in the form of tests and questionnaires. The sample of this research is 32 characteristics writing skill of 6th  semester French Education students. Based on the research result, the researcher can conclude that the students have been able to write the argumentative text nicely. The test result showed that the average test score after using the Jigsaw model is 8.9. It means, the average posttest score is higher than the average pretest score, up to 1.7%. Meanwhile, the results of the questionnaire show that students like writing but they find so much difficulty in making a writing or a text, and most students give a positive impression for the Jigsaw model.

Abstract

To fill in the gap on how tertiary educational environment’s non-native English lecturers in Indonesia use all motivational activities, this qualitative case study examined how they think about motivational strategies in the classroom, how they put the knowledge into effect, and how EFL students think about their lecturers' motivational strategies. This study focused on a single embedded design in which participants from a single organization were divided into two major clusters. Interviews with five non-native English lecturers and thirteen English Literature students, observation, and field notes were utilised. The participants believed that there are two types of motivation: natural and nurtured, with nurturing motivation receiving more attention. The instructor element is central to motivation, according to participants in both clusters. Both participants stressed the importance of getting a figure to obey. This understanding was positively reflected in practices where lecturers developed, produced, and sustained motivational teaching strategies in the classroom, demonstrating dominance. Sharing non-native English lecturers' success stories, contextualizing, and encouraging were among the study's specific activities. Motivation is essential for learning, but the type and techniques used can differ depending on the situation. These results indicate that a proper and replicable Motivational Teaching Practices (MTP) paradigm necessitated national or regional adaptations due to contextual factors. However, MTP components relevant to English Literature students were ignored by lecturers. Realising MTP’s importance may lead to successfully achieving learning outcomes in higher educational settings.

Abstract

Keterampilan menulis bukanlah merupakan keterampilan yang diperoleh pembelajar secara alamiah melainkan perlu dipelajari dan dibudayakan pelatihannya baik secara formal maupun di lingkungan belajar lainnya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk : (1) mengkaji penerapan teknik Peer review berbantuan artikel media daring untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran Production Ecrite 2; dan (2) memperoleh data keterampilan menulis mahasiswa dalam menulis teks berita bahasa Perancis untuk level A2 DELF. Dalam pelaksanaannya, metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu metode praeksperimental dengan desain The one groupe pre-test post-test design melalui tiga tahap, yaitu: 1) tahap prates; 2) tahap perlakuan; dan  3) tahap pascates. Dari data-data penelitian yang telah dianalisis, diperoleh  temuan  bahwa rata-rata skor tes awal sebesar = 67,46, ini menunjukan kemampuan awal mahasiswa tentang materi yang diujikan masih sangat rendah karena umumnya mahasiswa belum mempelajarinya. Setelah diberikan perlakuan berupa pembelajaran dengan teknik Peer review, diperoleh hasil rata-rata skor tes akhir sebesar 79,55. Terjadinya peningkatan hasil tes ini dikarenakan mahasiswa telah membuat teks berita berdasarkan pengetahuan yang telah dipelajarinya dari perlakuan pembelajaran yang telah diberikan.  Merujuk pada hasil penelitian, diperoleh informasi bahwa teknik pembelajaran yang diteliti telah terbukti efektif dan mampu meningkatkan keterampilan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks berita bahasa Perancis untuk tingkat A2.

Abstract

This research was conducted in the context of developing a learning model with the verbo-tonal method of phonetic correction in pronunciation learning for French language learning students at levels A1 and A2 CECRL (Cadre européen commun de référence pour les langues / The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). This study aims to describe: (1) the steps of the learning model with the verbo-tonal method in learning French pronunciation for levels A1 and A2 CECRL (2) the flow of pronunciation learning for French learners for levels A1 and A2 CECRL by applying the verb method -tonal (3) the advantages and disadvantages of pronunciation learning models with the verbo tonal method. Researchers used a quantitative approach methodology with the Research Development (RD) method in developing a verbo-tonal method of phonetic correction. The population in this study were all the characteristics of the French Language Study Program students at FPBS UPI. While the sample in this study were all the characteristics that exist in French language learning students at the A1 and A2 CECRL levels in the French Language Education Study Program, FPBS UPI who were selected by purposive sampling technique.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the process of recruitment, selection, and implementation of the Indonesian language assistant program of the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) in Australian schools. The main purpose of this research is to find out the processing stages and to see strengths and weaknesses in each stage of the recruitment and selection process held at UPI. The data were collected through survey questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and documents of the Indonesian language assistants on the implementation of the program. The questionnaires and interviews were directed to the members of recruitment and selection team, alumni, and candidates of the Indonesian language assistants. A descriptive qualitative method was applied to explore and analyze the activities of the language assistants’ candidates and alumni in each of the overall stage processes. The results show that there are some stages of recruitment and selection process, which are then described in a figural process. The recruitment covered the submission of a curriculum vitae completed by relevant administrative documents to qualify for registering the program. The selection process required skills and competences of the candidates in Indonesian language, English, Indonesian and Australian cultural knowledge and skills and self-management. Accordingly, a system development for recruitment and selection process to result in more competent candidates for the Indonesian language assistants is urgently needed to elaborate the whole process in efficient manner.
